Could Mel Gibson be a contender to direct The Expendables 3?

Apr. 11, 2013by:

Quite a few names have been tossed around to direct a third installment of THE EXPENDABLES franchise, the fan favorite seeming to be action auteur John Woo (see our Cast This here). However, Sylvester Stallone has taken to Twitter for reactions to a name he's floating around; Mel Gibson. After sending out a Tweet saying "What about Mel Gibson directing Expendables Five???" as a joke, the actor/writer/director quickly followed up with a serious inquiry:

It's a name that hadn't come up previously as a serious contender, but had been whispered. With Mel seemingly being shunned from everyone in Hollywood due to his outrageous behavior we've missed out on seeing the Aussie both in front of and behind the camera more so than we would if the doors were still open. Gibson has more than proven his skill in directing, making some intense and awesoem films in his short directing resume. BRAVEHEART will forever stand as an all-time favorite (Top five at least) and both PASSION OF THE CHRIST and APOCALYPTO were powerful films that stand on their own merits.

In my humble opinion, Mel would bring a refined statue to THE EXPENDABLES franchise, which I feel was botched by Simon West on the last outing (seriously, was it just me or was half the movie out of focus?). Head over to Twitter and let Sly know what you think. He's always been someone who listens to the fans and takes what they have to say to heart, for better or worse. With a number of stars in contention to join THE EXPENDABLES ranks, I think Mel would fit in perfectly, whether he's in front of or behind the camera.

With rumors of everyone from Bill Clinton to Hulk Hogan appearing in the next outing, it seems like there's plenty of room for everyone, including ol' Mel. No start date is set for the film, but Sly seems deadset on continuing the franchise.

More as this develops. Gibson will next be seen in Robert Rodriguez's MACHETE KILLS, while Stallone hits the big screen again with buddy Arnold Schwarzenegger on the newly retitled THE ESCAPE PLAN (formerly THE TOMB), both out on September 13, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: I highly recommend giving Gibson's Get the Gringo a shot. It's the Mel we've known and loved in an action role that fits his age and stature. Streaming on Netflix.

HELL YES!

Mel needed to be 'forgiven by hollywood' long ago, just as Mickey Rourke and Robert Downey Jr. and many others were. How Roman Polanski is still respected so much by hollywood and not Mel I will never understand.

I love Sly so much but I think he knows what it feels like to be lost in hollywood, put in the gutter by hollywood kind of thing and he knows how good it feels to be out of it... I think Sly should give a hand to Mel and bring him up, hopefully if he did in a big movie like this

I think Sly should give a hand to Mel and bring him up, hopefully if he did in a big movie like this some of the jerks in hollywood would follow suit. Gibson was fantastic in Get The Gringo, a great and underrated recent movie -- and he was just as good, well actually better in The Beaver as well, which was terribly ignored at the award circuit. Mel has incredibly skill as a director and I think would be an awesome, awesome addition.

And all this b.s. about 'I'm not gonna see it if Mel is a part of it' --- Sly shouldn't worry about that at all, the vast majority still will see it because the vast majority have forgiven Mel a while ago, and still think of him as a great actor and director despite some personal hiccups, which damn near everyone has at one point or another. I'm already super excited for Ex3 as I absolutely loved #2, but having Mel on board in any capacity would make me absolutely ecstatic for Ex3!!I have my fingers crossed this happens, and on a side note would love to see John Woo direct Expendables 4 after Part 3!

Despite his flaws (and everyone has flaws), Mel is probably one of the best visionaries Hollywood has ever know. The man can act and direct well beyond expectations. Spielberg, Lucas, Ridley Scott, Christopher Nolan... all greats, and I mean GREATS... but they can't do both. I say do it, Mel. Give us some more action.

I love Mel's directing. And I can't think of a bad Mel Gibson performance. Any involvement is ok in my book.

Interesting

This could be interesting. Mel Gibson, despite all of his public and personal antics, made a movie in a completely foreign language have some of the coolest action sequences in "Apocalypto." Plus, the charm of the Expendables movies is that a good portion of the films are ridiculous anyway. Who knows if he'd actually do it.

I'd watch it

Part 1 was a great idea that was a bit too serious in its execution. The Director's Cut is better, characters are fleshed out more, but still it didn't seem entirely sure of what it wanted to be other than testosterone fueled. It's enjoyable, but should have been so much more.

Part 2 improved a lot of the mistakes the first movie made by embracing the baggage that these stars have and acknowledging that the audience wanted to see that baggage on the screen. Add that with an OTT, almost comic

Part 2 improved a lot of the mistakes the first movie made by embracing the baggage that these stars have and acknowledging that the audience wanted to see that baggage on the screen. Add that with an OTT, almost comic book like level of carnage you could just feel the love that these actors had for each other, the genre and the fans just radiating off the screen in this movie. The film was constantly hilarious, everyone's tongue were firmly in their cheeks and the action was still pretty bombastic. Ridiculous no doubt, but the right kind of B-movie ridiculous.

I'm looking forward to a Part 3, and would be more than happy for Mel to be involved in any capacity. Mel has shown in the past that he loves playing a good tongue in cheek part, and can actually do it far better than a lot of other action guys. As far as I'm concerned what Part 2 showed me (along with all the hanging dog tags in the Director's Cut of Part 1) was that this team of Expendables could be a constantly evolving and rotating team of characters, jumping in and dropping out whenever they felt the need to. Sure I'd love for Mel to do another critical darling of a movie, but at this point I can't see the harm in him showing an audience how care-free and charismatic he could once be, which was the reason we all warmed up to him in the first place.

MEL

I love Mel and would love to see him be given a great role (as a GOOD guy, not another villain role like he will have in MACHETE KILLS) to help build him back up a little, but he would never direct EXPENDABLES 3, the same as John Woo wouldn't. I'd much prefer to see Gibson take on his Viking movie anyway. But I'm all for making Gibson an ally to the team!

Woo said he would if he had control. Stallone--a star who is notorious for being a backseat director--would never relinquish control to a director, even to one as respected and gifted as John Woo.

Even now, Mel is still rather choosey of the projects he takes on (I know that's a tough statement to defend with MACHETE KILLS on the horizon), but it's true. He turned down roles in THE DEPARTED and WORLD TRADE CENTER to make APOCALYPTO. He turned down THE WAY BACK and a number of other similar

He turned down roles in THE DEPARTED and WORLD TRADE CENTER to make APOCALYPTO. He turned down THE WAY BACK and a number of other similar action films to make GET THE GRINGO himself. He's even turned down LETHAL WEAPON 5 repeatedly. And now with his Viking movie hanging around, I don't see him taking on a straight-up commercial puppet directing job. He doesn't need it. He can still fund and direct personal projects... those personal projects all just happen to be massive historical epics.

Mel and Stallone are very friendly with each other, however. Stallone spoke openly in defense of Mel over the years. I could see Mel doing a role if it were good enough, but taking the directing reigns? No way.

WHY NOT!

I'd be fine with it, but it does seem like a waste of Mel's talent to go from Oscar winning Braveheart to Expendables. But if it gives Mel the opportunity to something big and then finance future original projects I'd be all for it. I'd love to seem him in front of the Camera more too. Get the Gringo was great!

I love Mel, but...

...this will just further cement his current status as a has-been; a joke. He's doing the scene-chewing villain in the next Machete movie, did a straight-to-video gonzo style thriller (which was quite good, but still) and now could potentially direct the third entry in a joke franchise that outwore its welcome after the first film. (For the record: I 'get' what Sly tried to do with Expendables, but neither of them really delivered for me, outside of specific sequences, like Rourke's speech in

Mel should be focused on redeeming himself with quality work like another Oscar-winning Braveheart-style epic (like the one Leo was attached to before leaving); NOT hack work for a hack franchise.

I agree, although GET THE GRINGO was made for theatrical distribution. It was only put on VOD later on. It's why I know this won't happen. Mel is still choosey of the films he does. He won't do this. He may be in it, but he won't direct.

He's hit a rough patch for sure, but directing part 3 of this cash-grab-franchise is a waste of his time and skill, as a skilled director and entertainer.

I like the idea of him directing an old-school action flick but not E3. 2 flicks in & the intentions have outweighed the finished product.

I'd have flipped out if he'd taken on the FIRST one...

I'm not really into The Expendables. I like the idea of it more than in execution. But actually, considering Mel's rep in Hollywood these days, and the tradition of bringing in C- and D-list talent, someone like him I could see potentially coming aboard. But they'd need to rework the franchise a little, since he's always seemed a little less hammy than the Expendables regulars, more of a brooding, psychologically complex type. And his directing would probably mean more practical squibs, which
