Cool Videos: Quentin Tarantino explains his Australian accent in Django Unchained; says he makes movies for the "Planet Earth"

2 years agoby:

Had enough of Quentin Tarantino lately? Well, too bad, I got some more for ya.  During the backstage press Q&A at the Oscars directly after his win for best original screenplay, Tarantino fielded a number of questions from journalists, talking about his impact on international cinema ("I'm an American and I'm a filmmaker, but I make movies for the Planet Earth"), the controversy of the film, and gives a lengthy explanation on a cut scene that describes his Australian character (most of it WITH an Australian accent).  It's a pretty interesting explanation, although doesn't address the quality of the accent itself, which was decidedly less than stellar.

Personally, I enjoy hearing Tarantino go off on his tangents and rants, even when I don't agree.  He's definitely got a way of describing things and relaying his thoughts, for better or for worse.

Enjoy:

Extra Tidbit: Tarantino's appearances in his own films always take me out of the film. He feels distracting in them. Anyone else feel that way?

I was actually more concerned with what the Hell that first interviewer's question was all about. Huh, bones in a person's body? The f' you talkin' about, dude?

I assume because Tarantino's gore is very gooey and explody, with little bone shards? But honestly, obviously I'm stretching to make that out of it to be honest.

He's obnoxious - but yeah, if that's what he needs to be like to make his art, godspeed.

Why is a current Aussie accent in this at all?

In the time that this film is set we were still a prison colony and would sound English and Irish.

Just a thought.

Have you seen or read his work? Of course he is rather odd, hilarious and in some people's cases annoying as fuck. This is what makes him Quentin Tarantino. I love him for it.
Extra: Yes it takes me out of it a little, but its fun. Plus he always does writes himself to do something awesome

First off, I absolutely LOVED Django Unchained.

Having said that, his accent did take me out of the movie a little bit. I'm Australian, and fake Aussie accents in American movies just sound weird, like a severely wrong combination of South African, New Zealand and British. I'm glad that he had John Jarratt in the movie, who was funny as hell (and probably helped coach QT with his accent a bit, ha ha). I also liked the way QT took his character out of the movie... no spoilers in case you haven't seen it. :)

So he makes his movies for Planet Earth, then two minutes later says he makes movies based off of movies that HE likes from 69-71????? Between this, his acceptance speech where he pretty much thanked himself, his sloppy appearance at the awards, and that video from the other day where he was trying too hard to be black, I think i can easily say that this guy is a total jerkoff.

Great artists often lack humility or restraint. Perhaps you'd prefer a world where art was created only by self-limited, humble folks.
