Crazy Rich Asians sequel already in the works at Warner Bros.

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

If you’ve been on the internet the last week or two you’d know CRAZY RICH ASIANS is the talk of the town. Not only is the movie being championed for its representation of a culture we don’t often (if ever) see on the big screen, but it’s also one of the best-reviewed movies of the summer and came out on top at the box office last weekend (and probably this weekend). Of course, Warner Bros. is wasting no time getting a sequel going, and it’s been confirmed a follow-up is already in development.

THR confirmed that screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim will begin penning the sequel later this year and it will be adapted from the second book in author Kevin Kwan’s trilogy – “China Rich Girlfriend.” Warner Bros. has not officially greenlit the movie yet, but director Jon M. Chu is already in talks to return. Nothing was announced in regards to the cast, but chances are high the main cast including Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle YeohGemma Chan and more will also return.

The movie opened a week ago today and was expected to make about $27 million through its first five days. It exceeded those expectations and made about $34 million, and it's poised to win this weekend as well thanks to some non-threatening competition.

Here is the plot synopsis for the first film:

The story follows New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore.  Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life.  Not only is he the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families, but also one of its most sought-after bachelors.  Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh) taking aim.

CRAZY RICH ASIANS is in theaters now.
