Earlier today Entertainment Weekly released some new pictures form STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (check 'em out here) and I, along with a lot of other fans, got that adrenaline rush that few film sagas can deliver. I think it's safe to say that most people are trying to keep their expectations in check for J.J. Abrams' entry into the Star Wars universe, but things are looking great so far! In light of that, we have a video of the audience's reaction to the finale of STAR WARS back in 1977! YouTube user William Forsche is the man responsible for the audie, while Homer Thompson was kind enough to synch it up to some video. Now you can re-live the experience of how everyone felt watching this classic film for the first time in a theater!

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS opens in cinemas on December 18, 2015.

Big difference between audiences back then and today...

...people used to applaud at the end of movies. I don't really know when that stopped, but that rarely happens in the theater anymore.

I've heard it at festival and preview screenings, and once at a press screening (TOY STORY 3). But yes, it's incredibly rare.

The last times I can remember were being at a sneak for T2 (we had to sit through Naked Gun 3 to get there) and the crowd applauded throughout the whole thing, but we all gave a standing O at the end, we just hadn't seen anything like that before. The other time was the midnight first screening of ID4

More often than not, when I go to an opening weekend showing here in the Bay Area (Marin), it gets an applause if, it's a decent movie at least. Genre movies get the most applause ie Marvel/Horror. It's rarer to not hear applause in this area.
