Cool Videos: Watch Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly in Back to the Future outtakes!

5 years agoby:

By now, most movie buffs know that Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly in BACK TO THE FUTURE and had actually completed about a month of filming before being recast with Michael J. Fox. But up until this point we had never seen any footage from Stoltz in the film (there were a few photos but that was about it). But Stoltz generously gave his approval for footage from his work to appear on the upcoming BTTF Blu-ray.

The below clip is a look at never-before-seen footage from BACK TO THE FUTURE showing Stoltz in a number of classic scenes from the film. It's just an excerpt from a documentary on the making of the film and sadly doesn't feature any spoken dialogue. I'd be curious to see exactly how Stoltz's interpretation of Marty was so different than Fox's (Zemeckis has said that as talented an actor as Stoltz is, he just wasn't getting the laughs from his delivery).

Check out the clip below and expect much more when the Blu-ray is released later this month.

Is it confirmed that

we WILL or WON'T see actual scenes with dialog featuring Stoltz. I kind of suspect that we won't...EVER. I doubt Zemeckis wants people comparing performances by the two thus second-guessing him or Michael J. Fox. To me, that makes sense as well, though as a huge BTTF fan I'm just incredibly curious to see Stoltz in the role. I guess this behind the scenes documentary with talking heads talking over Stoltz footage is the closest we'll come, and maybe that's for the best. Or is it?!?

I love

I love Fox in the role by the way, and 5 weeks of footage on a comedy from the mid-80s is a huge chunk of the movie. Stoltz probably shot half of the Marty scenes if not more. We're not talking 2-3 scenes here.

I'd had like to have seen stoltz as marty. He would be a more relevant actor today. Plus I thought marty was supposed to be the straight man of the movie? All they seemed to show in this clip was stoltz looking around but he had to have had some speaking parts and dialouge with lloyd. He got pretty fucked over in my opinion.

Yeah, I'd seen some footage before and you can understand why it wasn't working with Stolz. This was a role that Michael J. Fox was born to play.

Wow. Awesome.

Obviously, most of us have heard about this footage for years and I think, we even got one photo in the last 3 disc set, but knowing we're going to get the footage on the blu-ray freakin' rocks! Thanks to Stoltz for being cool enough to let them include it.

I've heard

Stoltz crafted his "Marty" as more of an outcast listening to Joy Division and New Order and generally acting more serious in most scenes. That sounds like it could have been a cool movie too, just not as laugh-out-loud funny. But you can't blame the guy for coming up with ideas and rounding out a character. It's the director's job to direct him, to tell him what he wants, and it looks like Zemeckis failed to do that until 5 weeks in when it was too late, costing the studio major money. I kind

I kind of don't like how Zemeckis (though nicely) puts it all on Stoltz like "he wasn't the right fit." Well doofus, you cast him, prepped with him for a few weeks, then shot with him for 5 more, and you're JUST NOW realizing it? Just admit that YOU made the mistake.

Stoltz Footage

There is a clip or two floating around on the web. I saw one of the parking lot scene at twin pines mall. Stoltz played then part too dark in my opinion.
If I find it again I will post a link.

I would love to see that five weeks cut together.

And yeah, I have been a huge BTTF fan all my life and I have never seen any actual Eric Stoltz footage, just like one picture of him with the JVC Camcorder and Doc and then another with him and Loraine.

@kohltrain

I just double-checked and unless I'm missing something, it's definitely not on the old trilogy box set. They have multiple photos of Stoltz as Marty but no video.
