Could Timothy Olyphant be the next Snake Plissken? Breck Eisner talks remake

06.23.2010

Well, you may not be too thrilled with a remake of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, but this thing is definitely moving along.

In fact more details on the film have come in from director Breck Eisner (THE CRAZIES) who was confirmed to helm the project at the end of April.

ComingSoon got this out of Eisner while talking about the DVD release of THE CRAZIES, "I'm a huge fan. As a kid, I absolutely loved that movie. And Snake is such a bad-ass. The interesting thing about 'Escape from New York' is that it was a comment on the urban decay and the suburban flight coming out of the '70s and early '80s. Conceptually, it's an idea that's not true today because of the world we live in. So, how the prison is created is going to be different than in Carpenter's version. The anxiety of the world and anxiety of our existence post-9/11 is there, especially the anxiety in Manhattan post-9/11. Plot-wise, they're different, emotionally they're very similar. That's why it'll be interesting to tackle this movie, to have a slightly different take but with the same results which is Manhattan is turned into a walled prison."

He also added that there was more script work to be done, "I would be surprised if I found a script that I was just ready to make. I'm bringing on another writer this week and we will do a pass on the latest draft by Allan Loeb. We'll be doing a significant pass on that."

Then in a more detailed interview with MovieWeb, Eisner talked about the possibility of Timothy Olyphant taking on the role of Plissken. Here's the conversation:

MovieWeb: I know you are remaking Escape From New York next, as well as Blood of the Innocent. So who is Timothy Olyphant going to play? Jack the Ripper? Dracula? Or Snake Plissken?

Breck Eisner: (Laughs) All three if you ask me. I love working with Timothy Olyphant, and I will be working with him again. He is an amazing actor. A talented guy. And he's incredibly funny. He needs to do a great comedy, because he is a funny guy. But I will work with him again. I can promise you that.

MW: Can you talk at all about this idea? That he might very well be our next Snake Plissken?

Breck Eisner: Creatively, he would be great for it. We have not yet discussed internally within the studio who will play Snake Plissken. There are many factors that go into those discussions. First and foremost, obviously, is the creative one. We can't make the movie unless we get the perfect Snake Plissken, and that's a tall order. There are very few guys that could do it. He would definitely be one of the guys who could. There is no question about that.

MW: Well, I hope you do hire him. He's one of the reasons why I enjoyed The Crazies so much.

Breck Eisner: Well, thank you. He is a great actor and a pleasure to be around.

If Tim bulked up he'd look a lot like a young Kurt Russel. Look at that picture, which is when Timmy O was younger, give him long hair and in Eye Patch and to me, he looks GREAT as Plisken. He's damn good on Justified, and he has proven he can play a bad ass when he wants to. I say give him a shot.

No.

Nobody is even remotely interested in a remake.

Why don't they try to make money off a Metal Gear movie by now?

I could see Olyphant as a vampire, or Jack the Ripper. But Plissken? Don't make me laugh. Bring back Kurt Russel and let him Escape from Earth, or Escape from the Moon.

Hmmmm

1. Not sure if I like a remake of this classic which I absolutely loved as a kid. 2. Big Timmy O fan but not sure this is the role for him. Gerard Butler originally attached was a better choice. Snake is a tough character to cast. Escape from L.A. sucked donkey a$$, truly. Although I can understand people wanting to escape L.A. NYC ROCKS!

Man, Tim can't carry a film to save his life. He's on a crap show, hitman was horrible and he hasn't the faintest idea on how to portray movie iconic like Plissken. Oh, God please, no. Shit why not get seth rogen and Jackie Chan?Make this a buddy comedy, ya know

Escape from New York was my first Ultra-Action flick and I enjoyed it immensely. I hated the L.A. sequel but if they want to try a remake, I say give it a try and see what Timothy Olyphant can do. If it does not meet the standard of the first movie, then put it on the shelf with the L.A. sequel

Hey, Eisner - how about trying to build a career and personal fortune that doesn't rely entirely on nepotism and remaking other people's ideas?

Dammit

While I loved Olyphant in Deadwood, I am so fed up of remakes already. I despise the fact that all of these director's have supposedly great ideas for a reimagining, if your ideas were so great you'd be doing original features, not rehashing some film that will make money via it's title(or as Hollywood now views everything, a brand) alone.

Even if I do end up liking this when I see it, it'll never surpass the original, due to the place it holds in my heart. If you can't surpass an original,

no matter how many people don't want it, i'd say that olyphant would be a pretty good choice. he's a good actor and could definitely play that kind of badass. BUT i would still prefer josh holloway....

Kurt Russel is snake pliskin. No one else ever will be. Just like Sean Connery is james bond. Unless this guy manages to pull a pierce brosnan, but lets face it. Remake? No. Garbage. This is guaranteed to fail. Nothing's worse then a director trying to put a "creative" spin on a classic film.

As Great as the First Film was...

...it's a little slow. I'm okay with a remake with crazy action in it. Just give Kurt an awesome cameo and I'll be happy. And no 3D!

I love Timothy Olyphant and think he's a great actor, but honestly I can't see the sense in remaking the original. Why not just make a third installment and round it all off as a trilogy? If I remember right, Kurt Russell expressed at least some interest in doing a third one.

Olyphant is one of the best actors alive

I'm only making this green because it's inevitable that the film will happen, so they might as well do it right. Olyphant is fucking amazing (from Deadwood to a scene-stealing role in Girl Next Door to the promising new show Justified). I'm not encouraging the remake but I do like the fact that he's on board now as opposed to Gerard Butler, who is by stark contrast one of the most boring and non-charismatic actors out there.

Remaking this film is like saying:

"Escape from New York is such a great classic. Let's make it great and classic again."

That may sound stupid and illogical, but it's actually their reasoning.

Good casting but unecessary movie

Why does a cool movie from the 80s always necessitate a remake? Oh yeah people will pay money to see it even though it will suck. I usually preach to reserve judgment until iv seen more of the finished picture but ppl are dreaming if they think this will get anybody but a two-bit director. When Soderbergh takes this on, I WILL NOT blindly predict that this will suck balls.

I think that the original could stand a remake. While it's definately a classic, it's one of those films that could stand to use a spit shine in terms of new technology. But, I don't think Olyphant is the right man for the job. The guy is great, and I am a huge fan, but I just don't think he's right for the part.

Its the best casting they could probably do, but nothing could really get me interested in the project, especially with Eisner involved.

Unless it's a sequel I have no interest. The conclusion to part 2 would make such a fantastic movie, but without Carpenter and Russell I wouldn't be interested.

I like Olyphant and and I appreciate that they're not going to remake this without thinking it through but I refuse to go see a movie that I don't believe in. I doubt I could believe in this movie.
