Danny Glover is Captain Ahab? And Moby Dick is a dragon?

Feb. 23, 2010by: Mike Sampson

Oh Danny Glover... I don't want to hate on you for taking a paycheck but did you really sign on to a C-level direct-to-DVD film that reimagines Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" as a futuristic dragon movie? Of course you did. I'm, after all, talking to the guy who signed on to star in PREDATOR 2. But I mean, c'mon Danny, aren't you too old for this shit?

DRAGON FIRE is currently filming in Provo, Utah (the first place I think of when I think of "Moby Dick" with dragons) and a local TV station recently ran a behind-the-scenes look at the film. The announcer is ridiculously optimistic (he talks about it possibly being a "box office smash") and one of the filmmakers does his interview laying down in a hammock. They say it's scheduled for release sometime in October but what kind of release remains to be seen (go for it SciFi, you know you want to).

Extra Tidbit: Provo, UT...isn't that where Boyd Aviation is headquartered?

Three of my favorite names..

Marvin, Thelma and Provo...

And it's "SyFy" now, let's not forget.

Poor Danny Glover. He was "too old for this shit" back in the 80's doing Lethal Weapon.

I wanted to rewrite "Atlas Shrugged" as a science-fiction movie set in space with "galaxy trains". but I can't even imagine what the rights to that book would cost and Angelina Jolie has her grubby giners on the character Dagny.

Honestly, they could have done an awesome job with Moby Dragon if they knew the themes they were dealing with and could apply it properly.

That video was hilarious. I love the deadly serious guy on the hammock (director?). He reminds me of Uwe Boll. If there's one thing I've always said about Moby Dick, it's that it should have had dragons and Danny Glover in it.

1--Danny Glover starring in something? Good for him.

2--Moby Dick-like plot? Sure.

3--It doesn't appear to be direct to DVD, after all.

Conclusion: beats me.

Sadly its Syfy now and

oddly I'm conflicted. On one hand I love this book, have read it many times. On the other I love dragons.....

And don't forget . . .

Provo is also home of the Mormon Twins.

Ryan Little was the director of (the not too bad) "Saints and Soldiers". But given the other cast, crew, etc. (I'm well-versed in film-making in Central Utah), this will be appearing in the dump-bins and impulse racks at your local Albertson's by Christmas. If they don't run out of money first.

Haha! I have to agree with you. I too am somewhat familiar with the filmmaking scene up there and...well...impulse racks at your local albertsons pretty much sums up most of the product coming out of there.

speaking of sci-fi channel original movies, the company has to know that they're almost utterly unwatchable.. right? The commercials for them sound so serious and glorifying that sometimes I have no idea if they even get it.

Who would win in a real Alien vs. Predator?
Alien.
Why?
Because even Danny glover can defeat a Predator.

I liked it better when Christian Bale did this movie and called it Reign of Fire.

if it's in the future, Moby Dick should be a giant robot not a dragon!!! Dragons are from the past!! COME ON!

This is what Danny Glover gets for being such a pompous douche bag. He opens his mouth and makes continually uneducated statements about politics and calls everyone racist and that just pisses people off. So it is nice to see him relegated to C level tripe. Hopefully this will end his career.

Oh....and Provo, UT is where Melvin and Velma Stanwyck live. Boyd aviation is in California.

It's like if you took "Beowulf," and reimagined it as a futuristic monster movie starring Christopher Lambert ... oh, wait.

Kinda cute, in a sad way.

I'm not going to come down to hard on this. It looks like it could be a good time. I'm guessing we aren't looking at a blockbuster here, but... I dunno. They all look so happy. I just can't bring myself to tear this one apart without seeing it first. I like those kinds of movies. Sometimes. I hope this is one of those times.
