Darren Aronofsky's Wolverine film will officially be called...

Nov. 15, 2010by: George Merchan

...THE WOLVERINE.

Simple and cool. Amazing what a 'the' can do!

Thanks to HitFix for uncovering the title tidbit. The information was revealed in a recent interview conducted between the site and director Darren Aronofsky for the filmmaker's upcoming BLACK SWAN. There had never been word before on what the follow-up to last year's X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE would be called, but now we know officially.

It's also become official that THE WOLVERINE will not be a sequel to Gavin Hood's ORIGINS film, with Aronofsky calling it a "one-off". As we've known, the story - from a script by Christopher McQuarrie (THE TOURIST) - will follow the Chris Claremont/Frank Miller 1980s mini-series which finds Logan venturing off to Japan.

Now, the more distance this film has from Hood's much-derided entry, the better I say. However, this could also be seen as Aronofsky marking a clear distinction between his work and that of the other films in the X-MEN franchise (much like Matthew Vaughn's X-MEN: FIRST CLASS has), which may prove interesting for the character after all is said and done.

THE WOLVERINE is expected to begin production in New York this March.

Hard to believe this is actually happening with Aronofsky at the helm. Dream come true. It's like if PT Anderson were to direct a Justice League movie. (Think about it. Who else could juggle that many characters and plotlines and still have it be interesting and intelligently done.) Anyway, the title isn't amazing but it'll do just fine. Same way I feel about The Dark Knight Rises.

It's nice that he doesn't want this movie to be considered a sequel. Good luck getting that past the marketing dept though.

The Wolverine... I like it. I thought for sure it was gonna simply be called Wolverine, or Weapon X, or Canucklehead.

This movie will be awesome with Aronofsky at the helm, but I hate the studio BS that says "this isn't officially a sequel". I can understand the desire to distance the movie from Origins, but at the end of the day this is still Wolerine 2, no matter what you call it (especially with the same actor). I'm hoping this will be the best X-men movie since X2, and Clint Mansell delivers and epic score.

The simpler the better.

This will most probably be better than the first one.

I don't think he's trying reboot it. It seems like he's just trying to make a sequel that stands on it's own two feet rather than requiring that you see the others to enjoy it. Kinda like how you can watch any Indy movie without really needing to see the one before or after.

Well I will still think of this movie as a sequel unless it redoes the orgin story but heres the thing this title isnt really indicating its not a sequel because if anyone remembers the story Kayla told Logan in Orgins was about "The Wolverine" and they refer to the Wolverine in that story as "The Wolverine" so wouldnt people just think the title would come from that story and still think of it as a sequel?

I'm just curious...
What if Jackman isn't asked to come back as Wolverine since they are trying to get away from other X-Men storylines? I mean he IS Wolverine, but will there be a day when someone else will wear the claws and sideburns?
I'm just throwing that question out there.

Since Jackman is also somewhat of a producer he'll be sticking around as Wolverine for as long as he can, and that's a very good thing. The man is passionate about the character and deserves to play Logan every chance he gets. Plus, he's a very bankable name, I doubt studios would want to change having him on their marketing material.

I still can't believe Aronofsky's directing this. I can only imagine this is about 100 times better than Origins if he's doing this. Also, glad to hear it's not a sequel. Maybe that means that it will be a fresh film with a new look. I am really hoping this does not suck.

I just use the HULK:THE INCREDIBLE HULK or GHOST RIDER: GHOST RIDER 2 formula. It's not a sequel but under the flesh it really is. Just squint a little bit, bend some continuity errors and THE WOLVERINE's a sequel once again.

Love the title, and I love the fact that Aronofsky is making a film that stands on its own.

The first Wolverine movie was a waste of time that completely missed the mark, and the quicker it is forgotten the better. The worst part about Origins is that it only existed to inflate the X-Men balloon more. It was never just a Wolverine story.

Again, what's this business about no sequels? The first one set up the Japan story at the end! They don't have to bring back any characters from the first one, but they shouldn't just void the whole movie. The studios really do have sequel phobia lately.

Badassness.

I always hoped the third Batman would be called "The Batman", but hey, I got my wish on an equal level. This is such good news, with Darren on board and all, that I still can't believe it's really happening. Lets hope he does for Wolverine what Nolan did for Batman. Now THIS is the Wolverine flick we've all been waiting for! Or at least lets hope it is.

I like the title alot. I have complete faith in "The Wolverine" because of how great The Fountain was.

This name also is alot better than "The Dark Knight Rises".

This is looking like the Wolvie movie we all deserve. Origins would have been better if they had just stuck with the Sabretooth/Wolvie arc. I thought Schreiber did a good job as Sabretooth. I'm thinking this new Wolverine movie will be one of the greats.

Can't Wait!!

I love Bryan singers X men he really incorparated the powers, he made the characters believable and there was some awesome action scenes. The came Ratner and he took a massive shit right on themost important part of the series then the fuck nut Gavin hood fucking destroyed it with Origins I have no desire to see what Vaughn is doing X men first class but this is sounding more and more interesting i hope Darren can bring his indie routes to this movie but be more commercial than he normally is

Can't really say I'm looking forward to this. All the X-Men films have sucked balls so far. Let's just say I'm indifferent. But miracles have occurred before, and The Wrestler was very well done.

Aronofsky could puke on a pile of shit and it would be more interesting than Origins: Wolverine

I really love every film he's ever been involved with (yes, even Below), and I can't freaking wait for this. I really think he's going to blow us all away with this one.

Oh, and I dig the title too.

I think Aronofsky can pull off the impossible: He can make Wolverine an interesting character with a personality. I'm open to see if this ends up being fantastic or just a slight notch about the craptacular first movie.

Ok, Tell me i'm not dreaming...We got ourselves a bitchin' director, A bad-ass character AND a great actor who portrays him & a storyline that is dripping w/ fucking awesome!...and a simple, cool title to boot.

Yeah Hollywood, now THIS is how you get shit going that a fanboy likes!
