Creepy cool trailer for found footage thriller As Above, So Below

04.24.2014

Fans of QUARANTINE and DEVIL will be familiar with writer/director John Dowdle, who is bringing his latest found footage horror/thriller to the big screen in AS ABOVE, SO BELOW. The new pic features a cast of unknowns who travel into the depths of the catacombs beneath the streets of Paris looking for "a critical missing piece" of history. The expedition goes awry when the team is trapped inside and start to experience strange and frightening phenomena.

Take a look:

Here's the synopsis:

Miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers ventures into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover the secret of what this city of the dead was meant to contain. A journey into madness and terror, As Above, So Below reaches deep into the human psyche to reveal the personal demons that come back to haunt us all.

I'm not really a huge proponent of found footage flicks, but I'm not against them either. This looks like a pretty cool variation on the genre, though, and I like the elements of the "hell on earth" theme going on here. The clausterphobic aspect is nice, too, as it creates an immediate air of tension. Being trapped in a cave (or catacomb) in the dark with no real means of finding your way out is scary enough. Then you bring in hell? Shiiiiit.

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW crawls into theaters on August 15, 2014.

Oh I hope that's sarcasm. Those aren't the real catacombs man. That's a set. God I hope you are joking.

i can get behind this, though its honestly borrowing a lot from the Descent.

I agree with Silverload, feels like its expected we see a few of these each year and if studios make a decent buck off each, they'll continue to make them. I'm not against the found footage flick, I would just love to see it used properly, like in Cloverfield for instance.

I'm done with found footage films. Not that I was really ever a fan. They are just lazy, and for some strange reason the critics and audience lets found footage get away with far more than a regular movie. Good script and acting is not required to make a successful found footage movie.

i was considering watching this until....

...the trailer seems to give out the story of the film and major scares. leaves less mystery. why the BEEP do film companies do this, totally ruins a film experience. 'Woman in black' is prime example.

sort it out bumberclarts!

Seriously?

No one's gonna point out how this is a complete ripoff of "The Descent"? That scene with them crawling through the tight tunnel and then the cave in and then talking about how they can't go back and then the scary shit starts happening... I literally thought I was watching a trailer for remake of that movie. Looks like the exact same premise, they just swapped out cave people for ghosts.

How is it a rip off of the decent? Because they go underground?

No. I'm aware that similar settings don't make two movies identical, I'm not an idiot. But that scene I mentioned is virtually a shot-for-shot reenactment of the exact same scene from "The Descent." Clearly you've never seen "'The Descent" or you would know. Watch the trailer to see for yourself: [link]

This movie could have been a legit horror movie with such a great premise if they took out the overly done found footage style. ITS LAZY FILMMAKING

If you have ever been there...

If you have ever been to the catacombs in Paris I guarantee one of the first things you thought was that it would be the perfect setting for a horror movie. They have an amazing history, claustrophobic setting and is supposedly one of the most haunted places in the entire world. Count me in for this one!
