Cool Videos: Inception music comparison

Jul. 27, 2010by: George Merchan

If you've watched INCEPTION (and judging from its box office numbers, you have!), then you've heard chanteuse Edith Piafs "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien", the song the team of dream invaders use to communicate from the conscious world into the dream worlds. But what relation does that song have to the film's masterful score by Hans Zimmer? It has been discussed in interviews with the composer, but in the video below, YouTuber "camiam321" ties the music together in simple fashion and shows us. Brilliant stuff.

Thanks to "Eddie" for the heads up!

If you see a cool video online you think would be perfect for this spotlight, drop us a line at yourvideos@joblo.com.

Extra Tidbit: Loving the INCEPTION score, btw. "Old Souls" and "Mombassa" are the stand-out tracks for me.

Very interesting. That's a very intelligent piece of music right there.

I know i'm gonna get ravaged for this, but essentially Zimmer took and old song, slowed it down and covered it with an orchestra to use as a main theme for an original score?
They used to call this kind of thing a rip off, not a mindf*ck.

If it were any other movie it would be lame to see the composer just slow down a song and use it, but in the context of Inception and what the movie is about I think it works really well. Hence the mindfuck aspect of it.

And here I thought that maybe Edith Piafs "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" cue was chosen in some reference to Marion Cotillard (Mal) playing Piaf in La Vie En Rose.

Zimmer is a genius, and the Inception score is one of his finest works. Epic, dramatic, thrilling, brilliant. "Old Souls" and "Mombassa" are great tracks, but my personal favorites are "Dream is Collapsing" and "Time"!

Fuck, I love inception!

Even the score has hidden shit in it! Kudos to whoever came across that little nugget of information.
