Daniel Bruhl says Baron Zemo won't have a mask in Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War Anthony Russo Joe Russo Daniel Bruhl Banner

I've got some disappointing news for all you Baron Zemo fans out there. Daniel Bruhl will star as the Marvel villain in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, and the actor recently revealed to Business Insider that he won't be wearing the character's trademark purple mask.

Bruhl went on to say his Baron Zemo will be "different than what you'd think" and is "loosely connected" to the comic book version, while also adding "That's what I like about the Marvel guys, some of the characters and things they're dealing with always reference to current events so my character is from a different area than you would think." But the actor also says "there's a possibility" he could return as the villain for future movies since "that's the way it's written," so I'm hopeful that the character will end up donning his classic mask for his next big screen outing. Are bummed that Bruhl's Baron Zemo won't look exactly like he does in the comics?

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is due in theaters on May 6, 2016.

Guy with a sheet over his head and a metal headband - works in comics maybe, but probably not on film. That's not to say they couldn't have given him a cooler mask that maybe just hinted at his comicbook look, but I can understand why they didn't just go with the way he was portrayed in the old stories. Thing is, the MCU has already robbed Zemo of one of his greatest achievements in the comics - taking out Bucky - so there's not much point being too precious about being true to the old school

Well that really doesn't make a lot of sense...

But I guess it can be worked around. Though, there damn well better be some purple in his costume at some point. Maybe have him wearing a purple hood If even for a moment.

I'm about as big a comic book guy as can be, and I definitely give Marvel a ton of credit for things, but this won't be one of them. The mask is part of what makes this character, and the reason being is he can't take off the mask. Its actually grafted to his face to the point he cannot eat and has to use IV for sustenance. Cap is the reason for it, and hence the hatred for him. Now if its an origin for him thats one thing, but if its just a random German dude running around being evil, well

I saw below the Batroc reference, and I wish he was a little more Batroc'y but Batroc's mask wasn't key to his character like Zemo's and they had him in the colors.

Well duh, how is he suppose to drink wine with a mask on like in the main picture.

That's the point, in the comics he doesn't eat, he can't. The mask got grafted to his face in the comics. The only way he could "eat&drink" was via IV for the rest of his life, and it was a fight with cap that led to it, hence his hatred for him.

The fact that it seems he will not wear the mask at all kind of defeats the idea of having the character appear onscreen. They could have him appear and unmask and at least we'd get to see a version of the classic character. Even the 90's Captain America movie where the Red Skull had plastic surgery he at least appeared in the classic look early on (although why he was Italian remains a mystery.)

I like what Marvel did with Batroc in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. If the movie version of Baron Zemo is somewhere along that line, I'm fine with that.

You don't hire actors to appear in a movie and then cover their faces with a mask for the whole movie.

The movies mentioned either reference characters who are protagonists of their respective movies and get a fair amount of screentime without their masks on, or characters who the majority of movie audiences wouldn't know the actor playing the roll. How many casual movie watchers know that Karl Urban played Judge Dredd? Hell, how many casual movie watchers SAW Dredd? My point being that covering an actor's face, and not giving them mask-less screen time, isn't doing an actor any favors. Even

Even Bane gets a mask-less scene in TDKR and David Prowse gets zero recognition for his portrayal of Darth Vader.

@blah_zam Given that Judge Dredd can be described as a niche comic book and therefore following I don't think the term casual movie goer applies. As this is a marvel film which now hits hundreds of homes and families due to its extension advertising, toy line and star power in addition to its strong comic book following - I'd say it's a poor point not very well made.
i'd also point out that Prowse was not an actor - he was more famous for body building and often these roles are sought for

David Prowse as Darth Vader & Hugo Weaving as V from V for Vendetta. That's probably the only two character in any movie that actually didn't take off their full face masks throughout the whole movie. Heck, when Vader did open his helmet he was played by someone else. But apparently Hugo Weaving did all his acting as V in the mask (save for one kind of ambiguous scene where it's just hinted that it's V in disguise).

That's disappointing to hear, but I'm sure Marvel will stay true to Baron Zemo in some fashion and form. But none the less, it's perfect casting.
