Cool Videos: Oh, by the hammer of Thor! A fan made Mjolnir at 80,000 volts

Cool Videos

One thing I absolutely love is a nerd with a creative mind and too much time on his or her hands. I'm not being sarcastic at all: I think it's really fascinating to see what people will create when they feel inspired, have an idea or are just simply bored.

You might be familiar with the Youtube channel Hack a Day. It's the same channel that brought us a slightly working Portal gun and a bug zapping Lightsaber. Now they've created a "fully" functioning Mjolnir, the hammer that is wielded by the mighty Thor. Using Tesla coils, a rechargeable battery, foam, PVC pipe and leather, they've created a hammer that will shoot lightening just like the "real" one. I've also included the "How it was made" video so if you want to go as Thor for Halloween and really impress some people you can make your own. Just make sure you have some knowledge on Tesla coils before you start this as a project. Have you ever been electrocuted? It sucks. A lot.

If you find a cool movie-related video online that you think other readers would appreciate, please email us the link/info at coolvideos@joblo.com.

I'm not the only one? :D

When I saw this on Kotaku, it seemed like the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. I watched the video, and I was seriously... like... "That's IT?"

It is so rinkydink and cheap-looking. And 80,000 volts? WOAH HO! Too bad it only shoots them in a tiny rectangle that looks completely tacked-on.

Terrible prop, seriously. Thank goodness I'm not the only one that sees it as such a terrible attempt.

Meh.

Really unimpressive. And is it just me or is that hammer ridiculously too big?

in the dark

He should have it least showed it in a dark room or something. That would have been a little more impressive.

OOOHHHH

Altho it's a little cool, the build up to this video and demo makes this a huge let down. 80,000 VOLTS AND SHOOTS LIGHTNING!!!!!....then que the cheep fea market stun gun sounds and as much lightning as a bug zapper. He really tracked down this woman to make him a Tesla coil for that crap? I'm sure standing that close to that thing will make him unable to ever have children, but by the looks of him I'm sure that will never be an issue.
