Cool Videos: See the VFX highlight reel that helped secure The Avengers an Oscar nomination

Jan. 11, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The Oscar nominations were announced yesterday and I don't think anyone was holding their breath for the top-grossing film of 2012, THE AVENGERS, to get a nod for best picture. It was my favorite film of the year in terms of shear entertainment, but there was never any feeling that it would be an awards sweeper. And, it doesn't need to be, really. The proof is in the pudding. However, ILM (Industrial Light and Magic), the VFX team behind THE AVENGERS, put together a really sweet sizzle reel that shows just how much visual effects work went into the film.

I was quite surprised at how much was done for New York, as they literally built a massive portion of the city and it's seamless. I never once thought it was an effect while watching it. The rest of the work in THE AVENGERS was top notch and it really felt like they put some time, money, and energy into the whole show. In essence, I think a VFX win for THE AVENGERS is much deserved, due largely to the fact that without them being as outstanding as they are there's no way in hell the movie would've been as successful as it was.

Kudos to ILM:

THE AVENGERS is currently on blu-ray/DVD, with THE AVENGERS 2 slated to hit on May 1, 2015.

Extra Tidbit: Do you think The Avengers should have been a contender for Best Picture?

Mad amounts of respect to everyone at ILM and the other visual effects houses who clearly worked their butts off for this film.

The work they did on Hulk alone deserved a nomination. But I can't see it win against the Hobbit or Life of Pi

I think there's enough room to say the movie was awesome without saying it was Best Picture material. The Dark Knight was a special superhero movie that even Nolan couldn't repeat. The Avengers was really fun. That's enough.

Such an awesome movie. And I thought the special effects looked great considering the budget and how many there were.

No way is this best picture material though. Unless that honor is being handed out by MTV or Nickelodeon for being "fun".

But the SFX were crap. Especially Thor and Hulk fight on the flying alien. Looked so cheap.

Best Picture?

i know it'll definitely be in my top 3 of the year (DKR not even top 20), but should it be considered at the oscars? I think it should be considered, at least. It made the money, people loved it and it was a serious critical hit. It may not have been as serious or as smart as other award contenders, but then again it wasnt trying to be. The Dark Knight Rises tried to be and it failed hard. Most times when the big box office movie goes for being smart it doesnt play out, it the end it is

The Dark Knight Rises tried to be and it failed hard. Most times when the big box office movie goes for being smart it doesnt play out, it the end it is stretched over different levels and none of it works in the long run. What the Avengers did was only 2 things. Be sensible and be exciting. The plot was simple but not boring and the action was smart and well dressed. The Avengers should at least be commended for taking such a big risk and doing it smarter than almost any movie before it. It didnt ask us to turn off our brains like other action movies and it didnt dig itself into a hole with plot devices that didnt make any sense. It and the whole Marvel universe has re-written the formula for the summer movie and sequels. I think it deserves all the recognition it gets. I'm wasnt expecting it to be nominated nor am i disappointed for it not to have been. But if it had, i could have easily seen why and appreciate it's ranking among other films.

A films job is to entertain and stimulate. Many films accomplish both but the academy usually favors the stimulate part. How many people were actually entertained my "Lincoln" (save for a small few key scenes), and "Amour". Amour was stimulating as anything, but it bored the crap out of me. I can praise it for being smart and well crafted but it didnt excite me the least. The Avengers was exciting and stimulating to the mind. To me that is more worthy of the top honor and makes it a "best picture" contender.

not a best picture material, never in a million years.

Undeniably a fun popcorn movie, that is all there is. The only moneymaking movie this year that truly deserves a shot is Skyfall and to some extent TDKR (despite its misgivings) hey if pocahantas with blue cat people can be nominated why can't Batman and Bond get some Oscar love.

Do you think Django Unchained deserves an Oscar nod?
I think The Avengers was a much better film overall than The Dark Knight Rises (which, let's face it, was horrible) and Skyfall (which was not nearly as good as I expected), so why not a best picture nod? What makes Avatar (Dances With Wolves in space) any better?

@fanboy what do you mean "let's face it" It's not an objective opinion that TDKR was horrible. Far from it. As all opinions they are made subjectively so stop forcing your opinions on others.

i agree that The Dark knight Rises was bad but thats not the point here.

Avatar, Extremely Loud and Incredible Close, Blind Side, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Star Wars were all nominated. I know Star Wars holds a special place in all our hearts but i only see the first one as emotionally deep as The Avengers. Calling The Avengers not best picture contenders is a little rough. being considered top 20 or 30 out of 280 films might not make it on the Academy's list, but its nothing to

@fanboy, your opinion does not contain a gram of merit, i love the Avengers but i do not see it as something better than TDKR, both movies maybe cut from the same source (comic book) but we already know that they differ in tone and TDKR is more ambitious with call backs from the early years of film-making (David Lean epics)

Haters love to hate

But The Avengers was the best film of 2012, and deserves the Oscar for VFX. The only people who hate on The Avengers are Nolan fanboys who wanted The Dark Knight Rises to beat it at the box office, and who still can't cope with the fact that Nolan totally dropped the ball on TDKR.

Tidbit: Hell no. Get over it. This movie was just fun. It wasn't meaningful in anyway.
