Darren Aronofsky has left The Wolverine!

Mar. 17, 2011by: Paul Tassi

Wow, very rarely does movie news make me legitimately sad, but this breaking story practically brings a tear to my eye.

One of my most anticipated upcoming films was going to be Darren Aronofksy's THE WOLVERINE. Finally, the character would get the treatment he deserved at the hands of a phenomenal director! But as of today, that dream is no more.

Stated Aronofsky: "As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of ‘The Wolverine’ would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won't be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again."

Stated Twentieth Century Fox: “While we are of course disappointed that Darren can’t do ‘The Wolverine’, we also understand and respect his reasons. Having done both ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Black Swan’ with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making ‘The Wolverine’. We will regroup and move forward aggressively.”

Well, I was hoping for a "Fox f*cked this up" explanation so I could just yell at them, but I suppose I can't rip a guy for wanting to be with his family. I guess he's having some custody issues with his ex, Rachel Weisz over their son which has a lot to do with this decision, and can't be in Japan filming for a year because of what's going on.

Fox wants to now "move forward aggressively" with the project, but I say just shelve it until he's available again. It's not like we're going to forget about Wolverine in another year or two.

A sad day indeed.

Extra Tidbit: Allegedly the disaster in Japan didn't have anything to do with this, but probably kind of a messed up place to travel to and shoot a film right now.

OK, I understand...but

This really sucks. I was so stoked for this and recent events sure do play a factor, but I am also so played out by Fox's B.S. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what they were hoping for so they can churn out another turd Wolverine movie with Uwe Boll or some other ass-wipe to direct it.

I think this site needs to feature more about foreign and older flicks.

I'm sick of hearing people obsess over directors like Aronofsky. I feel maybe if people broadened there horizons a bit more we wouldn't get so excited over half assed movies like the black swan and people would have higher standards for what we spend our money on at the box office.

I recommend anyone to watch the Dogme 95 flicks from Denmark or even the Nicholas winding Refn catalogue. Then you will see why north

great news, whilst i do believe Aronofsky was an apt choice I do want this project to be rife with delays so that it can die a natural death and have the rights go back to marvel. FUCK YOU FOX!!!

Awesome!

I wasn't looking forward to a pretentious comic book film with a boring ambiguous ending. I have no clue why he was hired for this project in the first place. I'm probably alone in this, but I don't care: I've disliked every one of Aronofsky's films, even Black Swan(which I did think was his best) to an extent. I wish this guy and David Lynch would just stop making films for the general public.

Total BS

Aronofsky: "Seriously? Japan's radioactive? Shiiiiiiiiit. Erm, my family is what's most important, I don't think I can go to that radioactive earthquake zone for a year."

Well there goes one of my most anticipated upcoming movies. I knew it was too good to be true. Should have expected something like this from the beginning, guess I was being a naive fan. I get the fact that he wants to be with his family, but stop teasing us with stuff you're not going to stick to, Darren. Now no matter who takes the project and how it turns out, I'll always have that nagging "What if Darren didn't drop out, wouldn't have this and that been a lot cooler".

Sad, but expected

Like most, I had hopes for this being an awesome flick. But after the Robocop reboot falling on it's ass, I can't say I am surprised. In fact, if he hadn't ducked out now on a family issue, Arnofsky probably would have left mid production later. Still sucks though.

A sad day

Terrible news, one hell of a unique opportunity down the drain. Thing with Aronofsky is he just gets the best out of the actors. He had a spectacular rapport with Jackman in the Fountain. He tells his stories with depth and enchantment and makes you feel them. This sucks. I really hope for Fox's sake they didn't cause this by restricting his creative freedom...

Geez Aranofsky's kid owes us, his birth was responsible for us not getting the Darren directed episode of Lost and now he's fucking up the Wolverine sequel. Poor X-Men, now is the time for Disney/Marvel to use some of that studio magic to rescue the X-Men from their horrid FOX captors.

I was sooo excited for the potential of both Wolverine in the hands of a director with real class, and Aranofsky getting out of his safety bubble and trying something totally different.

The real bummer is that Fox will rush this through instead of replacing Darren with someone of equal talent.

*sigh, more bad news on an already shitty day

Yeah, this is a pretty big blow. He was my number one reason to this, really the only reason I was interested. I am curious to know how they will top this. If they can't find a director as bold as Aranofsky, I fear that the film will always be compared to the film that he could have produced.

While this really sucks, an Aronofsky Wolverine movie could've gone either way. It's still a Fox production after all.

Now they should make way for an up and coming director like Duncan Jones or Neil Blomkamp to direct, though I assume they both have their own projects going.

Oh well..

While I really like DAs directng, and would've probably really enjoyed his vision of Wolvie, I am not that disheartened to learn this. Fox would've probably screwed it up anyway, and (like most of you) think this is the real reason why he's jumped ship.
On the other hand, I do hope they don't employ some hack - ahem, RATNER - to ruin yet another attempt at giving us a decent Wolverine movie.. Fans must be crying out for a Nolan right now!!

Quick Question....

Can't fault a man for wanting to be with his family.

BUT I am curious...do directors sign a binding contract? I've always wondered how that works, and how directors, talent, etc. are able to walk away from a work project (something the vast majority of us do not have the luxury of doing). Would seem like some sort of contract or agreement would have to be signed between a studio and the director, but I have no idea.

I was looking forward to them milking Wolverine this time. Oh, well, though. GET RATNER ON THE PHONE, ROTHMAN!

I can understand that the man is going through some issues but that excuse just feels like a load of bull. It reminds me of when Matthew Vaughn left X3 because he "didn't want to move his family". Sounds more like Aronofsky and Vaughn wanted to make GOOD movies and Fox is totally against that idea. There is no hope left for this movie.

I say go with shelving the project to. Unless Fox is able to find someone else who will make The Wolverine HIS movie. The movie fans (and everybody else, Wolverine included) deserve and not another dumbed down, wussy Wolverine movie with cgi claws and no blood!

Frakkin' Hell

Darren would have made a very interesting WOLVERINE - maybe an Oscar-worthy action flick.

However, I nominate Edward Zwick to replace him as Zwick has already worked in Japanese mythology and could bring the same kind of epic scope Aronofsky would have added.

Hmm..

what i fear most is the director who will replace him. I was hoping Jackman would be the guy to go from this film, as he is entirely one foot to tall to play Wolvy, oh also he's too metrosexual to play the gritty little runt.

But thats hollywood for ya.

More abt Japan in crisis than his family...

I suppose he got scared of the current state of Japan,Tsunami and Nuclear Plants blowing up,than actually Darren wanting to be with his family,he got scared, the Family thing is just an excuse!I mean a rich guy like him can always make multiple visits whenever he feels like it....lol! Anyways I believe WOlverine should better wait for Zack Snyder!Truly!

This is sad, but you can't blame the guy. Regardless of how epic this would have been, it must go forward. Apparently the script is great so everything is on Fox to replace Aronofsky. It would be cool if he gave the project to someone else, instead of throwing it in the air.

Well...shit. I can't imagine that even if they do move "aggressively" Japan will be ready for at least a few more months. I know parts of it weren't so terribly affected. But still.

Here's hoping either Aronofsky gets another shot at this down the road, as he's been developing it for some time, or he comes up soon with another little movie to make closer to home.

If he can't direct it now, I can't imagine Fox waiting for him. I do agree with Duncan Jones taking over as the next best thing. I also think he could do better action than Aronofsky and elevate his reputation with this.

If I had to pick a director at the top of my head to replace him and who I feel could do The Wolverine justice, I would pick Duncan Jones.

Moon was excellent and The Source Code is getting great reviews and looks really good.

Very sad news. Aronofsky would have made a perfect Wolverine movie. Whoever Fox gets to replace him won't be as good, so hopefully they do get someone who is capable of doing Wolverine right and giving him justice.

At least we still have X-Men: First Class coming out to satisfy us X-Men fans.

While I'm disappointed to see him go, this does open up the opportunity for someone like Duncan Jones to move into the director's chair.

I was actually thinking Duncan Jones would be a good replacement, but thought it would be a little too soon to already be naming replacements.

F*ck all.

I love Darren but I'm mad at him right now - for Wolverine and the countless other projects he attaches to and then bails.

Although I respect his decision, I don't believe the reason for one minute. Well they all said that was script was good, so just find a damn director who won't screw it up. And certainly NOT Brett Ratner!!!

Definitely the saddest movie news of all time, but I kind of knew this would happen from the start...just too good to be true. I hope he is able to work out his divorce and custody issues. That's some rough shit to go through for sure, so I get why he had to back out.

The problem is, Fox had a blessing in disguise with Aronofsky. And they're not competent or patient enough to find a director of equal stature or talent. So go ahead and hire McG or D.J. Caruso, Fox. Just get it over with.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! This could've been awesome if all the stars were aligned, but this is FOX we're talking about. God knows how much they bullied Aronofsky into their bullshit vision, until he couldn't take it anymore. Sigh...

Over Rated

I really don't like any of his movies, so this is good news. I will have to wait to see who they bring in, then maybe I'll be interested in this project.

Genuinely sad.

And while there are exceptions to the rule, generally studios will replace directors with inferior ones who want the opportunity. What attracted me to this film was the prospect of a director who was unashamed of being artistic, but never at the expense of the narrative, taking control of a comic flick that had great potential. Now who will we get? Shawn Levy?

Should we start a write-in campaign for Chris Cunningham?
