Death Race 3 currently filming

Dec. 15, 2011by: Alex Riviello

DEATH RACE 2 was perhaps better than people expected from a DTV followup to a mediocre remake, and Universal's 1440 Entertainment is hard at work on another one. They're currently down in South Africa shooting the film with Luke Goss (DEATH RACE 2), Danny Trejo and Ving Rhames. Familiar faces to the series include Fred Koehler, Robin Shou, and Tanit Phoenix, and joining the series will be Dougray Scott )(MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II”) and Hlubi Mboya (HOW TO STEAL 2 MILLION).

“Universal’s first two DEATH RACE films have garnered an ardent global following that is eagerly awaiting a new chapter in this riveting saga,” says Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President, Universal 1440 Entertainment. “DEATH RACE 3 will exceed their expectations with even more explosive action, elaborately outfitted cars, inventive weaponry and death-defying stunts that have made the franchise such a huge fan favorite.”

Have to begrudgingly agree- one thing you have to admire about this series is that they love their practical effects. For the most part those are real cars getting smashed to pieces, and we certainly don't see nearly enough of that these days. It's telling when you watch an older flick and your jaw hangs open at some of the car stunts, because you realize that there's actually someone risking their lives for the shot. Not a computer programmer

Anyway here's the synopsis, as contrived as it is- Convicted cop-killer Carl Lucas, aka Frankenstein, is a superstar driver in the brutal prison yard demolition derby known as Death Race. Only one victory away from winning freedom for himself and his pit crew, Lucas is plunged into an all-new competition more vicious than anything he has experienced before. Pitted against his most ruthless adversaries ever, Lucas fights to keep himself and his team alive in a race in South Africa’s infernal Kalahari Desert. With powerful forces at work behind the scenes to ensure his defeat, will Lucas’ determination to win at all costs mean the end of the road for him?

Dougray Scott

Remember when Dougray Scott was cast as Wolverine in the first X-Men movie? But had to drop out to film MI:2 and they cast Hugh Jackman? Do you think he looks back on that now and wonders what a bullet might taste like?

Say what..??

"an ardent global following"??? I'm probably in the low percentage of people who actually -not only watched them both- but actually enjoyed them! I mean.. what's there not to like? Bunch of cars, speed, crashes, explosions, hot mamacitas, blood, gore and a turn-your-brains-off story.

But to imply that there are hordes of fans... that's pushing it if you ask me.

Still I welcome a trilogy.

You might find yourself surprised with some gems in dtv field such as Undisputed II & III, Universal Soldier 3, Blood and Bone... hell, even The Boondock Saints, The Man from Earth, Black Dynamite were pretty much DTV hits

i never said i didn't like DTV movies, i just felt it was weird the main page on joblo had an article on such a title. I do enjoy catching a DTV title now & then.

the first one with Statham

was great, great fun. A huge surprise. Haven't seen the second one, but I've been wary of seeing DTV sequels ever since Smokin' Aces 2...
