Could Marvel and Disney be preparing a theatrical director's cut release of The Avengers?

Jun. 13, 2012by: Paul Shirey

With the outrageous success of Marvel's THE AVENGERS so far, it should come as little surprise that there exists a desire to see it go all the way and take the all-time top spot, which would send Earth's Mightiest Heroes into battle with blue aliens and a big sinking ship.  The superhero flick is sitting pretty in the no. 3 spot both domestically and worldwide, but Disney and Marvel may be amping up their game to change that.

Rumors are swirling that the studios are contemplating a re-release of THE AVENGERS as a director's cut, including an additional 35 minutes of footage from the Joss Whedon extravaganza.  Whedon has already said in the past that his original cut of the film was just over three hours and has discussed many of the various scenes that were taken out, including much more of Captain America's story (and an appearance from Peggy Carter).

None of this is confirmed of course, but the question remains; Would it be enough to topple James Cameron's reigning kings AVATAR and TITANIC?  Currently, The Avengers are about $100 million away from the no. 2 spot and about $200 million away from the no. 1 spot, domestically (with about 1.5 billion to take the worldwide).  Could a re-release generate $200 million bucks and make THE AVENGERS into Earth's Mightiest Box Office?

Personally, I still intend to see THE AVENGERS at least once more before it vacates theaters and there's absolutely no question that I'd pay to see a director's cut in theaters...at least once.  If this happens, I honestly like THE AVENGERS chances. Of course, there is still that little Batman movie coming out next month...

What do you guys think?  Could THE AVENGERS do it?  Would you make it happen?

THE AVENGERS is currently playing in theaters.

Extra Tidbit: If ever there was a movie I WANTED to see take the top spot it would be The Avengers. What movie would you like to see sitting at no. 1?

I think it could beat TITANIC but not AVATAR. And it will be especially difficult when THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is pushing for the top 3 as well. :)

Totally there. I felt there was a missing subplot involving Thor and why he couldn't pick up his Hammer immediately after falling from the Helicarrier.

P.S. Shut up with your 'jeez, spoilers' remarks on this movie. Unless you've been serving in Afghanistan you are officially lame if you haven't seen it by now.

Oh yeah, and I'd love to see how Cap teleported himself to Germany to stop Loki almost immediately after locating him and how Hawkeye & the goons landed on the heli-carrier with NO problems WALKING on the deck while the thing was traveling in the FUCKING air!

I interpreted that scene more as Thor just not being sure if he'd be able to pick it up. He had just been tricked almost killed by Loki, so maybe he was questioning himself again. Plus Mjolnir was sitting in the ground almost exactly like it was when he COULDN'T lift it.

I'm totally on board for this!! After seeing The Avengers 3 times already I would definitely shell out the cash for a 4th round especially if it is a director's cut. If this does happen it will definitely surpass Titanic, but surpassing Avatar could be a long shot. If this doesn't get a theatrical release then I at least hope we see a director's cut on blu-ray.

I'm obviously yearning for a director's cut, especially on the big screen. But it's not beating Avatar or Titanic.

re: director's cut... bring it on!

I'd be just fine with The Avengers being the #1 movie ever. It won't happen, but I'd be fine with it.

I saw Avengers 3 times and I would definitely be interested in a directors cut, especially with almost 40 minutes of additional footage.

Director's Cut or not

I don't care! Give it to me either way as long as you re-release it in IMAX 3D!

I missed it's freakin ONE WEEK run in IMAX in my city (to which Dark Shadows took over... seriously?!) and would love love LOVE to finally see it in IMAX 3D... come on!

Fingers Crossed!!!

Yes for Director's Cut

too many things left unexplained in The Avengers, like, who's that freakin' waitress?

Cameos from other Avengers/Marvel characters would be great too.

That would be AWESOME!!

Not just cause The Avengers was a nergasm captured on film, but because it not just a lame re-release! Its a director's cut! Has there every been a director's cut to make it to the big screen that also wasn't the theatrical cut? I can't think of one...

I've seen it 3 times now, and if they do release the director's cut...I would probably see it 3 more times haha.

Directors cut with 35 extra minutes may interest me, and I'd still be on the fence to see it again. TDKR, if it's as good as it looks, is a different story. I saw BB twice in theaters, TDK four times, if these trends continue, I may not leave the theater for a week.

I saw Avengers 6 times and I'll see it 6 more if they do release a director's cut with 30+ min added. I'm THAT crazy.

How could they not do this? Even if 10% of the audience came back for more, I'd imagine it would pay off big time. I do think its kinda lame to do it just to be number one, but outside of that go for it!

IS THERE EVEN A QUESTION HERE ??

Of course I'll see it again, 5 or 6 times, like the 'regular' cut...
It could take TITANIC, but I'm nor sure about AVATAR... I can see it coming for Christmas (more time to do money) so you can double dip the DVD/BR just in time for the next MARVEL Studios theatrical release...

I don't want to see studios making a habit of this, but yeah, I'll watch it again. Another 10 dollars for 35 more minutes.

I'm not trying to cut into Avatar here

But it still amazes me that it did such profound business, especially when something like The Avengers, with absolutely borderless appeal and critical acclaim, comes up 200 million shy. No one I knew raved about it; nothing about it seemed especially unique or standout. I didn't hate it, I'm just still ... perplexed there.

Anyway, GO AVENGERS!

Domestically, definitely, I think Avengers would nab the top spot with a director's cut release. But worldwide? I dunno, it's still over a billion away from Avatar's total.

It would be awesome to see The Avengers manage it, though. That movie was fantastic.

Wow, remember when Avatar was being re-released and everyone was bashing Cameron and calling him a greedy money grubbing ego maniac for it?

Now suddenly it is ok to re-release a movie? Hypocrisy is an ugly thing, and shows how fickle fanboys truly are.

Bring it on. Although the prospect of seeing an expanded cut on the blu-ray instead of just deleted scenes is pretty enticing as well.

"Whedon has already said in the past that his original cut of the film was just over three hours..."

That explains a lot. I loved The Avengers (though obviously not as much as any other Schmoe) but the whole thing really felt cut up to me.

If The Dark Knight Rises is gonna be 2.45 then The Avengers had to be at least that long.

Count me in & i always felt if any movie needed to be epic in length it was The Avengers. Maybe they should have released the full cut in the first place.

bring the thumbs down

This is a fantastic idea, here's my 2cents, fast track the release and release it the same day as The Dark Knight Rises.
