David Goyer will neither confirm nor deny Lex Luthor's presence in Man of Steel

Mar. 26, 2013by:

We haven't heard many rumblings about Lex Luthor appearing in either MAN OF STEEL or the future JUSTICE LEAGUE movie. After the fan outcry against SUPERMAN RETURNS, it seems that Zack Snyder and David S. Goyer are going for something a little different for the reboot of the classic DC icon. Much like Christopher Nolan's BATMAN BEGINS, MAN OF STEEL is trotting out a different villain than the main antagonist of Luthor. While General Zod is a bit higher on the food chain than Ra's Al Ghul, he is still no Lex Luthor.

While Luthor may not be the primary villain in MAN OF STEEL, Goyer is not denying that he makes an appearance in the new movie. In a recent interview with I Am Rogue, Goyer was directly asked about why Luthor was cut from the MAN OF STEEL screenplay to which the screenwriter had this to say.

I dont think anyone has ever confirmed that we havent included him.

Interesting. So, I would think this either means that Luthor is referred to off screen as a presence in the new DC Cinematic Universe or maybe makes a cameo appearance. Either way, I hope we get some Lex. The bald-headed supervillain is the perfect antithesis of Superman. If Gpyer and Snyder want their new film to be about the fear the world holds for this alien who himself is struggling to find his place in our world, Luthor is the embodiment of that fear and xenophobia.

MAN OF STEEL opens everywhere on June 14, 2013, hopefully with Lex in tow.

Luther should always be there, but that doesn't mean he should be the primary villain. At least not for a while.

Hope not

They shouldn't put him in until they decide how they want to end this series. I've had enough of Lex Luthor. Time to bring in some good villains for Superman that haven't had a chance yet. Let's see Brainiac, Metallo or Bizarro. This movie looks so epic, I just don't want to see more of the same.

That Trailer

Granted I am prone to hyperbole, but I have to say that the second Man of Steel trailer is one of the best I've ever seen. Everything gels so well; I am so pumped for it, and it's nice to see a movie that makes you MORE excited the more you hear about it (the Wolverine, I'm looking at you). Usually its the opposite.

As for the news, sure why not! As long as it is only an introduction in order to lay the groundwork for future films.

Meh

I never liked how Lex has been portrayed in the movies anyways...Always with the stupid land schemes..and don't even get me started on Nuclear Man.

Could be good, I want to see Doomsday that would be awesome, but would obviously take a couple of movies to set it up.

I love Lex Luthor...

...but I think there needs to be a fresh take on him we haven't seen before. It's a pipe dream for certain, but I'd give my left nut to have somebody like Daniel Day-Lewis tackle that character.

I posted this a while back to another story...saying that it would be unthinkable to not have someone who is essentially Mr Metropolis before Supes show up in this...unless this world has no Lex. You can't just introduce him in a Man of Steel 2 without...at least...a passing reference that this guy exists. It is my so far biggest gripe with Amazing Spider-Man 2that Harry is apparently a long lost friend of Peteryet no reference of this was made when his dads name was mentioned in the first

It is my so far biggest gripe with Amazing Spider-Man 2that Harry is apparently a long lost friend of Peteryet no reference of this was made when his dads name was mentioned in the first movie on several occasions in the presence of Peter. I even said that if there's only a few seconds of Lex in MoS than they should darn well copy the scene right out of the Superman Doomsday animated movie where you see the back of Lex and the cracking off his office windows due to the shockwaves reverberating from the punch up between Superman and Doomsday...in addition to a Lex Corp building shot preceding that...just so the uninitiated can have it spelled out for them.

It seems like they're going to do to Lex what Sony/Columbia/Marvel did with Norman Osbourne in Amazing Spider-Man. That's not such a bad idea, Batman Begins didn't have the Joker and when we finally got him in Dark Knight it was better than I had hoped. Is it too early to start a "Bryan Cranston for Lex Luthor" campaign? More than anything I just want this movie to be good, I'm definitely not feeling the retelling of the origin story but if that's what it takes to get butts in the seats so that

I'd rather Cranston be the new Detecive Gordon in the Batman films.

Lex Luthor bores me to death as a villain, especially when he has been used in 4 freaking movies already. Considering the direction they want Man of Steel to connect to the Justice League, he just seems out of place.

Lex Luthor is going to have to figure in the series sooner or later. I sincerely hope they take a leaf out of the DCAU's book, because I absolutely love how Lex Luthor (as voiced by Clancy Brown) was portrayed in those shows. He was arrogant up the yazoo, but also cunning, ruthless and not an over-the-top showboater as most incarnations of the character have been. It would be nice to see Lex Luthor's running for presidency be a plot point in a future Superman flick.

He has to be there

In some capacity at least, and would lead in perfectly for what I wanted to see in Man of Steel 2, which could introduce us to Kryptonite, Metallo, and maybe even Kara Zor-El (if they really want to build the DC universe) i can not wait for this movie

It would be cool to see Lex in this as a regular guy, but then certain events happen to him that leads him to being the man we all know. If we have learned anything from the Dark Knight films, it's to save your better villains for the sequels, which is what I think Man of Steel will do in this case.

As for who should play him I have no idea. I could have seen Mark Strong doing a great job, but obviously it will never happen because of Green Lantern.
