Daniel Day-Lewis and Spielberg team up for Lincoln

11.19.2010by:

Steven Spielberg's planned Abraham Lincoln biopic was thought all but dead, especially with the news that he'd follow-up WAR HORSE with ROBOPOCALYPSE but Mr. Spielberg is feeling a little extra motivation and has committed to directing LINCOLN in late-2011 after he wraps on ROBOPOCALYPSE. What's more? He's snagged the notoriously choosy Daniel Day-Lewis to star as his Abraham Lincoln.

Said Spielberg, "Daniel Day-Lewis would have always been counted as one of the greatest of actors, were he from the silent era, the golden age of film or even some time in cinema's distant future. I am grateful and inspired that our paths will finally cross with LINCOLN."

Said Day-Lewis, "..." Yeah, he didn't comment.

The script, from Tony Kushner, is based on the book "Team of Rivals" by presidential historian and all around sexy lady Doris Kearns Goodwin. Disney will release the DreamWorks film through their Touchstone Pictures label in 2012.

So we get FOUR Spielberg films - TINTIN, WAR HORSE, ROBOPOCALPYSE and LINCOLN - in two years? I'll take it.

Extra Tidbit: I'll bet you all can't wait until we run the "Cast This: Mary Todd Lincoln!" article.

Ingenuis casting

This is probably the most well prepared and studied actor working today. In There Will Be Blood his best acting isn't when he's intense, it's when Plainview is not speaking, in many scenes where he sells exactly what he is thinking. The best acting is when an actor sells it non verbally.
He will take on this role as President Lincoln with much fervor. He will prepare and study. He'll have a full year to do so. He'll also work the accent out to best of authentcity.

This casting is pure genius. Not only is Day-Lewis a master thesp, but he resembles Linclon, he's tall and sinewy and the exact age.
It will very interesting on who Spieberg cast in the supporting roles, many which are considered historically famous.

It's about freaking time they moved forward with this flick! Now we finally have an historical biopic to look forward to and is rare that we get a movie like this these days. Daniel Day Lewis is the perfect second choice because he is great in these type of films. Can't wait for this film! Now if only they can make an high budget film about The Great Chicago Fire of 1871, it could be the next Titanic, maybe.

Although I do love Daniel Day-Lewis and think he'll do a fine job, I can't help but think that this is Neeson's role. He looks, acts, and has the build for Lincoln. Neeson was born to play this role.

That picture is awesome. As soon as I read the headline I thought "Bill the Butcher is going to be Honest Abe!" and then boom, there's the picture. Brilliant casting.

I don't want to be a dick or anything, but the source to this news item is Joblo.com? Just wondering because normally you cite Deadline or Variety or other trustworthy sources.

As for the casting, he's a great actor so I'm sure he'll excel at this.

Great

love Lewis so this is good news to me. could be a record 3rd oscar for him.

Mary Todd Lincoln, depending on how they want the portray her, i'd cast Helena Bodham Carter

Pfffft. Funny that there's an article off to the side right now called "Wrong Actor For the Job?" - because Daniel Ham-Everything-Up Day Lewis is TOTALLY wrong for this.

But.

This IS Steven Spielberg...and so will I see it? F*ck yeah. Obviously, SOMEthing is good about this move, to him...

...ah, dammit, WHY couldn't it have been Liam Neeson like had been originally planned?!

It looks like once again Bill the Butcher gave a beatdown to Priest Vallon, by having Day-Lewis take over for the rumored Neeson. But both actors are great, and having my favorite director do a film about my favorite president means this should be awesome.

All you have to do is mention it, and you just did.

Natalie Portman, or course.

If you want to see a great movie watch "Young Mr Lincoln". I highly recommend it, If you have a netflix account I would watch it that way because its in Criterion Collection and somewhat pricey But a must watch. As for this new movie it will probably follow his presidency, but probably wont have the impact of the movie I recommended!

I know it wouldn't make a bit of sense, but I hope Daniel Day Lewis plays Lincoln like he played "Bill the Butcher" from Gangs of New York.

Spielberg/Lewis=OSCAR!

With Spielberg, Kushner and Lewis I see the little gold men lining up already. And if anyone can get people into a theater to watch a movie about Abe Lincoln it's these guys!

I knew he'd play Lincoln one day!

I actually suggested him for the role in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter in here not too long back. Sucks (no pun intended) that he really most likely won't be in that now, but it's still gonna be cool to see him in this.

Now Neeson HAS to hunt down some bloodsuckers. He just has too!

I smell another Oscar of Lewis

Spielberg is keeping himself very busy. He's got Tintin and War Horse coming out next year, and Robopocalypse and Lincoln for 2012. Hopefully this means we'll get Indiana Jones by 2013.

Cool... but...

A little odd that they didn't mention Neeson who, according to reports, has been on hold for this role for years.
