Cool Videos: What if Zack Snyder's Man of Steel was in color?

Cool Videos Banner

If you're one of those people who thought MAN OF STEEL was too dark (color wise, not the tone), than this video is for you. VideoLab has posted an interesting video on YouTube featuring shots from the Zack Snyder movie with the natural color and brightness restored, making it look more like the previous Superman films.

Check it out:

VideoLab also explained why some of the shots might look a little off, and how they went about creating the color corrected clips. Which version do you prefer?

The results we achieved are obviously a bit oversaturated and contain contrast artifacts. Since our source footage already contained severe color-grading decisions, it was far from optimal and, at best, this is an approximation. If the raw footage had been colored in a more natural and pleasing manner, it would actually look SIGNIFICANTLY better than what you see here...Synthetic Aperture's Color Finesse and some color exclusion adjustments did most of the heavy lifting in our color correction and re-grade, but each clip required a cocktail of secondary corrections.

Zack Snyder's BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will be in theaters on March 25, 2016.

Wow it actually looked really beautiful. Going back watching movies you can see how some filmmakers did their own thing, and other followed or were told by the producers to follow tried and true trends. A lot of the worst movies from the 70's had that golden yellow tint that was popular for whatever reason. 80's movies were brighter. In the 90's, we switched from 70's beer bottle tint to blue. I admit I thought the blue was cool for a minute myself, A MINUTE!

Then with Nolan, turned the previously yellow hues from the seventies and the blues from the 90's into grey.
If you notice, a true master like Spielberg, who was making films throughout, those periods never bowed down to any of those trends. And notice too how well his films have held up.after all of these years. Better than any filmmaker of any of those eras. Timeless.

Would have preferred more color in the movie but it still would not have saved it from all its other problems. Cool video though.

Man of Steel is my favourite Superman movie. It's perfectly in line with contemporary comics, even if it's a shame they had to kill Zod, at least it was a meaningful sacrifice on Superman's part. Fairly bored of people whining about the film to be honest. Each to their own, but seriously - get over it. (I await your thumb downs)

They made a positive, colorful Superman film... It was called Superman Returns. And you all sat there beating your chests like Neanderthals DEMANDING a movie where he beats the shit out of some bad guys. Well you got it. And you're still all crying.

I´m pretty sure you can make a light hearted, fun movie with blockbuster action scenes.

Man of Shit was missing three simple things.

COLOR WAS ONE OF THEM.

What a fucking boring movie to sit through. It is easily one of the worst comic book movies of all time.

This movie needed COLOR, better CGI and more practical effects.

Visually it was a shitstorm of terrible ideas that don't match up to what Superman is. I am not asking for Iron Man levels of color, but why does everything DC puts out these days HAVE to be black and digitally altered to be 50% less bright.

Man of Steel was a great movie that treated the subject material seriously and thoughtfully. The color palette reflected that. They played up the alien origins and Jesus metaphor aspect of Superman and completely ignored the dorky All-American Boy Scout part of him, for which I'm thankful. We already have Captain America and even the Captain realizes that TRUTH, JUSTICE, and THE AMERICAN WAY is propaganda.

This probably explains why I kept falling asleep trying to watch this movie. It's so dull looking. Reeve's version was so colorful and hopeful. Not brooding and dark.

This just turns the look into a Michael Bay movie.

And I think doing this is an insult to the cinematographers and color graders who worked on this film. There's a science and an art form into getting certain tones and looks for films. If the people that made this video think it's so simple to greyscale footage, they don't know shit.

It WAS a michael bay movie, at least the last half was. This movie is nothing but a shitty dark knight clone trying to take one of the more colorful comic characters and turn him into a brooding loser. The effects were terrible and the plot was worse than Green Lantern's.

Man of Steel was incredible. Loved everything about it and think it's a great representation of the character for today's society and generation.

Because everyone wants Superman to be a brooding loser whose is trying his hardest to out Dark Knight the Dark Knight.

The movie sucked, stop looking at this through fanboy blinders. The effects were shit, the story was boring and the Man of Steel deserves much better. Nobody can seem to do this hero justice.

Hi mr masterdebator88, firstly well done on all 3 comments you made a very valid point but maybe you could have just stuck to one. Secondly no one can do this hero justice - check out if you will both Superman 1 and 2, they were made a few years ago now and seemed in spite of not having the tech and money available now to be quite good. There was a young gentleman named Christopher Reeve who it seemed to many 'embodied' the superhero

Now just for you - the word embodied means he did it very

Hmm

I still love Man of Steel. One of the best comic adaptations I've seen. Incredible effects, action, and I think they struck the right tone in terms of setting it in a realistic world that fits along Nolan's Batman films (though hat's a moot point with Batfleck taking over), plus Henry Cavill was a smart choice.

How is this one of the best? They made up so much stupid shit, they took one of the most colorful characters and turned him into a brooding asshole who is riding the coattails of Dark Knight success.

They should have given him his own movie, instead of throwing him into a Dark Knight ripoff with shitty effects, horrible acting and a plot that was just boring.

The darkness doesn't bother me but whilst I'm still 50/50 on the movie (even having gotten in to a childish spat with someone on Youtube recently :o) this video does remind me how brilliant the Man of Steel music was.

I really do wonder how much of my opinion of that movie was based off of the drab color-scheme. The one truly Superman moment I felt was when he looks up at the sun, and it lights up everything. I still have a lot of issues with the second half, but also found the movie kind of depressing, which I blame more on the lack of color.
