Cool Videos: Original teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Oct. 16, 2013by:

Anyone ready to travel back to 1980? No, I haven't acquired a time machine but watching this teaser trailer for STAR WARS EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK takes me back.

Here's the description from the official Youtube page for STAR WARS:

Watch the original teaser trailer for The Empire Strikes Back, which is notable for featuring solely concept art by Ralph McQuarrie but no film footage. Among the McQuarrie paintings seen are the Rebel hangar on Hoth, Luke on a tauntaun, Darth Vader aboard a Star Destroyer, Cloud City, an Imperial probe droid, and Luke's final duel with Darth Vader.

This is certainly a great tease. All you would have gotten, at least until they released a full trailer is the art from McQuarrie. Can you imagine how much salivating there would have been amongst the fans of the series? (or the overwhelming cries of "Bullshit!") It's interesting now how we see concept art posted on a fan site instead of through a medium like this. Maybe we should tease art for certain films in place of actual footage. Do you think this should have been used as the teaser?

"The Empire has been repulsed"

Original theatrical trailer released in 1979:

Extra Tidbit: I'm fairly certain I broke the VHS copy we had of EMPIRE STRIKES BACK because I watched it so often.

The trailer for Empire Strikes Back is probably why Harrison Ford didn't want to do a voice over on Blade Runner.

They've been doing it for years!

Not really... the official trailer doesn't give away the plot. And keep in mind, this was an era where there was no internet, the trailer was likely the ONLY information about the film you would have for MONTHS at a time. And the only way you could see a trailer was if you had gone to see a movie in which the trailer was featured. You might only see that trailer a few times maximum before seeing the movie. Movie marketing was vastly different then.

Concept art as a teaser is genius (especially back then, when movies still had mystique & mystery to what goes on behind the scenes). Abrams should do this. Never release any concept art online, and make a teaser out of it.

Imagine the crap Michael Bay would get if he released a teaser like this for Transformers or if Peter Jackson did this for Hobbit 2?!

The narrator in that trailer was really bad at pronouncing the names of the characters. Princess LEE-YA, and LAN-DOW CALRISSIAN. Dude, if you WATCH the films you know it is pronounced LAY-YA and LAN-DOH.
Sorry that just kinda gets on my nerves.

Yeah, he would have known how to pronounce Lando in 1979. [/sarcasm]
