Cool Videos: How The Hobbit should have ended

Jan. 17, 2013by: Alex Maidy

I am a fan of THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY. While not as good as THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, it was still a hell of a lot of fun. Many have complained that it was unnecessarily drawn out just to make it into a trilogy, which I do agree with somewhat.

The one argument I have always had with the series is that if Gandalf has access to these big ass birds, why can't they just give everyone a ride right to the Lonely Mountain? I mean, they rescue them and then leave them about halfway to the final destination. Couldn't they have landed, grabbed some grub, then picked up the group again for the rest of the trip? Seems unnecessarily complicated. It is an argument for better men than me, namely Internet spoof makers.

The video series How It Should Have Ended has been poking fun at Hollywood movies for years and this latest installment focuses on THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY. Make sure you stick through the end and listen to the revised version of the Dwarf song. Don't feed the trolls.

I felt the same about the lord of the rings. Instead of poor frodo and sam suffering all the way to mt. Doom, why dont the eagles just fly them there? Would have avoided the war altogether, and saved countless lives. Whatever though. All the movies kicked ass...

Gandalf healed the Lord of the Eagles...

Ya know, for all the extra crap that Peter Jackson throws into the Middle Earth movies, you'd think he could've spent some time filming the ONE scene in the book that explicitly EXPLAINS why the Lord of the Eagles did a favor for Gandalf -- that Gandalf had once healed him of an arrow wound!

What is even going ON in this comments thread??

Out of only 5 comments, there's three comments bravely defending the Eagle thing against....nobody, and the first comment is praising the end of the video (which isn't contentious in the least) yet has over 50 downvotes somehow. What is going on here?? Did I miss a huge flame war that got deleted or something?

I know the eagle thing drives some people crazy but I think it makes more sense in the books, that they're not just Middle-Earth taxis. That said, I thought the eagles leaving them stranded so high up a jagged cliff was kind of a dick move on their part.

I really much prefer the parodies done by the HISHE team than stuff like Honest Trailers or Cinema Sins. The stuff is well-animated, well voice-acted, funny, and more affectionate than scathing.

Those Eagles...

In defense of everyone jumping on the Eagle 'plot hole,' the movies don't make them to be anything else besides a last-minute get out of jail free card. They're a valet service. Nothing more. Yes, they're SUPPOSED to be a completely separate society that doesn't take orders from anyone, but Peter Jackson got obsessed with the stupid 'Gandalf summoning Eagles with his moth' trick. Anyhow, funny video. They had ALOT more they could've made fun of the movie about (e.g. The amount of punishment the

Not nearly in the same league as the LOTR, but still disappointing. When are people gonna learn that sticking close to the book makes for a better movie?

But the Eagles do save them at that exact moment in the book.

Yes they do. But at least the book explains why they do. The books explain why they do the things they did in the LOTR too. In the movies, they don't talk (at least so far, hopefully they fix that in the 2nd Hobbit movie) and no explanation is given for anything they do. Which is why it's not entirely dumb to say that it's sort of a plot hole that Gandalf doesn't just use them to get everywhere they go. Obviously there'd be no movie if that happened, so IMO that's why it's not 100% legitimate.

But the fact that Peter Jackson had them rescue the Dwarves, not even have them talk, and then have them just fly away and leave the characters on that peak, it opens itself up to questions like that.

As a geek whose read the books and hates this argument, allow me to explain. The birds aren't controled by Gandalf, they aren't his pets or anything, they are a seperate society that fears and hates man. They only fly over specific parts of Middle Earth where they know they won't be seen and then (presumably) hunted down. The only reason they come to Gandalf, Bilbo and the Dwarves rescue at the end is because they hate Orcs more than man and Gandalf is their friend in need. They're not going to

They're not going to take everyone to the Mountain Erebor because they run the risk of being seen by people and being wiped out.

Dat ending

Now THAT was a cool video. Way better than the other crap pointing out errors and trying to be funny.
Do yourselves a favor and listen all the way to the end. The video is pretty funny but the ending is just excellent.
