David Duchovny says X-Files 3 is currently being written

Update: Latino Review is saying something got lost in translation, and there is no script confirmed for the project as of yet. But the point still stands about whether or not there’s interest in this I guess.

So a year ago, we had word that Mulder and Scully would be down for another X-FILES movie, should one choose to exist, but that wasn’t exactly hard proof of it happening. Duchovny said back then 2012 was a “natural” time for the movie to come out, though I’m not sure if that’s a reference to the release timeline of the other films or the impending apocalypse.

But now things are actually moving along, as Duchovny recently gave French magazine TVMag the heads up that the project is in the works.

“It is being written. One awaits just the green light from Fox, a little disappointed from the relatively poor reception of the second film. The error comes, in my opinion, that the authors strayed too far from the roots of the series. Moreover, the film was released in the summer. The third will be much closer to what the public expects, with government conspiracies, etc.”

Yes, it’s true, critics and audiences and fans alike generally hated the second film, so hopefully the third installment does go back to the “roots” as Duchovny requests. You would think he’d be satisfied starring in a show where the main plot is him having sex with hot girls all the time, but perhaps he’s longing for his former glory days as a geek icon.

I never got into the X-Files myself, as I was too young at the time for it, and trying to watch it now is an exhausting prospect with a million seasons to get through, so I’ll ask you fans out there to comment on this. Why was the second film so shitty? Are you still interested in the series continuing in this way, or have you put it behind you at this point?
