Darabont Walking Dead

08.11.2009

Horror and comic fans will be thrilled to hear that the zombie series THE WALKING DEAD is coming to screens. But while those screens will be small, the talent involved is pretty big.

Filmmaker Frank Darabont (THE MIST, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) is developing the fan-fave ongoing Image comic as a new series for cable channel AMC, currently on fire thanks to acclaimed shows "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad".

Robert Kirkman's dark book follows a group of survivors trying to find food, shelter and some small indication of hope in a post-apocalyptic world mostly populated by flesh-craving zombies. The cinematic and shocking series is perhaps best known for how these remaining humans interact, and for a cheerful willingness to gruesomely maim or kill regular characters without warning.

Gale Anne Hurd (ALIENS, T2) is also producing the project.

Extra Tidbit: Darabont once considered making a miniseries sequel of Carpenter's THE THING for the Sci-Fi Channel.

Yay!

I always thought this comic was perfect for TV! Another dream comes true today and an angel gets its wings or whatever.

It'll be too watered down. Right people, right project, wrong place to put it.

amc puts out some quality shows

can't see any reason as to why this wouldn't be good. especially with darabont at the creative helm.

Move to HBO

This should be on HBO, not AMC just because of the content. How are you going to show any of this on this channel? It won't happen, I watch Breaking Bad and they cannot really show too much. And I have actually started adapting this myself, I am glad it is in the hands of Darabont.

Yay but...

... they better not try to shine over what happens to the characters, if they do I will be extremely pissed, but if anyone will stick to darker tones it is indeed Darabont... odd this news comes out the day a new issue of TWD hits as well as the Vol. 10 TPB

this is awesome news, The Walking Dead is one of my favorite series. i'm really glad they are doing this on tv instead of theaters, the story is too big to try and squeeze into a 120 minute movie. As for the gore i'm sure there will be plenty, the censors only really care about sex and language. Now if only they would make Y: The Last Man into a tv series instead of trying to cram it onto big screens, i think it would be perfect on HBO even as like a miniseries like Band of Brothers or John

Nice.

I can imagine it being similar in atmosphere to The Mist.

I really love the series! I think 64 comes out tomorrow.

Sweet! It's true that the gore could be a bit of an issue, but, like others have said, THE WALKING DEAD is more about the characters than the violence. And hey, if anyone can do this thing right, it's Darabont.

The Walking Dead...

...is one of the best current comic series' available! A TV Series might be pretty cool but I would be far more amped to see a big-screen version. Regardless, of course I would watch it!

Gore optional.

First of all, this is the best news I've heard in ages! Perfect director/producer, and perfect channel. The gore isn't what makes this series so great, it's the human element, who truly are "The Walking Dead," of this series. If USA network can show poorly edited versions of "Dawn of the Dead," I think AMC will have plenty of leeway to get the gruesome effects needed. Again, great news!

This is in good hands. No doubt Darabont will vie for it to be in black and white.
And hopefully he'll be able to give Kirkman an ending. Because I know Kirkman has no idea where it's all headed.

First post and first to say it: what about the gore? It's an integral part of the series. We'll see.
