David Cronenberg talks influencing Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot

02.13.2015

The Fantastic Four David Cronenberg

Last month director Josh Trank and screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg shared a few new details on the THE FANTASTIC FOUR, and one of the things that raised a few eyebrows was Trank's comment about taking a "Cronenberg-ian" approach to the comic book movie. Trank specifically mentioned that David Cronenberg's THE FLY and SCANNERS were big influences on the look of the film, and he also said he is a huge fan of the director.

David Cronenberg has been out promoting his latest movie MAPS TO THE STARS, and earlier today Collider asked Cronenberg to share his thoughts on Josh Trank drawing inspiration from his films for THE FANTASTIC FOUR.

It’s fine. Once you’ve contributed your voice to the cinematic conversation, it’s out there and it’s up for grabs, absolutely. So I don’t complain. In fact, I take it as a compliment.

Cronenberg knows THE FANTASTIC FOUR isn't the first movie inspired by his work, and he goes on to say Ridley Scott's ALIEN ripped off a few things from his parasite film SHIVERS.

As far back as Alien, for example, which totally ripped off things from my movie Shivers - Shivers featured a parasite that lives in your body, bursts out of your chests, jumps onto your face, and jumps down your mouth, and suddenly you see this in a studio film, which was hugely successful, Alien. The writer of the script, Dan O’Bannon, had seen Shivers, we know that he had seen my movie and, shall we say, appropriated it. So this is not new stuff for me.

The director also applauded Josh Trank for admitting his film will be Cronenberg-esque.

When you come up with something original and it really strikes a chord in people, it’s going to imitated, it’s going to be appropriated, and it’s actually kind of nice when someone just flat out admits it. That’s actually pretty good. Not everybody does.

I have a feeling THE FANTASTIC FOUR is going to be very polarizing movie among both critics and fans of the comic books. I'm still not sure what to expect from the reboot, and I have no clue how it will perform at the box office, however I am very eager to check out Josh Trank's new film.

David Cronenberg's MAPS TO THE STARS (you can read Chris Bumbray's review here) will be released in theaters, On Demand and on iTunes February 27, 2015, and THE FANTASTIC FOUR opens on August 7, 2015.

Finally saw the trailer last night in the theater

It's so generic, Nolan BS.
The scope is so limited. Nothing fantastic. Grounded for sure. No lift-offs for these Four.

This was a very interesting read. I could definitely see some Cronenberg influence in the trailer. Fantastic Four is one of my most anticipated movies of the summer. I still can't believe there's so many haters for this project. If the exact same trailer were made by Disney, everyone would have loved it. There's a lot of hypocrites on this site.

Thats B.S. and you know it. I'm sure plenty of us haters can explain why we want this film to fail. The whole "if it was made by Marvel" arguement is stupid. Cuz if it was made by Marvel, it wouldn't look like this film. They would have stuck as closely to the source material than this film has shown us. Its fine if you can't wait for this movie, respect, but know what your talking about before calling people hypocrites

Hated by "comic fans" who don't read comics.

What I find hilarious is how much this looks as true to the source as the singer xmen movies yet on this site they are beloved, think how many race changes comic book character have had in films lately and then all these little fanboys start crying about this! Think how awfully adapted most of the xmen characters have been done yet that gets praised. I like yourself look forward to this pure because we love cinema and thins looks good. Haters

I could see Cronenberg's influence all over the trailer. Josh Trank is a genius, I'm glad a great director like him is directing a superhero movie.

I will bet money it doesn't resemble Fantastic Four or any decent Cronenberg film.

There's no one more smug than someone justified in being smug. I'd go around point out the films that were inspired by me too, if I had made as many wildly original films as Cronenberg

"Shivers featured a parasite that lives in your body, bursts out of your chests, jumps onto your face, and jumps down your mouth"

I don't recall the 'Shivers' parasite bursting out of anyone's chest. It entered its human hosts through bodily orifices, didn't it? If Cronenberg's suggesting that 'Alien' ripped off that idea from him, he needs to acknowledge that he ripped that idea off from elsewhere considering that he, um, didn't actually invent the concept. What is with Cronenberg turning

'Foetustic Four' looks like cack.

It must be his aloofness and constant ass kissing that makes him think he can imply Alien ripped him off. I used to like him, but he comes off as a huge dick anymore.

I'm really surprised how much hate this movie gets sometimes. I would expect that much vitriol toward another douche-tacular Michael Bay "film." Listen, I'm not going to try to be the voice of reason here but I applaud them for openly acknowledging their inspirations. They are just trying something new considering those two last FF movies were pure garbage. "Can you be prettier when you cry?" Actual direction cue from visionary filmmaker Tim Story to Jessica Alba. Honestly, I'd rather get

Honestly, I'd rather get something completely fresh than a rehash and this is coming from a non-fan. Having low expectations for a flick can be a good thing and there is no shame to say you liked the movie after you've bashed it months prior. I'm playing the waiting game now but I am hoping Trank and co can deliver something really special.

I can see it now the machines they all enter to better themselves causes them to morph and mutate like when the fly got in the machine in The Fly. Reed Richards must of forgot to remove the rubber-band on his wrist, turning him into Mr. Fantastic. Johnny Storm must have a lighter in his pocket, Sue Storm is wearing an invisible retainer, and Ben Grimm had a rock stuck in his shoe. So much more clever than getting powers from space. Not. Sorry this movie still pisses me off, this is not a FF4

Not gonna lie, that's a pretty spot-on theory.

It'll be an entertaining and visually spectacular film....

It just won't be a Fantastic Four movie. I can live with that, but don't expect me to pay $30 to take my kid to see it in IMAX or 4 return trips like The Avengers. I like Trask and am sure people who see it will enjoy it, I just don't think it will make big money. And if it flops (or just makes above break-even money), it'll be a big deal coming on the heels of the Marvel films killing it at the theater. Just ask Andrew Garfield.....

I dont think much about the trailer was cliche as it was more an incoherent mess that people were jokingly mistaking for interstellar 2.

Sounds like he has the late Dan O'Bannon's picture as a target for his dart practice.

To be fair, the guy was kind of a hack. Alien's cult status tests almost entirely on Ridley Scott's shoulders, by elevating a generic script and altering most of the characters. Most of O'Brian's successful film were successful in spite of his screenplay
