Strike Back below!
by: George Merchan Dec. 20, 2009

Maybe this has been done already on another site, I just haven't seen it. But in any case, I thought maybe this would spark some discussion and debate here on our Strike Backs.

Sci-fi blog io9 made up a cool, short little list on who they thought were the Best New Characters of the Decade. Here were their picks (numbered in no particular order):

1) Benjamin Linus (LOST)
2) Thaddeus S. "Rusty" Venture (THE VENTURE BROTHERS)
3) Gaius Baltar (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA)
4) Donna Noble (DOCTOR WHO)
5) Kate Kane/Batwoman (DC Comics)

Being a sci-fi site, io9's picks tend to bend towards that genre. But, I still think the question is a good one fit for discussion. Off the top of my head, it's hard to think back through an entire decade's worth of stuff, but new characters that immediately spring to mind for me are Omar Little and Stringer Bell from HBO's "The Wire", The Bluth Family from Fox's "Arrested Development", and most definitely Col. Hans Landa from Quentin Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS.

Who are your picks? Hit up our Strike Backs below and let us know who you guys think are the Best New Characters of the Decade.

After skimming the entries, I'm surprised Ron Burgandy was not mentioned.

There are obviously others, but his was the first that popped in my head.

Vic Mackey. The best character in the most addictive drama of the decade. Watch one episode and you can sit down and watch about 10 in a row.

Bad lists...
Everybody's lists are terrible. It's like your personal favorite characters, rather than the characters who truly defined the decade and made an impact. In the same way that Rambo defined the 80s, and the T-800 from T2 defined the 90s. How does that equal any of the characters from Inglorius Basterds? It's too new. Or Roger the Alien from American Dad? C'mon now. If anything one of the biggest...

I think it needs to go beyond personal tastes here.

Along with Dexter Morgan I would have to add Arthur aka Trinity from season 4. John Lithgow raised the bar for serial killers everywhere.

It's probably been said many times before, but Heath Ledger's joker was one of the best characters of the decade in my opinion. I agree with the suggestion of Waltz's Hans Landa from Inglourious Basterds as well. And of course, Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow made for a great character.

Donna Noble was the worst character of the decade! As for the Galactica pick, Admiral Adama > Baltar every time. I'd also include Stringer Bell (The Wire) and Jack Sparrow, off the top of my head.
