So the rumor goes that J.J. Abrams might be the only person on the planet who doesn't think that his name alone will draw asses to seats in a cinema showing one of his films. Apparently he thinks he needs a major name to cameo in STAR TREK and apparently that name is Tom Cruise. I'm not going to talk about whether or not Cruise is insane, the leader of a global cult or anything about him jumping on Oprah's couch like it was his father's talk show. That wouldn't be classy at all. Instead I'll just tell you that according to sources, Cruise will play Captain Christopher Pike, who was James T. Kirk's predecessor as captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise and Mr. Spock's first commanding officer. And also, I don't really think Cruise is crazy, I really like the guy. MAGNOLIA should have earned him an Oscar.

Extra Tidbit: Cruise's last major cameo was in AUSTIN POWERS IN GOLDMEMBER.

Interview With the Vampire

Well, MadMax, I guess we're gonna disagree on this one.

'Cause, IMO? In the novel, Lestat is an unlikable, shallow monster. And in the movie, he was a charismatic, contemplative fop (and, again, about as threatening as Elton John).

Thus, IMO, Cruise undermined the drama by de-fanging (sorry) its antagonist.

And don't even get me started on...

And don't even get me started on Pitt as Louis.

;-)

And were you calling me a "fuckin dumbass" for pointing out that, like it or not, Cruise's off-camera life is distracting Joe Public from his on-screen work? (Although, personally, I couldn't care less what he does off-camera.)

He's not alone
I don't think just his name alone would do it either. He's directed one movie and it was good, but its just one and not evevryone liked Alias.

And, Shadowalker, he was awesome in, Interview. And anyone who thinks his off camera life has effected his work is a fuckin dumbass.

Almost every Star Trek movie I've seen blows. Tom Cruise is awesome. I'm one of those that could care less about an actor behaving eccentric and jumping on a couch. Get over it. If someone like Robbin Williams did it no one would even notice, so what gives? Star Trek needs some life breathed into it and Cruise can do that. All hail L. Ron Hubbard!

Yah!
That would be too cool! I'm one of those people who don't care about his off screen stuff, as long as he's legal, who cares. It's the screen work that I like and Cruise delivers all the time.

Hell yeah, I'm all for it. I'm looking forward to this movie either way, though... I just hope that it's not ALL action and it taps into the intellectual potential of the stories as well.

Wether Tom Cruise is a dummy or mad isnt important when comes time to cast him in a film. He can act. Thats all that matters, if people let the public stuff influence their decision to see a film cause of that then they are just dumb. Just think of all the music you listen, those people have done some crazy stuff that you dont know about, even your parents did. Okay they attack Oprah but still,...

You hate him cause of Scientology ?? Well he has never tried to but any of that stuff in his film and if you do hate him for his religion then its called intolerance, same thing as racism.

Cruise in Star Trek?
I have never really been a big fan of Cruise...He just always seemed so smug in all of his roles. Maybe that is the way those characters were written, but even then it's like the casting people are saying "this is a really egotistical character...Get me the agent for Tom Cruise."

As for the cameo...Don't do it just to do it. I would rather a great character actor walk on the screen as Pike than to be sitting in the theater and hear people say "look it;s Tom Cruise"

p.s. The Last Samurai was awesome. See I'm no hater.

star cruise?

Professionally, I'd say that Cruise currently has way too much baggage to be anything other than a major distraction on a project like this.

Personally, I'll never really forgive him for turning the main villain in Interview With the Vampire into a campy fop who was about as threatening as Elton John.

Cruise is far from my favorite actor. The last good thing he did IMO was Collateral. But Captain Pike is a good fit for him,(or Kirk's dad) and would be a nice tribute to the guy who coulda been on a 5 year mission. Maybe some of those H-wood boneheads do have a brain after all.

I agree
It's sad to see that every time Tom Cruise's is mentioned the words "Oprah" and "Couch" seem to follow. He pretends to be other people for a living. He was incredible in most of his movies and what he does in his free time is no one's business.

I don't understand
I dont get why people hate Cruise so much. I dont like his off screen stuff but who cares about that!!! He is the best actor of our generation, just about all of his movies are good if not great. Name me movies that he personally ruined. Not all of his movies people like but he wasnt the problem in any of them. Granted, Cruise is my favorite actor so I am a bit biased but honestly his movies...

No way!
The new Star Trek movie will already have a hard time winning people over without Tom Cruise mucking things up. And I certainly don't want him trying to use his influence to slip in Scientology influences. If that happens, I shall pray for Gene Roddenberry's ghost to haunt him for enternity.

People are just wierd...
...for hating on someone just because they jumped on a couch. wtf?

Give the guy a break just because of a religion etc, he's f'kin awesome for crying out loud. The guy practically IS Hollywood.

I enjoy everything the man has been in and hope to enjoy many more things he is in for a long time. Even Abrams knows it.

someone needs to take Cruise out, he's destroying what could have been good films. He was good in his earlier career, should have left it at that.
