Dark Knight forever?

02.05.2009

THE DARK KNIGHT In this day and age, when a movie makes an unprecedented assload of money, like THE DARK KNIGHT, what's the studio's next play? Make a sequel, of course. How many, exactly? Lots. As long as people keep paying, they'll keep milking that shit for all it's worth. Case in point: SAW. The point here is that Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes, who owns Warner Bros., recently mentioned at a press conference that he's planning on making Batman films for as long as they keep making assloads of money. He says, "The obvious thing we're going to take from it is more Dark Knight. We look at Harry Potter, it's fantastic to have franchises that last that long. We want to do that with Batman and Superman and perhaps Sherlock Holmes. The sequels are as good, with new characters added, as were the originals. That wasn't the case years ago." So rest easy, fanboys, you'll be getting as much Batman as you're willing to pay for.

are they fucking retarded? Are you trying to compare Harry Potter to Batman? Harry Potter is not lasting forever, it was 7 blockbuster high selling books, that turned into 7 (well, 8 with the two part finale) blockbuster high selling movies.

How can you compare that to Batman sequels which will be completely original

As long as they have a real plan....

I'm good with this news. But I think they should do less talking and get on with it. I'm sick to death of studios saying they are going to do something, but don't end up keeping promises to fans.
Anyone remember the Superman Lives poster "coming 1997"

Batman 1989 - Awesome
Batman Returns - Good
Batman Forever - Decent
Batman & Robin - Terrible
Batman Begins - Amazing
The Dark Knight - Fantastic

Depends on a person's point of view, but make no mistake, batman Returns was NOT a terrible movie. But it was much darker than the other movies. It wasn't a movie very suitable for children, like they wanted it.

Hey pteK, the original Burton Batman was "pretty good", but Batman Returns was absolutely terrible. I just wanted to clear this up, because the Burton movies were anything but "amazing".

I could go either way...

On one hand... 3rd in the series is always the worst... Spiderman, X-men, the original Superman... The series were destroyed when the franchise turned trilogy...

However, with a visionary like Nolan, I can't imagine it being bad... Maybe not as good as Dark Knight, or even as good as Begins, but not bad by any means. Now, if he doesn't return, they better find a damn good replacement... Michael Mann, David Fincher, hell, even Bryan Singer... Oh, oh... Do you think Joel Schumacher's too busy?

Hey remember how WB did this in the 90s when Burton did two amazing Batman films that made so much money it convinced them to keep the franchise going and going, and then it died?

History repeating.

sequels

I'd say make at least three more Batman films, get the Superman films back on track and I'll wait to see if I'm willing to pay for another Sherlock Holmes even though I'm pretty sure RDJR will do with Sherlock what he did with IRONMAN.

There's definitely gonna be a third Batman movie, with or without Nolan. Nolan has admitted to working on a script and unless something goes horribly wrong (a falling out between Nolan, Warner Bros, or Bale) I don't see much standing in the way of us seeing Nolan's third Batman movie.

Saw is a good example of where Warner Bros intends to take the franchise. They'll be making these movies long past Nolan abandoning the franchise for something better. By then we can expect Warner Bros to hire

Although this sounds like a crazily good amount of good news, I'm gonna' have to be honest and say that my love for this franchise will only allow me to be excited for 3 movies. Werid, huh? I'd love to keep watching Batman flicks till I'm 70, but I'd hate to see one of Nolan's brainchilds go to waste. I'm not even sure if he can top his own movie now with a third, but here's to hoping. Make a third, and I'll be a very happy fan.

whatever

As long as the movies stay good, i don't care who makes them or who stars in them. And WTF is up with some of you people and this trilogy shit? Is this a new fad or something? It isn't "good" if it isn't a trilogy? Get the fuck over it. Reread my first sentence on how i feel about trilogies and such.

History will repeat itself.

Bale will stop making them so they'll try one actor, it'll fail, they'll try another actor, it'll fail bigger, and Batman would be left in a vault for at least a decade, till someone decides to reboot it

We need one more Batman movie with Bale and Nolan that shuts down that trilogy and then maybe NIght Fall which maybe should be the third movie. Maybe...three for now though or they will taint the art behind the movies currently out now like they are doing to the poor terminator franchise

The way I see it

As long as there are good stories, and judging by the comics there's a lot, keep 'em coming.

I agree with thenumberseven and what a lot of others have said. Yes, Nolan and Bale will probably only do three films, but I'd have no problem with them hiring another talented team to do additional films. I mean just because Nolan's out doesn't mean we have to wait 10 years for another reboot. Besides, why reboot an already good series? It makes to simply pick up where the previous team left off.

As long as...

... there are fans of Batman, we'll keep getting movies.

Just look at how many comics there are and how long the character has been around.

Hell, they filmed serials back as far as the 1940's.

He'll outlive all of us. Try to get over it.

REDUNDANT

Listen, I love TDK as much as the next film nut but what the industry needs is not more sequels, it needs more motivation for progressive talent. How did they get The Dark Knight? Because of Christopher fucking Nolan. A director who took risks and had a shitload of motivation. Nolan knows that a story has to evolve, you can't force an endless parade of sequels just because you can make money. Oh wait they can. My point is that hopefully the recession will force studios to cut back on endless

There's no reason that the Nolanverse can't be continued once Nolan is done with the series. Just keep the franchise in the hands of capable directors and let them run with it. No surprise here. Anyone who is against this is delusional.

I remember hearing that Warner Brothers/DC would consider Batman Begins a successful endeavour if it generated $3-billion in revenue (with merchandising and such). That's WAY too much $ to sit on.

I say let Nolan and Bale finish what they are doing with the younger batman. Then in a few years, reboot focusing on an older batman, and bring in robin/nightwing, and other villians that won't be used in the Nolan films. Or let WB get superman going again and have superman vs. batman. This will keep the integrity of Nolan's films without depriving fans of more batman films.

I think...

...they should keep making DC movies. I think they will keep making money off them as long as they are well made movies like Batman Begins and Superman Returns. Most didn't like the plot of Superman, but you have to admit, it was a well made movie. I also think they should do some crossovers such as a Batman/Superman movie. The Superman/Batman dynamic is awesome i think.

23 is probably most accurate

This is not an endorsement as much as it is an acknowledgement that there will always be Batman. And there will always be movies about him. Chris Nolan's version has done very well at deconstructing much of the mythology built up over the past seventy years, but his is just the latest of the bunch. There'll be CGI Batman some day, and maybe even marionette Batman if they so will it. It is larger than Christian Bale, Christopher Nolan, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, or the drawn-out mourning of

Obviously I don't want it to turn into the SAW series, but I say the more the merrier. As long as they don't start sucking. And if they ever do start sucking, start over. Batman kicks ass. BB and TDK were awesome but it's not like the franchise is the freaking Godfather. It's Batman, people. Keep 'em coming!

To alucard

Why wait 10 years or reboot? How long did Bond go before a reboot, or Zorro? Batman doesn't need endless reboots, just good sequels. Even after the "Nolan Trilogy", there is a bounty of Batman story and mythos to be explored. Just make it good, and hire Fincher!

Horrible!

Jesus, if Nolan decides he's got a good enough story to round off a nice trilogy, let him do it IN HIS OWN TIME! until then noone should even touch this franchise. Once Nolan is finished with bats, maybe wait like 10 years then maybe, just maybe, if the story is right, a reboot can be attempted. These sort of announcements constantly prove that the people in charge really have no fucking idea about making good movies.

Even though I know Nolan would never do it, I'd love to see the series completed at five films covering the first ten or so years of Batman. There's still many quality villains out there that haven't been covered, it just sucks that the Joker and Two-Face won't be able to be used again.
