David Fincher is eyeing Brad Pitt for a role in 20,000 Leagues

Oct. 18, 2012by:

David Fincher is looking at long-time pal and collaborator, Brad Pitt for his next film.

That's if Disney decides they want to move forward with 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA...

The studio put a three month hold on the project so they can decide if it's something they want to greenlight. We've been hearing about it for awhile now, but there's been nothing other than major stalls. Andrew Kevin Walker (SEVEN) was hired to rewrite the script in 2011.

The shift of discussion has now turned to casting. Fincher wants Pitt for the role of Ned Land for the film, if it gets off the ground. Pitt's reps said that he isn't committed to anything right now, and is still looking into roles to take in 2013. They didn't say no to the rumor though.

Here is a synopsis for Jules Verne's 1870s novel:"Sent to investigate mysterious encounters that are disrupting international shipping, Professor Aronnax, his servant Conseil, and disgruntled harpooner Ned Land are captured when their frigate is sunk during an encounter with the "monster." The submarine Nautilus and its eccentric Captain Nemo afford the professor and his companions endless fascination and danger as they're swept along on a yearlong undersea voyage."

Is Pitt a good cast for Land?

Not buying it

It's going to be really hard for Disney to outdo their 1954 20,000 Leagues. Mason? Douglas? Forget it. I have faith in David Fincher, but I don't see him as a perfect fit for a movie like this (Lord, who would be?). Any way, I'll be curious to see what they can come up with. Brad Pitt, though? No.

I haven't seen the old Douglas/Mason movie in AGES, but I'm still trying to figure out why everyone's hating on you for it. Maybe because you don't like Pitt for Ned Land? I just remember good things about that movie, though I was very young.

Disney has to be retarded

David Fincher wants to make a movie with his buddy Brad Pitt and you're debating it?

Alright, maybe they are just plain dumb. I mean if they keep debating this and don't re-release The Avengers in theatres... they are truly retarded from a business point of view. Like seriously, they're giving a 'we'll think about it' to this while they were like 'Lone Ranger? GREEN LIGHT GO GO GO' lol

I'd argue they weren't "clawing" for the first one, either. But once we started seeing footage, that all changed.

I think it's still coming, the two sequels are being written or have been finished being written and are being tweaked and I heard they're planning to film them back-to-back. Dragon Tattoo was decent I mean but, I don't exactly hear anyone demanding/craving to see the next two. I'll watch them, but meh... not something I'm clawing for

Please let this movie happen. Remember, while full of adventure and wonder...20,000 Leagues is very dark in its subject matter. The ocean a deep, terrifying place. Nemo a civilization-loathing anarchist. I get a free movie in my head just thinking what Fincher would do with this material.

But who to play Nemo? Remember, Nemo is a Prince of the Indian Raj. Knowing Fincher he'll aim for an Indian actor to play him. Ben Kingsley? Naveen Andrews? Or does Fincher give a big crossover

The book sucks..

Just finished reading the book and was it ever a snoozer. I'm pretty sure that any screenplay can be adapted from it to be a lot better. The book reads partly like a half-ass kidnapping story and partly like a marine biology textbook (yawn).

Personally, I see Pitt as Pierre Aronnax, the kidnappee of the story, more than either Nemo or Ned Land.

With minimal screwing about by the studio this could be an amazing film - having Pitt and Fincher together is generally a good sign.
