Cool Videos: Gravity gets pulled down to Earth in this Honest Trailer

Feb. 18, 2014by: Alex Maidy

If you have seen GRAVITY, then you know it is one hell of a ride. Alfonso Cuaron has made an amazing film, from a technical standpoint. But, there are still some elements of the movie (the dialogue) that leave something to be desired. Nevertheless, GRAVITY is an achievement in cinema and that cannot be argued. But that doesn't exempt it from getting the Honest Trailers treatment.

You can tell when the Screen Junkies team is stretching to rip a movie, but with GRAVITY their claims are all pretty accurate. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are decent in the film, but what you are going to see is the scope and scale of the film. That is what made it perfect for IMAX and 3D. Those are also elements that just don't translate to the small screen. Does that make GRAVITY any less enjoyable at home versus in the theater? Maybe a little, but I defy you to find a more thrilling movie released in the last year.

Saw the behind the scenes stuff and it's mind-boggling. I didn't know that for most of the film, the only things that weren't computer-generated were Bullock and Clooney's faces. We put down CGI very often around here but the technology certainly can be put to good use, as innovators like Cuaron have proven.

The pinball effect and "Shia Labeoufing" made me die laughing. Great stuff.

Fantastic movie though. It was an absolute delight watching it up on the big screen, it was quite the experience. Watching it at home, even on a high definition TV, just won't have the same effect. I'm definitely glad I saw it in theaters.

The dialogue?

what exactly was wrong with the dialogue in your opinion Alex? this was a survival movie and the dialogue seemed reasonable to me and realistic and touched upon the themes of finding the power within oneself to strive forward no matter what life throws your way. Dont know what else you were expecting. While you are entitled to your opinion, that was quite the random thing to say.

Defensive, much? Alex listed a bunch of positive stuff about the movie, but you're getting bent out of shape because of literally one word, in parenthesis no less, of criticism? Watch the video, they list that same criticism of the dialogue as well.

Gravity was a good film, but the story was weak. The film had brilliant visuals and a great performance from Bullock, but definitely the most overrated film of the year in my opinion.

It was one of the best theater experiences I've ever had. Seeing it in IMAX was incredible.

how can a film be overrated and also one of the best experiences you've ever had?

I think the narrative purity of Gravity is one of its strengths. This is the age of the over-complicated blockbuster, where a hundred things have to be happening at once. The simple goal at the heart of Gravity, that of survival, played out against a lavish, magnificent backdrop was a positive in my opinion.

To TAE K, Gravity is a GOOD film, but I don't think it's as great as everyone thinks it is. But it definitely was a film that deserved to be seen on the big screen and the experience of seeing it on IMAX because of the visuals was flat out amazing.

And to Jedd...you have a good point. I was just expecting more when it came to story. Sort of like how Avatar was great visually, but the story was just average.

but Soloist, if a movie can give a unique experience and deliver something that's unlike (most) anything else out there, then isn't it fair to say that it's better than (most) other "overrated movies"? i say that alone warrants the hype.

i mean, sometimes i argue with people over how good a movie is. there are some movies that i love and people are like "it's overrated. it completely sucked". and that may be true. but nobody says that about Gravity. people say "man that movie sucked. there

Soloist, don't confuse weak with simple. Yes, Gravity has a very simple plot, but in no ways is it weak. In fact, it touches on a lot of themes like life, death, letting go, rebirth.
