Denis Leary goes from New York fireman to Spider-Man cop

Nov. 17, 2010by: Dave Davis

I'm still uncertain just how I feel about a reboot of the SPIDER-MAN movie series, but I can't deny that the cast is oddly intriguing.

So far we've got Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker), Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy), Rhys Ifans (The Lizard, presumably), Martin Sheen (Uncle Ben) and Sally Field (Aunt May).

Now we've got "Rescue Me" chain-smoking firefighter Denis Leary playing pipe-puffing police captain George Stacy, who's not only the dad of Peter's high school love interest but also often encounters Parker's costumed crimefighting identity.

Marc Webb ((500) DAYS OF SUMMER) is directing Sony's 3D relaunch, with shooting to begin next month for a planned July 3, 2012 release.

Extra Tidbit: Amusingly enough, Leary has previously said he's been mistaken for original SPIDER-MAN villain Willem Dafoe.

I get the feeling the studio thinks that if they throw enough big names in there that we'll forget about the previous franchise. What's next? Jack Nicholson for JJ?

Still don't want to see a reboot...

...so Leary isn't changing that.

I wonder if he'll have more screen time than James Cromwell did in Spiderman 3. Despite the good cast, I'm still unsure about the reboot. I mean, they dropped Spiderman 4 and started the reboot the next day it seems. Its like dumping a girl you've had a long term relationship with and dating a new girl the next day, its just a douche move.

Excellent choice. Leary hasn't been used well in a film since Demolition Man.

The casting for this is very quite interesting. So now all we need is what, our J. Jonah Jameson and Betty Brant?

P.S. with this particular casting, I wonder if they'll let Denis Leary say "f*ck".

Well, even if he's given as little to do as James Cromwell was, Leary still knows how to milk a scene for all it's worth, even when he isn't chewing scenery. Glad he's not Jameson, though, cuz I know that's the casting bit that everyone's really wanting to know.

Unfunny, joke-stealing douchebag.

Seriously? This many people like the dumbass from the BIG & TOUGH truck commercials? This guy stole entire sets from Bill Hicks, and has stolen material from Louis CK too. And just like Dane Cook, he's not even funny when he does. He's gotten to where he is by plagiarizing men better than himself. Fuck this pretentious, anoying, stupid asshole. My interest in this project just went down big time.

I thought Leary was great in Suicide Kings, that may be the last decent film role he has had. Curious to see what they do with him here.

Great cast so far, although I still think Emma Stone would have made a better MJ but at the same time the change of love interest might be exactly what this needs to seperate itself from the previous trilogy. But speaking of seperating, I still can't see anyone taking Simmon's place. The man IS J Jonah Jameson.

I see what they're going to do here they're going for the Batman effect of giving a cop character a meatier role then the previous movies failed to do with the same character!

By the way...Leary was in Demolition Man??? I don't remember that at all. His last good movie...for me...was Judgement Day or Night...can't even remember the name!!!

Yep, Leary played Edgar Friendly if I'm not mistaking the characters name. Basically playing himself. Leary's best movie was The Ref. Hands down.

Great casting. Hope to see Leary in a lot more movies once Rescue Me is over (Great show). I may not be "on board" with the reboot, but I sure am hell interested because of the interesting cast.

............

Don't really mind this casting. As long as it's not a super huge role I think Leary will bring something to the table. If he doesn't go overboard. I do have a wacky idea for JJ Jameson. What about Bruce Campbell? Or will they shy away from him because of his relationship to Raimi? Just something I thought I'd throw out there.

honestly i thought Leary would have been better as JJ Jameson. If this is a reboot and all the characters are younger than Leary would be age appropriate and hes always been known as a fast talking yeller.

Good choice for Captain Stacey.

Somebody mentioned it on the strikeback previously and now I really want R. Lee Ermey to be J.J Jameson.

Don't care, this movie's gonna be gay and suck balls.

Nothing against Leary of course.

The cast gets better and better. And Tae K. Great fucking choice man. I've been wondering who could possibly take JK Simmons' place and Steve Martin is a very inspired choice. Kudos.

Personally Id prefer a cast of actors not so established as this.
