Dan Aykroyd looks to expand Ghostbusters into a Marvel-style universe

Last Updated on July 22, 2021

If the thought of a GHOSTBUSTERS 3 makes your stomach turn, you're probably not gonna like what original 'Buster Dan Aykroyd wants to see happen with the franchise.

We've been hearing talks of a planned third outing for the GHOSTBUSTERS, including one rumor that we could be seeing an all-female reboot, but star Dan Aykroyd is looking at the bigger picture sharing that he's hoping for more than just a one-off return. We're talking a Marvel-style universe of GHOSTBUSTERS films and TV series, folks.

Says Aykroyd:

"It’s beyond just another sequel, a prequel, another TV show. I'm thinking what does the whole brand mean to Sony? What does Pixar and Star Wars mean to Disney? What does Marvel mean to Fox?"

Aykroyd said new movies could explore…

“…the whole mythology from the beginning of their lives, the end of their lives. Ghostbusters at nine years old, Ghostbusters in high school.

“The whole vehicle of Ghostbusters has to be rebuilt. That’s the ambitious thinking that’s going on now. Taking on the model of Marvel where we take all of the elements that are in this movie and we put them out there as different ideas.”

He added that the focus must be "not just another movie or another TV show, but what’s the totality of it?".

And what of that proposed all-female GHOSTBUSTERS reboot? Aykroyd reveals that there isn't even a script, stating…

"We need to write it."

So does this mean we won't be seeing a new GHOSTBUSTERS film in 2015 as expected? Is it all just wishful thinking and speculation right now? Probably. We'd really like to know something solid on a new GHOSTBUSTERS film, but right now all we can do is share what we're hearing and hope that something, anything, comes out of all of this. Actually, I'm more on the "Leave GHOSTBUSTERS alone" side of the fence, but if the franchise has to continue I'd rather Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman be involved in some capacity.

More on GHOSTBUSTERS as we hear it.
