Could Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique get her own spin-off film?

Apr. 10, 2014by: Paul Shirey

Or rather, would Jennifer Lawrence want to get back in that make-up chair for an entire movie about Mystique? With the process to change her into the character of Raven Darkholme/Mystique taking upwards of 7 hours, I imagine that would be a consideration on her part, but such are the perils of superstardom in big-budget movies. Speaking to EW, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST writer/producer Simon Kinberg sang the praises of Lawrence's portrayal of Mystique (played by Rebecca Romijn in the first three films) and feels she has a lot of potential for a solo film:

“I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”

Now, that's just Kinberg expressing his own feelings on the issue, not a green light for the film to happen, but it does bring up the question; would audiences want to see a Mystique solo film? Certainly, there's been a lot of chatter about branching off other X-characters into their own spinoffs, including Deadpool, Gambit, and Magneto, but does Mystique merit her own movie? I'd argue that Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique in a spinoff would work, simply because it's Jennifer Lawrence, but it would be a tough sell if you pulled in someone new. I'm not saying she's the only actress that could play Mystique (and obviously hasn't been), but in terms of spinning off from an established franchise it would be a tough sell with a new (blue) face.

What do you think? Would a Jennifer Lawrence Mystique spinoff work?

You can catch Lawrence's Mystique next month in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, out on May 23, 2014.

I'm sure Fox will somehow manage to make it a Wolverine sequel.

So Mystique was kidnapped and brought to Genosha, where she will have to compete with other captured mutants in a battle royale. Complications arise when she have to forge an uneasy alliance with one of the male participant and a romance is slowly developing between them. The love interest is then revealed to be bipolar, and was in denial of killing one of the other participant who was his ex-wife. The movie climaxed with a dancing contest in which they came out last, then ends with Mystique

Yep. I love it already. Oh, yeah. Did I mention that this will be a Kickstarter project?

Is it just me or is Lawrence's Mystique not intimidating enough?

I love Jennifer Lawrence, she has true talent, and I think the new Mystique is quite sexy as well, but am I alone in thinking the old Mystique was scarier? I felt threatened by her, spooked out, intimidated. Romign really nailed her movements and expressions. But Lawrence's portrayal is too humanized- mystique is too emotional and normal and I don't like it. I the the 1st Class cast is great but the new Mystique just isn't up to par. Long story short: I'd be down for a Mystique spin off if it

SURE!

Makes perfect sense. You have a great actress, an interesting, conflicted character who can morph into ANYONE. I'm not sure what other character could touch a Mystique stand-alone film except for Wolverine or young Magneto. This seems like a no-brainer. Do a Mystique trilogy and bring back Nightcrawler and a couple other mutants we haven't seen or rarely see.

This is a good microcosm of how Fox is handling the X-Men franchise.

This is more about Jennifer Lawrence as a rising star than Mystique

Obviously she would bring her A-game, and she's clearly capable of headlining her own movie. The big question would be whether or not the script is strong enough. If it is, then bring it on.

With Hugh Jackman occasionally musing about retiring from Wolverine, I can understand that they'd want another superstar character, and Lawrence is an obvious choice.

The character is somewhat boring imo. But she certainly is a solid choice to carry a potential spin-off franchise with a female superhero.

It just seems this idea is coming from Jennifer Lawrence's rising stardom rather than a need to tell an interesting Mystique story. Could the character hold her own movie? I don't know.

If we have to do a solo female film, I think I'd rather see a film about Storm or the Goblin Queen.

We were suppose to get a Magneto spinoff, but that eventually melded into First Class. It's tricky when these characters are shown so well in X-Men, really, what else does the audience want to see? If it's taking this long for a Deadpool solo movie, they should really focus on that first before anything else.

You're right, it is tricky.

I think solo films would be used best, if they stuck with origin stories of new characters, and then brought in those characters into subsequent X-Men sequels.

For instance they could do a Gambit movie, tell the story of his origin, then just bring him into the next X-Men movie after that.

Nah

I love Jennifer Lawrence. She is a wonderful actress but a spinoff is not necessary. She most likely wouldn't do it anyway. She has so many projects under her belt that just seems better. We pretty much know a lot about mystic so do something else.

Mystique was always one of my favorite characters in this universe (even when she was just a femme fatale), but with her expanded plotlines in First Class and now DOFP, I don't really see what's left to tell about the character.

I heard rumors before that Laurence was never very fond of the character or the process of becoming her (which is now significantly shorter since she wears a bodysuit) so I don't know how open she'd be to a solo film.

I agree. He is actually a great character in marvel. Not just xmen. They really need him back. Wolverine can't do it all.

100% agree. I wrote a post on it a couple weeks ago. He is the equivalent of CAP in the X-MEN. Marvel is smart enough to give the backseat to Iron Man in the Avengers movies. Fox is not that smart. They shovel Wolverine front and center, even in the Team movies, where he should be regulated to supporting role.

Why?

This is not a character that needs her own movie.

No one cared about Mystique until JenLaw won an Oscar. If what's her name was still playing her, do you think she'd be this front and center in the X-Men film? No. She's a secondary character at best, and is only getting a higher profile because of the actress. I like JenLaw, but this is pure studio bandwagon talk.

Well, she could have a crossover with the Planet of the Apes franchise and make it Gorillas in the Myst.

I doubt that. Remember the rumor about Jynx spin-off of Die Another Day? That didn't happen either.

I think the eventual failure of that project was due to how badly both Elektra and Catwoman did. Maybe the climate is more amenable to a female-led comic book flick now.

In all honesty, I'm sure Lawrence could carry an entire film by herself as Mystique and it would make bank (from her Hunger Games, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Winter's Bone fans), but I'm not really sure the character is popular enough for her own film. I would much rather see a solo film with Deadpool and/or Gambit instead.

Or when it comes to solo female comic book film characters, I would rather see Marvel do a Black Widow film or DC finally do a proper Wonder Woman film.
