Dane Cook to lead the voice cast of Disney's Planes, the spin-off of, what else, Cars

Feb. 28, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The Disney spin-off of CARS, the aptly titled PLANES, which was once to be a direct-to-DVD affair, is now getting a theatrical release (in 3D, no less) and today it was announced that Dane Cook will lead the voice cast, starring as Dusty, a small-engine plane competing in, what else, a race.  Cook is the latest actor up for the role, which was once rumored to have been Jon Cryer or Jesse Eisenberg.

We also have a look at the teaser trailer for the film, which was teased last year, but quicky removed by the studio, while they figured out just what the hell they were going to do with the movie.  Either way, the TOP GUN-esque teaser is complete with a little White Zombie to crank up the action and features a voice that is likely not Dane Cook.  PLANES is directed by Disneytoon Studios veteran and aviation enthusiast Klay Hall who had nothing but good things to say about the casting of Cook:

“Dane Cook brings unmatched charisma and brilliant comedic timing and instincts to the character. He gives Dusty a great edge.”

Here's the synopsis:

The all-new story offers an exciting cast of characters and centers on Dusty’s high-flying dream. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing, so he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

Meh.  There's certainly potential that this could be fun, but really it just feels like more of the same.  Underdog talking vehicle competes in a race to overcome his own self doubt and internal conflict to find his true calling in life.  I mean, Dreamworks is giving us the exact same thing, only with a snail with the Ryan Reynolds-led TURBO this summer.  We are beating our kids over the head with the whole "life is a race" theme.

PLANES is slated to hit on

Extra Tidbit: I thought My Best Friend's Girl was pretty damn hilarious and have enjoyed Cook's stand up. He had a pretty good self-deprecating appearance on Louie as well. Do you think he gets a bad rap?

You know, I was wondering what was happenning with this movie. I remember seeing a preview at least a year ago. And I remember Dave Foley as the voice (Flick from Bug's Life), or so I thought. Too bad they changed it. The Cars films aren't Pixar's best, but I enjoyed them. I have no hope for this however. I've seen a few of the Disney "cheap-quels", and most were absolute trash that wouldn't be interesting to anyone over 8. I fear this will be the same.

Wow, they're really trying their hardest to get us to not like this movie, huh?

meh

doesnt really matter who they cast. im not a huge fan of Cook and some balk at his standup material, saying it makes him a poor choice for a kids movie. but his VOICE is fine and as for his material being inappropriate, Patton Oswalt (whom i love) is raunchy as hell but was perfect for Rattatouille

So the man who made a joke about the Aurora shooting is in a kids movie? Way to go Disney.

It's just a voice. 5 year old kids won't care that it's Dane Cook, and the fanbase is already established. It's not like Cook is writing the jokes.

Cars 2 was not a cash grab

This is.

Yes "Cars" made more money from merchandising than it did at the box office, but thats not the reason Cars 2 happened. Cars was a passion project from John Lasseter. He loved writing and making those movies. Cars 2 started production right after the first one was released, before a legacy was formed. Disney approached Pixar about a sequel and Pixar wanted to do it their way, how they see fit. Disney wanted more and forced this film into production. Cars 2 was an honest job from

This movie just sounds like a bad idea. In all honesty, I am probably one of the few people who is not a huge fan of Cars. Not that it wasn't good, I just thought it was a mediocre entry in Pixar/Disney's catalogue of movies. But further more, after releasing Car 2, is there really a need for this movie? I can't really think of it as a spinoff as these characters were not really a big part of the Cars franchise and just seems like they've found a fresh way to capitalize on the same market.

As for the extra tidbit, I totally think Dane Cook gets a bad wrap. His stand up is pretty good and he's a hell of a comedian. His acting is decent as well, I think he has potential to be a good lead in a certain type of comedy. But could definitely make an acting career out of being the comedic best friend in movies. I think back to Five Year Engagement and feel if Chris Pratt wasn't able to play the best friend, Dane Cook would have made a good substitute.

“Dane Cook brings unmatched charisma and brilliant comedic timing and instincts to the character. He gives Dusty a great edge.”

In other words, he said he'd do the movie cheap.

If they're hiring Dane Cook to be the lead voice, then Pixar must know that Planes will suck and they're just trying to cast someone and they chose Dane Cook because thy know he'll accept.

I don't think Pixar is doing this one. I think Disney's doing all by themselves

Oooooh....I didn't know that, but still, what I said applies to Disney as well.

DOOOOUUUCHE BAG supreme!

I am saddened by this news as my soon to be 4 year old twins are all about this. I'm assuming the lead plane is from Prop-Wash Junction, visited by Mater in the Car-Toon, 'Air-Mater', which has been played in our household countless times. AND this teaser is on one of our Disney or Pixar BluRays.

I like Dane Cook and have enjoyed his bit parts in Waiting, Mr. Brooks, and Dan in Real Life. Hopefully he isn't too comedic or amped up to the point where the character is annoying.

I'll give Cook the benefit of a doubt with this one.

I've tried to give his standup a chance but it just really isn't funny. It's like watching a Twilight movie with your girlfriend and thinking "maybe this time it will get better", but it never does. Even his voice just erks me the wrong way. I usually watch stuff like this with my nieces, but I wont subject them to Dane Cook, I'll just skip it.

his stand up is good the firsttime i hear it, but i never want to listen a second time. And dispite the amount of bad movies he's done, there has been 1 or 2 i did like. I dont have high hopes for this but i'll probably eventually see it because im a Disney fanboy that actually liked both "Cars" movies
