CW's Wonder Woman series Amazon officially gets the axe

Jan. 15, 2014by: Niki Stephens

If it wasn't for Wonder Woman showing up in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, this news would actually be kind of sad. The idea of getting another Wonder Woman series has been shot down as much as the idea of the character getting a solo film.

She still may not be getting either or those but Diana of Themyscira has a supporting role in a major superhero film. That's better than nothing, right?

The series thought to be on pause would be a prequel, telling the story of Diana rather than beginning with Wonder Woman. Aron Eli Coleite (HEROES) was the last person to touch the script with hopes that the revamp would make for a pleasing pilot. I guess it didn't.

CW president Mark Pedowitz announced this at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour:

We did not go forward with it.

Pedowitz isn't opposed to starting again with the character if the right idea comes along but right now it isn't a reality. Regardless of my take on ARROW, the series is doing well and hopefully FLASH will too. Pedowitz is all about taking small steps on characters and projects like these:

It all depends on the script. We were very careful with Arrow and we're being very careful with Flash. These are iconic characters so we're going to be very careful with Wonder Woman. You only get one shot before you get bit.

Do you think someone will get the formula right for a decent Wonder Woman series?

Jennifer Lawrence

Does the image on the cover photo link to this article look like Jennifer Lawrence from American Hustle to anyone else? As a brunette of course.

Since DC tv likes to do pre-quel series of before they were super heroes....

How about they go further on the sperm of Aquaman. And the whole series is about the daily challenges of the sperm trying to reach the egg. And once it reaches through birth, we end the series. At least with Arrow and Flash, we are going forward with them having costume and powers, etc. Watching the heroes at puberty struggling through teen years is like watching a winey Darth Vader. Glad this we cancelled. Keep her on Celluloid

I couldn't talk enough shit on what a ridiculous character WW is. Go ahead and defend her. I've heard it all before.

its not rocket science

Given the characters original origin and her generic and very corny abilities (super strength, invisible plane, lasso of truth...ugh) they see a very small if non existent fan base for this show and making it without it being corny, looking corny and sounding corny (really bad dialogue in the comics) is almost impossible, especially since no one really cares about her. hence why she is being forced into the S vs B movie where they can try to get somebody interested and if not she can be eye

I guess Marvel's batch of proposed Netflix shows might change things, but as it stands the Marvel universe is stronger in the cinema, and the DC universe is stronger on TV - that's not necessarily a bad thing for DC, I mean TV is where some of the greatest storytelling is done at the moment - they could tell great stories with Wonder Woman if they really wanted to. I think Arrow ended up being a better series than anyone expected and Agents of Shield seems to have disappointed most people. I

I think if DC did a good job of linking their TV and cinematic properties they'd have one up on Marvel at least in that respect - that'll all change if any of Marvel's Netflix series get it right - DareDevil maybe? - but I get what DC mean by not wanting to balls up Wonder Woman on TV because it's true - they'll get one chance at getting it right or the concept will lie dormant for another 10 years till they think people have forgotten it enough to try a reboot.

May be with Flash coming to the small screen...Bruce Wayne the kid coming to the small screen...Flash and Ra's al Ghul existing in the same world of Arrow...someone high up at WB's suddenly went whoa whoa whoa! Slow down. We want to establish a movie cinematic universe where may be...just may be the TV avenue will play a supporting role to this. Well why do we want to confuse the general public who aren't comic book readers by introducing multiple storylines involving the same character on

Someone at WB's having some sense ....nahhhh... must be another reason they ditched Amazon.

Maybe it's just hard to get the material for her right? I honestly think that Wonder Woman may have the best chance of all the heroes of having a good TV run because it would be so refreshing and new. We already get a bunch of male heroes on TV. It's been far too long since we had a good female hero with her own show. I honestly don't think a stint as a side character in the Batman/Superman movie is good enough.

Man, Wonder Woman doesn't seem to have her big break, does she?

That's too bad. After the success of Smallville and Arrow, I was really curious to see if CW could make a successful series out of this.

Seems that Warner/DC has at least some semblance of what it means to have continuity between their properties on TV and at the movies. I wonder if that planned Gotham TV series will link up to Affleck's incarnation of the character. Still hope the rumour about Wonder Woman's origins being Kryptonian in nature turns out to be false.

What's the problem with Arrow, besides being the best show based on a comic book ever?

It really is the best show based on a comic book ever. Great show.

I completely agree. Arrow has grown into a really wonderful show, and hopefully that same level of care will be taken with WW in the future.

CW is only good for stuff you know will never make it to the big screen anyway. You can make a soap out of Green Arrow because the odds of being able to do anything else with the character are slim anyway. Wonder Woman on the other hand, has a genuine shot at the big screen and CW would just ruin it.

I think with the right writer, director and actor, Green Arrow would make a great movie for the big screen.

Stephen Amell should be considered for Green Arrow in the Justice League film. He makes for the perfect Green Arrow.

@The_Soloist, I would love that but only if Grant Gustin ends up being The Flash in Justice League OR they have someone other than Barry in the film, because they already established that his Barry Allen and Stephen Amell's Oliver Queen exist in the same universe.

oh it has a shot bc they will force it but it will for teh most part bomb and be terrible. I cant see anyway in which they can really make her character interesting and repeated failure of cancelled movies and TV shows proves that out.

Ghostman123, I liked who they casted as Flash for Arrow, but I would want someone else for the big screen version as well too. The guy is fine for the small screen, but I think they could cast better for Flash in the upcoming Justice League film.

But those two now go hand in hand. You can't recast the Flash now and say Stephen Amell is still Oliver Queen. Unless, again, it's not Barry Allen as the Flash but someone else.
