Count Keanu Reeves out of the Point Break remake

Dec. 27, 2013by: Niki Stephens

In case you forgot, Kathryn Bigelow's POINT BREAK is still being remade by Ericson Core director of INVINCIBLE.

Yeah, I know. Several of you were not pleased, and mentioned that the FAST & FURIOUS franchise was basically already a saturated remake of POINT BREAK. "Back off Warchild, seriously." One of the films stars from the 1991 action flick would rather not be involved in the upcoming remake of the film.

When Keanu Reeves was asked by BBC 5 Live if he'd like to be involved in the remake his response was, "Absolutely not. It's not my place." Reeves seemed curious about the outcome of redoing a film like this and added, "If they can find a way to do it that works out good, then God bless them. Sounds very exciting - but is it a good thing? I don't know." The actor played the role of Johnny Utah, an FBI agent that goes undercover to infiltrate a group of robbers-surfers.

Reeves said that some films like THE WIZARD OF OZ and APOCALYPSE NOW should have a "no remake clause".

It's been said that POINT BREAK will not be a literal remake. It will have several elements of the original but include other extreme sports though surfing is still important in the story. Kurt Wimmer (SALT) is the scribe on the project.

Of course, BBC 5 wondered about the long gestating third chapter to BILL & TED. Reeves is still giving the same answer: "It's still in the dream. There's a script and we're trying to make it. So we'll see." What do they need to get this made? I'd like to see it in my lifetime.

It's been said a thousand times, but Fast and Furious was all the remaking Point Break needed, brah.

Exactly! The only thing thats a problem with this is that executives see how popular fast has become and want their own 'official remake' that will branch out into a franchise.

Know what, I'm over being upset about this. Point Break is a movie I could watch on a continuous loop because there are so many moments of pure adrenaline and style that exist outside of the story, and yet the relationship between Johnny Utah and Bodhi feels stronger for it. I absolutely love it. And nothing they do in any remake or re-imagining is going to change that. I'm glad Keanu is taking a wait-and-see approach with the movie himself, rather than coming down on one side or the

I'm also of the opinion, if they do this, at least try to make it worthy of the name. You know, respect its elder.

Point Break is a classic film. If they have to remake it, then I really hope that they honor the original by not making it a piece of crap.

And I can't wait for Bill and Ted 3.

I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no way possible that a remake to what is the glorious action flick of Point Break is unremakable to me. One of the beauties that made Point Break was its atmosphere. 90s pop culture, long-nappy hair, blonde surfers, Mark Isham's usage of fucking synthesizers that made anything in the 80s and early 90s fucking awesome. On top of that, we had a one of a kind duo that was made up of Reeves and the flawless Patrick Swayze. I'm sorry, but I truly feel that

I'm sorry, but I truly feel that filmmakers need to initially convince themselves that the remake they're taking on is able to really bring some noise in comparison to the original. Because, I absolutely hate hearing directors saying their remakes are not supposed to be like the original, but a 'reimagining'. That's as overused, lazy, and unpromising as it gets as an answer. Point Break will always be the reason why I constantly pray if Kathryn Bigelow could ever direct an action flick of that caliber ever again. I'd do anything for that to happen again!

Sorry, I meant to say at the beginning of my rant that Point Break is remarkable and flat out unremakable to me. Hard to remember your grammar when you are ranting!

It's the 8th wonder of story structure

They say there are only 7 stories that can possibly be told and within those 7, every movie and book ever conceived has structured themselves, however loosely adherent each example is. Well, I think the Point Break plot is the unsung 8th and anything can be done within its structure, so why not do an "original" story using its plot points, ala the original Fast and Furious film?
