Danny Rand won't be wearing his costume in Netflix's Iron Fist series

03.06.2017

People have been really responding to Marvel's recent Netflix shows, with DAREDEVIL, JESSICA JONES, and LUKE CAGE all being smash successes. Now, we've come to the final member of the DEFENDERS team, which is Danny Rand, better known as IRON FIST. I would say he's probably the hardest to adapt out of the four, with his overt "mystic Orientalism" backstory, and his more outlandish costume (currently the only member to sport one other than Daredevil).

However, we might not even see the costume on the show at all (hell, even DAREDEVIL wore his costume by the end of the first season). Here's what showrunner Scott Buck said about the decision:

There was no good reason we could imagine to put Danny Rand in a costume. Because Danny Rand is still discovering who he is as a hero and where he is going to be, so he’s not yet ready to put on a mask or a costume… At the same time he is someone who is rather well known as a billionaire, so he can’t necessarily go out in public and do the things he does without being recognized. It does become an issue for the character...We’re trying to keep things extremely grounded and real and tell our stories through characters. So the mystical aspect is something we like to hint at, the idea that there is something bigger and larger out there, but we don’t delve into it all that deeply.

I mean, I guess with a lot of studios trying to "ground" their superhero stories, I suppose it's cool that Rand's fist glows and he has a dragon tattoo at all. Sometimes we gotta take what we can get. Hopefully he'll be sporting his green-and-yellow leotards in THE DEFENDERS series, especially if Finn Jones if filling them out...

Meanwhile, IRON FIST will punch dragons and stream on Netflix March 17th, 2017.

Extra Tidbit: Ray Park pushed for years to star in a big-budget IRON FIST movie. Unfortunately, that one obviously didn't have a DEADPOOL-like happy ending.

Looking forward to the show, not liking we wont see the costume. The reason they give for no costume is bullshit, its like not giving Black Panther his costume.

Okay, I can see a few good reasons that he would wear a costume just in that dude's reason for why he wouldn't wear one. But the biggest reason he should wear a costume is, BECAUSE HE IS A FUCKING SUPERHERO!!!!! Don't make a fucking superhero show if you don't want the characters to be superheroes! For fucks' sake! I really don't get this "grounded" line of thinking. I don't like the DD costume, but he is still wearing a mask with devil horns on it. There is no practical reason for him to have

There is no practical reason for him to have devil horns, BUT, he does. PLUS, having a "ninja" type character or a character who comes from a background of characters that already wear those "costumes" makes it natural to have them do that! Just because these non-comic guys are creating these shows and don't get the costumes need, doesn't make the decision to not include them valid. Look at Spider-Man. He probably doesn't need a costume either but it is fucking awesome because he wears one. Figure that out already. Let your freak flags wave guys. Cmon'!

i agree 10000000000000 %.
i am fucking sick of it.
in the next X-men film i want to see how much Charles pays for his property tax. how much does he charge his students? Doesnt anyone get hurt at the schoole or sue the place?

I mean this fucking reaslims is great for dramatic films that require it. its a SUPERHERO SHOW/MOVIE. if you dont fucking like superheroes DONT MAKE ANY MOVIES ABOUT THEM.

Why is it that antman and captain america etc, can come up with something to make realistic

Anyway, its been said, but now DD will look like a fucking tool when the defenders (who are not really the defenders - where is Dr Strange?) get together.

but this is a pointless argument because someone will say to "well if you dont have to watch the show" etc.

Good to know.

Now I don't have to watch the series to see what the costume looks like.

Man this is going to leave the Defenders so open to parody. Everyone who meets them pointing to Daredevil and saying "why is he dressed so funny." And they whisper to the person asking "he's blind and we haven't the heart to tell him."

It's part of every superhero's identity!!!

It's part of every superhero's identity!!! If you can't figure out to do it, then you aren't the right person to adapt the show...

I guess what they're trying to say is, "We can't get the disco collar to work yet without making him look silly."

Going to be so awkward when the Defenders get together and Daredevil is the only one wearing a costume.

He should at least have the mask....

I mean what's the point of him not wearing it? This is a "universe" where superheroes exist (even in Danny's immediate area) so he'd know from the moment he was going out into public that if he was recognized he'd be in constant danger (from the criminals and law enforcement). Even the idiot protesters who are breaking stuff out there wear masks. Why wouldn't a guy like him?

To be fair, with the Accords being actively enforced, wearing a costume could put an even bigger target on your back than going around in street clothes
