Darren Aronofsky will not be directing the Red Sparrow adaptation for Fox

Jan. 17, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

Back in August we brought you word that Darren Aronofsky was interested in directing an adaption of the Jason Matthews novel Red Sparrow, but unfortunately the director is no longer attached to the film. THR is reporting Aronofsky has moved on from the adaptation, and is currently on the hunt for a new project. THR also says Fox still has high hopes for the film, and is looking for a screenwriter for RED SPARROW.

Book synopsis from Amazon:

In present-day Russia, ruled by blue-eyed, unblinking President Vladimir Putin, Russian intelligence officer Dominika Egorova struggles to survive in the post-Soviet intelligence jungle. Ordered against her will to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress, Dominika is assigned to operate against Nathaniel Nash, a young CIA officer who handles the Agency’s most important Russian mole.

As the action careens between Russia, Finland, Greece, Italy, and the United States, Dominika and Nate soon collide in a duel of wills, tradecraft, and—inevitably—forbidden passion that threatens not just their lives but those of others as well. As secret allegiances are made and broken, Dominika and Nate’s game reaches a deadly crossroads. Soon one of them begins a dangerous double existence in a life-and-death operation that consumes intelligence agencies from Moscow to Washington, DC.

I would have loved to see a spy thriller directed by Darren Aronofsky, but if I'm being honest, I'd watch just about anything created by him. Hell, I'd even give an Aronofsky directed episode of Glee a shot. He is searching for a new project though, and I'm very excited to find out what his follow-up to NOAH will be.

Darren Aronofsky's NOAH (now with more Nick Nolte!) starring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Winstone, and Kevin Durand will be released into theaters on March 28th, 2014.

This guy

Darren Aronofsky drops out of more films than anyone else in Hollywood. Two come to mind in the last two years: RoboCop and Wolverine.

That synopsis sounds excellent; a shame Aronofsky had to pass on it. I know this sounds nuts, but an Aronofsky musical might have potential to be incredible.
