Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow to direct Star Wars: Episode IX

08.15.2015

Director J.J. Abrams stated earlier this week that there would be no new footage, behind-the-scenes or otherwise, of THE FORCE AWAKENS to present at this year's D23. That didn't mean there would be nothing to report though, as it was just officially announced that JURASSIC WORLD's Colin Trevorrow would be taking the directorial reigns for EPISODE IX!

While production won’t begin for a few years, Trevorrow is heading to Lucasfilm this year to begin working with artists and his fellow Star Wars directors, J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson.

Kathleen Kennedy on Colin Trevorrow:

Colin is someone I’ve been interested in working with ever since I saw SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED. The power of that film paired with the enormous success of JURASSIC WORLD speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled filmmaker. We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe.

Colin Trevorrow on directing Episode IX

This is not a job or an assignment. It is a seat at a campfire, surrounded by an extraordinary group of storytellers, filmmakers, artists and craftspeople. We’ve been charged with telling new stories for a younger generation because they deserve what we all had—a mythology to call their own. We will do this by channeling something George Lucas instilled in all of us: boundless creativity, pure invention and hope.

The next chapter in this new trilogy, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, will open in theaters on December 18, 2015.

How do you feel about Trevorrow directing the final installment?

Horrible News.

So EVERYTHING JJ worked to accomplish will be replaced with shitty CGI in the next movie. I can't stand Trevorrow. Jurassic World was just so bland and boring. The CGI was so overused and looked like shit. He is a hack director who gets in over his head so he has to accommodate by using poor effects.

I hope he drops out and someone with skills using REAL effects and practical cinematography skills gets hired in his place.

Highly disappointing

At least Episode 7 will probably be good. 8 & 9 don't look very promising. Abrams is the only filmmaker with the qualities necessary for a Star Wars film. He's a visual filmmaker with operatic sensibilities. Key word there is "operatic". Is it possible that Kathleen Kennedy sees something in Johnson & Trevorrow that I don't? Sure. I have faith in her as a producer, and both of those filmmakers have a tiny track record. So maybe in meeting with them she was sold on their vision. No idea.

The only thing I know is that Jurassic World was utter garbage. Terrible characterization, horrible staging & set pieces, godawful CG. A generic movie from a filmmaker with no vision. But maybe that's not true, maybe Universal didn't allow Trevorrow to be Trevorrow. Maybe he's actually great. But I doubt it. At least Rian Johnson has a unique vision & perspective when he makes a movie. I don't think he's a good fit for Star Wars, but that's my problem.

Could be that Kennedy's hoping if Abrams sets the tone, Johnson & Trevorrow will follow suit. If John Williams does all 3 as composer, if they stick to a real sets / practical effects / 35mm film model, and if Kennedy allows each filmmaker to flourish creatively, we might be ok. But the filmmakers chosen to helm Episodes 8 & 9 are just very disappointing.

Ugh no....

Very lazy and uninspired choice. He has no distinct style, horrible at directing action, and doesn't know how to create tension, or suspense.

Noooo

This guy couldn't creat even 1 second of tension in Jurassic World. the only idea he had was to use the old score over and over again. No style, generic director. He doesn't worth quality productions like Star Wars.

Getting the gig on the merits of Jurassic World making shit loads of cash is not ideal.

I mean, I could have directed Jurassic World and it would have made a shit load of cash. The name of movie sells it... As will the name of Star Wars.
Not hating on him though. JW was fun if not amazing but the direction was pretty good. I wont write it off without even seeing a trailer.

But you didn't. Also, the franchise name only matters when the movie is not a total crap production. Just look at Fantastic Four.

My Fan pick for no. 9 would of been Duncan Jones, he's proven to be No One hit wonder, and with no issues so far with Warcraft, he seems to be ok with Big Budget movies. Though if he wanted to direct Star Wars is another question

He probably won't do it. He seem committed to a Warcraft sequel should the first one is a hit, but not before he does another original sci-fi movie.

ok thats great, Colin is doing episode 9...

Colin Trevarrow is directing Episode 9.... um, who'd they announce was directing episode 8 and what specifics were in that one?
seems with The Force Awakens, Rouge One, the Han Solo movies... **I** lost track of who's directing episode 8 (which is still a long way off... so any news on part 9 is kinda even farther off and doesnt even make a dent in my radar..

I would also like to add that there is no such thing as a safe choice for picking a director of a Star Wars film. EVERYTHING they do will be heavily scrutinized all the way down to wondering if he farts in his sleep. I mean would not his fart be put to better use on the set where the actor has to pretend he is looking at something disgusting? The fart would help with facial expressions. Good luck Mr. Trevorrow!

with the enormous success of JURASSIC WORLD speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled filmmaker.

I have no issue with him directing a Star Wars film, he can't do any worse than Lucas on Episode 1, 2, and 3 because the director is in charge of the actors and their performance. However, what I do take issue with is the statement in my header. Jurassic World was a fun movie and he played a role in making it that way, but to credit its monumental success to him as a director saying he is a great storyteller is a bit of an oversight. Jurassic World was a fun movie and he played a role in making it that way, but to credit its monumental success to him as a director saying he is a great storyteller is a bit of an oversight. Jurassic World hit at the right time, with an already established brand. It had one of Hollywood's fastest rising stars in it with Pratt, which speaks more towards Spielberg as producer. And people came for the DINOSAURS which he had nothing to do with, that is the special effects teams job. His job is to tell the actor where to look and when to scream because there is a dinosaur chasing you. We heap way too much praise on the director when a movie is a hit, consequently they do suffer the brunt of the blame when it flops (I am looking at you Trank). Two films does not a great storyteller make (especially when your piggy-backing off an established franchise). Yet I think he will be fine for the job. It is not like you need Scorsese for Star Wars!

I agree. But then lets not forget that the same statement can be made about Joss Whedon and The Avengers:
also an established brand (that did not sleep for well over a decade but churns out 2-3 movies each year) with Hollywood's biggest and highest paid star at the moment and people came watching for the superhero carnage done by the spechial effects team. His job was to tell actors where to look and deliver their flat puns because there is a digital villain.

You sure like to throw around the term Fanboys a lot, and always in a derogatory way. Yet, here you are posting again on another thread like we all do, throwing in your two cents. And you have mentioned you are in your late thirties, you post at all hours of the day (living in moms basement are we?), and you have a Beavis and Butthead icon. I am pretty sure you are a nerd as well as a Fanboy. SO use some self-reflection and stop hating on passionate fans.

Because they are a fucking joke, no worse than Star Wars fans who are about the same age as me & they made me loathe Star Wars. You have nearly 40 year old grown ass men dressing up as the fucking characters & the ones that did manage to breed pass that shit on to their kids. They literally nitpick every little detail about these fucking movies & bitch & moan about how terrible the prequels are. I will never respect a Star Wars fanboy, comic book fanboys are just as annoying as well.

BTW

BTW for some reason I can't change my avatar, but B&B is way better than anything Star Wars. I post late in the night because I work long hours & my job is boring.. I wouldn't even classify fanboys as nerds, so calling me that is a compliment.

I don't understand why everyone is saying he is a safe choice. I need more explanation. I see an Indie director that made an awesome record breaking sequel to a franchise that most people thought could not be resurrected, while being his first shot at wide released feature film. I think he is an excellent choice and his style seems to fit Star Wars well.

Well, being chosen to direct Jurassic World was a risk, but Trevorrow gave Kathleen Kennedy 1,582,418,897 reasons to select him as the director of Episode 9. He may have just been an indie filmmaker when he made Safety Not Guaranteed, but he graduated to blockbusters after Jurassic World's success.

Solid choice to direct and also a very safe choice as well. If he can make his Star Wars film as much fun, and entertaining as Jurassic World than we are in for another great entry in the Star Wars universe.

One can only hope for another trilogy (sans "Anthology") after Ep.9

Was actually hoping Lucasfilm would've brought on Brad Bird (MI:4, Tomorrrowland) or Duncan Jones (Moon, Warcraft)

"Jurassic World" was pretty awesome for what it was (soft reboot), So Colin directing Ep.9 doesn't sound all that bad,

I feel that this is more of a safe choice instead of an interesting one. You can't really blame them, after what's happened with Trank. I guess by the time we get to episode IX, we won't want the director changing up the style too much anyway. I'm fine with this choice, but surprised he took it since I thought he wasn't doing the Jurassic World sequel to focus on more original ideas.

I don't judge quality by box office receipts. Avatar wasn't very good. Jurassic World certainly wasn't very good. Plus, Jurassic World was going to do huge business regardless of director. Star Wars is another one of those properties that'll break every box office record there is no matter who is behind the camera. Just give me a good director. Give me Cuaron. Give me Edgar Wright. Somebody interesting.
