Cool Videos: Spike Lee will not be impressed with this Quentin Tarantino video

Feb. 28, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

Cool videos

Quentin Tarantino has raised a few eyebrows over the years for some of the things he's said and some of the elements in his movies involving race. People have both criticized and defended his use of the "n-word," and the discussion increased with the release of DJANGO UNCHAINED in December.

This video from Cracked probably isn't going to change the minds of anyone who is critical of Tarantino. The "subtext subtitles" that Cracked provides at the bottom are hilarious, but the video on its own is actually pretty cringe inducing. There's a couple of times I'm just thinking, "Dude...do you seriously not know how you sound right now?" I don't want to turn this into a race debate, but if you were being interviewed by an Irish reporter or appearing on a Spanish news channel, you wouldn't start talking like you're from THE DEPARTED or start a conversation about bull fighting.

This doesn't make me think any less of Quentin Tarantino (to me he just comes of as an overly excited cracker) but he might have to look out for Samuel L. Jackson...the dude does not look happy in this video.

Take a look:

Extra Tidbit: Sometimes I think Quentin Tarantino tries a little too hard to be "cool" in certain interviews and ends up falling flat on his face. Exhibit A: that video.

I don't see anything uncomfortable about it. If that's what you were raised being exposed to then you'll likely speak in a similar fashion, regardless of your skin color. Quentin's just being genuine. As popular as black culture is in this country I don't see white people speaking in ebonics as wanting to be black. It doesn't sound black, it just sounds like the way some Americans choose speak that has roots in black culture.

You're right. I'm sorry. It slipped my mind that his dad was Jimmy Walker.

Okay, paint me as someone that worships him. I'm not. You think it's inappropriate, and I disagree. It's just a reflection of his upbringing.

I can only anticipate that you would excuse anything the man says or does because you are overcome with hero worship. He is trying to sound black to black people on a black televsion network. He lacks the self awareness to understand that this is inappropriate and totally fucking embarassing.

It actually doesn't sound that forced to me. He may sound like an idiot to some, but I don't interpret it as him wanting to be black. It's my understanding he's grew pretty submerged in black culture. No one said to him when he was young, Hey, don't imitate black people because others will see that as you wanting to be black.

I just think Quentin genuinely loves black people, but is too big of a goofy white nerd to understand that he can't actually BE one. The dude is just from another planet, really. Love him though XD I think he may be the only person who can get away with talking like that.

This is the way he is

How is he supposed to sound? Sometimes he's mellow, and sometimes he's excited. All I care about is that he makes good movies.

He is supposed to sound like a normal human talking to other normal humans. Not like somone doing blackface in the 1920s.

I like him and he does seem like a nice guy, but it's lame to change the way you speak around certain people. Forget the race thing, your a poser no matter if it's speaking like a redneck or stoner or black person, it's completely lame on all accounts. Especially someone his age, I would expect it from a teenager.

People think he's changing the way he speaks around black people. What if it's just the opposite. What if he restrains himself around white people to not do what he's more inclined to do which is speak the way we just saw. How do you think he sounds after a smoking a joint, and having a few beers? Probably like that.

Where is this hero stuff coming from? Now I'm embarrassing myself for having a different perspective? also I think you can be a white guy from Hollywood, and grow up heavily exposed to black culture.

Holy shit, buddy. Are you insane? He is a fucking white video clerk from Hollywood, CA. Do you think similar people sound like fucking Dolemite? Stop embarassing yourself in defending your hero's every action. He did it. It's fucking ridiculous. Move on.

Also, I have heard him speak outside of this context and it sounds nothing like that. That is really all the proof you need.

True Tarantino

This just Is just Drexl Spivey coming to the surface after back to back $300 plus million worldwide grossing flicks. Finally, the real QT could show out after much success.

Guy is a talented human being all I see in this video is someone who obviously is socially awkward, I do get a laugh out of DoB and Preston though going at it over this, the only thing I would say to Preston is he has presented himself in many interviews as one way just seems odd to change it when placed in a different environment. Kind of like a 50yr old person when interviewed on MTV using "young lingo" to cater to his audience.

It does come across as odd to hear Tarantino change the way he sounds surrounded by black people, almost like he's trying to fit in, but I'm not surprised because QT likes to be a goofball. It's obvious he's not being serious here. It's also possible he's drunk. He gets drunk for interviews sometimes. QT obviously has a great appreciation for black culture in the country and black cinema, so I don't think he's really trying to be hip or cool or black. I've never really seen him in an interview

I've never really seen him in an interview give a damn about what anyone thinks of him or who he is. And he constantly acts like a goofball in interviews. He's quite possibly more of a fanboy than Kevin Smith is, and it shows. So, I'd chalk this up to QT just being himself and possibly being drunk.

Wait...

Quentin Tarantino was not talking like a stereotypical black man: he was talking like Jamie Foxx. It is normal for people to imitate the speech patterns of people around them: that is how we are able to take up new accents, expressions and vocabulary.

I've lived in WV for all of my 30 years and I don't have a redneck broken accent like a lot of ppl in my area and even get asked by ppl from my own state where I'm from, so you're trying that argument with the wrong guy, pal. And if he did spend YEARS upon YEARS in a certain region or scenario then maybe your point would be valid, but considering he was talking completely different in practically all other interviews involving DU, your point falls dead flat.

Slimbo, I guarantee if you spend a lot of time in the deep south then you will start to talk with a Southern accent: to not do so would make you feel uncomfortable because you won't fit in;it isn't a question of trying hard. You will also pick up a British accent if you go to England and, if you are British, you will pick up an American accent if you go to America. And this is amongst people who all speak the same language: go a country where people don't speak English and you will have to

Great counter-argument ShonK. He already has an established vocabulary and pattern at his age. He's just trying to fit in and ultimately making himself look foolish. It's not like he talks or acts this way in other interviews.

Haha. Dude, do not point out that a guy that makes decent movies could also behave like an awkward, phony asshat. These people do not take it well.

But normal people across the Internet were laughing about this. Just not here. Because QT isn't some mega dork who knows little about life outside of cinema?

HOLY SHIT QUENTIN!

Tarantino is such a (sorry if you are a fan of his!) fu#@ing tool! I know plenty of people who just conform their whole attitude and personality to fit with whomever it is they are hanging out with at the time! Quentin is definetly (it would seem) one of those folks! My God, this just makes me dislike him way more than I already did! I didn;t think that was possible! What a complete jack-ass!!!
