Darren Aronofsky practically set to direct Wolverine 2, filming planned to begin in March

10.18.2010

"Practically" set to direct? I know, I know... I wish the trades would simply just report when the signature is actually on the damn dotted line, but so it goes.

According to Deadline, the latest on the WOLVERINE 2 front is that Darren Aronofsky's deal to direct the Fox mutant sequel "is close enough that discussion has turned to shooting the sound stage portions of the film in New York so the filmmaker and Hugh Jackman don't have to inconvenience their families."

It's also being said that a March production start date is being planned so that Aronofsky can have ample time to open BLACK SWAN and attend to any potential awards obligations that film might bring. (Remember also that SWAN is a Fox Searchlight release, so the studio will do all it can to help one property while properly getting things in line for another.) Once shooting of the New York scenes is complete, production is then expected to move to Japan to finish the bulk of the film.

Baring any unforeseen problems, it looks like this will actually happen. We'll bring you more as it comes.
Extra Tidbit: Are you good with an Aronofsky WOLVERINE? Or would you have preferred ROBOCOP? SUPERMAN? Is this the "right" mainstream property for the filmmaker?

The first Wolverine was a bit of a mess. Hugh Jackman makes it watchable but despite a cool opening sequence the direction of the film was limp.

This is a move in the right direction, looking forward to a bad ass well visualized Wolverine story on screen. Sweet.

Considering all the things that went wrong with the first movie, Aronofsky is the best deal Fox can get right now for this movie.. But a good director is no guarantee with Fox involved.. the studio "black hand" always ruin everything, so expect a miracle for this flick..

This confuses my pre viewing judgement.

Take my disapointment of the first one with my love of the character of [link] I am a confused man. I remain seriously hopeful.

that "Practically" guarantees a bloody epic epicness of a superhero film. He wouldnt sign on without a certain level of control.

It boggles my mind why people disagree with this. This is how it's supposed to work. Aronofsky is a gifted filmmaker with depth and we all know Wolverine is really a tragic character, and Darren can bring that real emotion alive. Studios are finally doing something right.

Wolverine 2 screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie

My first thought was WTF but McQuarrie is a very decent writer. The combination Aronofsky/McQuarrie might just work

Please be better than the last one!!

I am not a big fan of aronofskys (I love fountain but didnt like requiem and wrestler...cant wait for black swan) i just hope that fox has their shit together when doing this one i like many others cant wait to see hugh play this character again and again but the last one concetrated more on introducing characters for the sequels and xmen spin offs and i hope this concentrates on the actual journey of wolverine and if they do aything i want danny houston back as stryker cos that man was a

This sounds too good to be true. It may end up being epically mediocre.

For some reason with him attatched, I feel that the vibe of this is going to be somewhat like Watchmen. Which is a GREAT thing.

Come the premiere and it's a dud, rant all you want but Aranofsky deserves respect and everyone needs to shut the fuck up and not doubt him.
I just hope they don't call it Wolverine 2, this should be a fresh start for Wolvie.

Wait a sec...

...so they said the reason the studio didn't pick Aronofsky for Superman was because of his lengthy pre-production work (which they couldn't afford), yet after only a few weeks of talks directing Wolverine, he'll be ready to shoot by March? The fuck?

I'm thinkin' the first rumor of him doin' Supes had to have been bullshit, or atleast the reasoning behind why he didn't do it.

Anyway, I hope Aronofsky is aware of what an uphill battle he's gonna have making ppl give a shit about this

Whereas an Aranofsky Robocop would've been infinitely more interesting to me than an Aranofsky Wolverine or Superman, I'll be intrigued to see if a talented bloke like him can actually wrestle a decent Wolverine flick out of Fox. The guy clearly likes a challenge.

I agree. It will be a giant cock tease like the last one, until the studio steps in and destroys it like the last...

For some reason I just can't get excited about this. Maybe because I don't really give a shit about Wolverine. Aranofsky shoulda stuck with Robocop.
