Cruise a Tourist?

Tom Cruise is adding another project to his maybe I might wanna do but maybe I’ll let Angelina Jolie do instead list. According to Variety, Cruise and Spyglass Entertainment are “circling each other” for the upcoming thriller THE TOURIST. Somehow that makes me think of Cruise and some executive doing a tango together, breathing sweet nothings into each others’ ear. Not sure what “circling” means (is that like a buzzard slowly closing in on a carcass?) but they do clarify to say that THE TOURIST is the “strongest contender” for Cruise’s acting services since he wrapped VALKYRIE. THE TOURIST (a title once owned by DECEPTION, that horrible Hugh Jackman/Ewan McGregor thriller), would star Cruise as an American vacationing in Europe who gets roped into international intrigue by a female Interpol agent.

TOURIST is a remake of the 2005 French film ANTHONY ZIMMER with Julian Fellowes (GOSFORD PARK) writing for director Bharat Nalluri (MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY). Before you get excited about Cruise starring in anything, keep in mind he has about 20 projects in the works at any time and frequently drops in and out of them (just this week alone he was replaced by Angelina Jolie and attached himself to a comedy titled FOOD FIGHT. Personally I would love to see Cruise as the lead in a Judd Apatow comedy but that’s just me. He’s a funny guy! Go see TROPIC THUNDER for more proof…
