Cowabunga! The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film to release in 2013

03.14.2012

Hello rad dudes! I got some good news for ya! The new live-action TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES film is set to release in 2013.

Now this won't be the turtles you saw back in the 90s. While our turtle brothers did go through some deep issues, this version will be given the "darker, grittier" treatment. Josh Appelbaum and Andrew Nemec (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL) have brushed up the latest draft that originally was written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (IRON MAN). Last we heard, Jonathan Liebesman (WRATH OF THE TITANS) was in talks to direct the film with Michael Bay set to produce.

The interesting part about this entire thing is that they are going with CGI turtles, likely with mo cap. I thought it was hilarious when someone suggested that Andy Serkis play all the turtles. This looks like a job for WETA!

Personally, I had nostalgic attachments to the costumed turtles and the animatronics. But do kids still buy that these days?

I'm down for it. The first movie was the best because of how dirty it felt. I just hope it looks good.

And not all kids are gay these days. My 3yo nephew loves the og TMNT. He even knows all the secondary characters like Charles and Danny & Tatsu. My nephew is Bossanova

And please people, stop it with Planet of The Apes!!! The ape effects really weren't THAT good. They really did look like computer generated apes more often than not.

BOO

CGI = Bad idea.
Don't care what anyone thinks. Thumb me down all you want. But I think cgi is the wrong way to go.
The suits in the first 3 movies were pretty much spot on. The animatronics masks were great and almost flawless.
Why couldn't they go with more or less the same type of suits and masks like the first movies but with touches of cgi, a la Jurassic Park dinos?

Oh, and of course, it HAS to be darker and grittier. Because it feels so much more real that way. I mean, it worked for

P.S. I know, as I have read all of the comics, that some of them have/had a "darker" feel to them but to me the TMNT shouldn't be all doom and gloom.
Just find a good balance of fun, comedic, action and seriousness!

I'd much rather have guys in suits and practical effects, with minimal CGI just for touch-ups and details. Seriously, watch the Hellboy movies and tell me it couldn't be done.

mocap is perfect

after Rise of the Planet of the apes, i'm hip to this news... also that we're possibly one step closer to a remake of ...HOWARD THE DUCK with a CGI mocap suit... because he looked terrible in that flick.

Given current tech in suits, I don't understand why they don't go and do it live action, with CG faces, like Where the Wild things are? The choreagraphy and movement in the movies costumes is pretty tough to beat with non-mocap CGI, which will always be weightless.

A little while back, I heard a rumor this script was in the vein of YOUNG GUNS...if it's like that film in tone...it'd be awesome.

Hell Yes Kids Still Buy That!!

I have a 10 year old daughter and she has been into the old school Ninja Turtles movies since she was 5 or 6. Maybe she's the exception to the rule (cause she's my kid so she's predisposed to awesomeness) But I fully believe guys in suits would kill it at the box office and make fans happy... COME ON!! TMNT 4 LIFE!

Well if they don't do actors in suits, then I hope they go the mocap route. Don't screw around. Get Andy Serkis, or some good actors like him!

CGI Turtles??

Sigh, if they are going the CGI route why not just make the whole thing completely animated? The advancements in animatronics and practical effects would benefit this film so much more than lifeless CGI. The turtles have to have personalities and be true to their individual characters. You cant get that with pretty graphics and mocap, no matter how convincing it is. The first film was fantastic and didnt need CGI to make those characters believable.

it can be done with mocap if it's done right with great actors. Andy Serkis proved that in the new planet of the apes movie.

"Darker and Grittier"

I'm all for this, since the original stories followed this format. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the slapstick TMNT era of the early to mid 90's too, but the original stories were far superior.

It's kind of meta that the Turtle movies are going through a dark and gritty phase when Eastman and Laird created the Turtles to lampoon comics that were dark and gritty.

I would wonder if there would be the same sort of self-awareness in this reboot but with Bay's Platinum Dunes attached to produce I seriously doubt it.

The first film, as others pointed out, wasn't all that bright and shiny, Shredder gets compacted in a garbage truck after all. The sequels were the main culprit in pandering towards the ten and under crowd. Could be a cool update, though not holding any high hopes coming from Platinum Dunes. I'll give'em points if Corey Feldman voices Donatello again!

Dark and Gritty

The TMNT comics were originally dark and gritty. It's about time they start aiming these kind of reboots at the audience that grew up with them.

I recently watched the first one again and it was very dark and gritty. Surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did when I was younger.

Actually, the turtles started out dark and gritty. The comic books were fairly violent and serious. This is a return to their origins, despite the fact that most people only remember the comedic, slapstick cartoon.

CGI MO-CAP

Well WETA needs to do it, only WETA. Please don't fuck this up. Darker turtles sounds cool though I'm down for a nice PG-13 turtle movie.

We'll see. I, for one, hugely enjoyed the recent animated film and was still rather hoping for a sequel that might fix the flaws of the first but add a chapter to a fairly entertaining world. However, if TMNT wants to get back to its true roots (I'm talking the original, Daredevil-esque comic books) then I'm willing to give it a shot.

ABSOLUTE GARBAGE

This is why I watch nothing but Indie and foreign flicks anymore. Hollywood recycles everything now. I don't care if this movie actually turns out good, I am sick of the remakes, reboots, and overall lack of originality in Hollywood.

Dude, Eastman and Laird already recycled their own Turtles property a hundred times. Those guys practically invented reboot, remakes and heavy merchandising. They went from gritty comic to saturday morning cartoon. Best part is they are rehashing the Turtles since 1984, that's almost 30 years now. They never did anything else! When's the last time you saw a Hollywood studio producing nothing but the same property for over 30 years?

It might be funny but if Andy Serkis was in the movie and WETA was doing the CGI, they just sold a ticket.

This could either be brilliant or brutally embarassing. Time will tell.

Christ I love the first movie!
