David Goyer addresses the connections between Man of Steel and other DC heroes

06.12.2013

MAN OF STEEL held a red carpet premiere in New York City and the media was out in full force to speak with the cast and crew about the film and what is in the future for Superman and the other DC heroes. While we now know that a sequel to MAN OF STEEL is a definite for director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David Goyer. As rumors continue to swirl about the JUSTICE LEAGUE film and other possible DC superhero movies, the questions had to be asked and David Goyer had some answers.

From the LexCorp building in the MAN OF STEEL trailer to the Wayne Enterprises logo on a satellite that General Zod destroys, there are countless hints to the DC Universe. Goyer also indicated we will have a reference to S.T.A.R. Labs in the movie, a nod to Cyborg. Cyborg is a member of the Teen Tians and in the New 52 reboot of the DC storylines he is a founding member of the Justice League.

Goyer broke down what all this means when asked by MTV at the premiere of MAN OF STEEL:

"THE DARK KNIGHT films do not exist in the same universe. Zack [Snyder] has gone on record. The fact that we have Wayne Industries on the satellite, Bruce Wayne exists in this universe. Lex Luthor exists in this universe. Other metahumans do exist in this universe, so the hope is, depending on how the film does, that we'll be able to roll into some other films."

Goyer also said he has not been asked to write JUSTICE LEAGUE, but if asked he "wouldn't say no". I would have no problem with him getting involved with the overall DC films since you cannot argue the quality of THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy as compared to older DC movies. Whether or not MAN OF STEEL lives up to that quality remains to be seen.

MAN OF STEEL opens this Friday, June 14th.

Great writer, just don't ask him to direct, but I think everyone knows that about Goyer. He's so talented with his writing. When it comes to the Flash, I wouldn't mind Wally West over Barry Allen, but that's just me.

If everyone's in a different universe, why don't they pass by the Marvel so they can take notes on how to successfully merge characters to a billion dollar mashup?

LOL....I really don't think they need to 'take notes' on how to 'merge characters' these guys know what they are doing and there are soo soo many GREAT STORIES about these characters out there and have been for so long that they can take bits and pieces of all sorts of things that they want or not and make an awesome story.....but no they surely don't need to follow what Marvel did with the Avengers at all...that was very by the book, make each characters vanilla story and go about

That was a difficult movie to make and they knocked it out of the park....dude..they can make a JLA movie all on their own...they don't need no stinking marvel mang

I love all these little references to other heroes ...but please ...give us a biggie. You don't go from no superheroes to loads that quickly - some reference (quip by someone) ...like...it's not the first time a super powered fight has broken out in the USA might help (referencing the Green Lantern battle at the end of the Reynolds’s movie... perhaps). I like the reference used in the animated Superman series when Martha says to Clark he should avoid being compared to "that nut in Gotham

If something like that showed up in MoS that would be awesome. Or perhaps someone holding a Daily Planet newspaper with a headline referencing the recent destruction in Starling City… if they want to reference lower tier heroes.

Bring it on

I can't wait to check this out on Friday morning. Arrow's recent tweet about it has me more pumped too. After seeing it, then ill worry about more.

I really hope this paves the way for a larger DC universe. Man of Steel wasn't perfect, but it was a good, solid step in the right direction. I also like that the Wayne Enterprises logo uses the same design as the Nolanverse one, yet there are no explicit connections so we could still have a different Batman.

I would just like to have some references for Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Flash, or Batman. At least a big nod for one of the other Justice League members. Like the same way Iron Man 1 had the Captain America shield in it. I want something more than just a simple Easter egg.

Maybe a Star (Starling) City for Green Arrow reference? I quite enjoy the new Arrow series.

Love Arrow. It's really a great take on the character.

Wait, if Wayne Satellite and Bruce Wayne exist in this universe, how can Batman not exist in this universe?

He's talking about the Chris Nolan film series, not necessarily the Batman character.

He didn't say Batman doesn't exist in this universe, he said the Nolan Dark Knight version of Batman doesn't exist.

Maybe Batman does exist, but he instead referenced him by saying Bruce Wayne exists instead of Batman exists. He just assumes that Bruce Wayne and Batman are the same thing being referenced.

Yeah, you three are right on point. Maybe we might get a glimpse of Gotham City's reference too.

How about neither? I'd rather have a good writer and director and Goyer can't do either one.

I think he's a solid writer especially when collaborating with a good director but to each their own.

I'm fine with Goyer helping out on the script as long as he has someone to hold his hand a little. I think he brings a pretty good knowledge of DC heroes to the table but he needs a better storyteller to guide him. I'm a little worried with all the average reviews rolling in. Can't wait to read some reviews here tho!!
