Depp for Sinatra?

05.14.2009

Johnny Depp Earlier today, we told you about Martin Scorsese signing with Universal to direct a biopic of 'Ol Blue Eyes himself Frank Sinatra. Now who do you suppose Scorsese wants to portray the iconic singer? None other than Leonardo DiCaprio, of course. Scorsese, after all, has a lifelong man-crush on Leo D. According to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood Daily, however, Universal isn't having it. They're loving them some Johnny Depp, especially after seeing his work in PUBLIC ENEMIES and want Depp to play Sinatra. And as much as Scorsese clearly wants to live in a world where DiCaprio plays every part in every movie, there's no reason for him to reject the Depp who, like DiCpario, is immensely talented and A-list. Hell, he might develop a little man-crush. What, the guy's dreamy!

Damon and Downey

Yep, Damon would work. And Robert Downey Jr. would be just about perfect as Dean Martin.

Clooney would also be great as Dino, and that Brit from The Tudors -- Jon Rhys Meyers (sp?) -- could be spot on as Frank: he's slim, sharp-featured, and can shift from intense to charming to mean in the bat of an eye. If he can do young King Henry VIII, he can do The Chairman of the Board.

Matt Damon

He looks more like Sinatra than either Depp or Di Caprio, and has worked with Scorsese already. He's be much better. But, when I first thought about this bio-pic, Ewan Mc Gregor came to mind, only a-list actor I know with the suave demeanor and singing abilities to pull this off. Damon would be ideal visually though.

Dino

Of the two, Leo would probably be better as Frank (looks more like him, at least). Would still much rather see a film made about Dean Martin, though.

DiCaprio woud be better suited for a younger Sinatra. For an older Frank, they should get Liotta. Would like to see one movie next year without Depp or Bale, this force feeding of thier "talent" is nauseating and really detracts from the qaulity of any picture there in, becuase you know they're there due to market research and a hefty check, not for the material.

You could get George Clooney. You could get Harrison Ford. You could get Morgan Freeman or Cate Blanchett for crying out loud, but I'm sorry, it doesn't matter HOW good an actor you are, if you're not someone as unique as Sinatra that ISN'T Frank Sinatra himself, DON'T EVEN TRY IT. It just won't work. By anybody. Ever. Understand?

Leo? Screw that!

Why do people think Leo is such hot shit? He looks 16 and sounds about 12. He can act, but he is about as manly as Nicole Kidman. Get Depp or a real man to do Frank.

Neither Leo nor Depp look or sound ANYTHING like Sinatra...is it too much to ask to get someone who at least looks a little like Sinatra? Even the slightest resemblance?

Great Actor, but...

There is absolutely no physical resemblance. None.

Might as well have Forrest Whitaker as Sammy Davis. And Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Peter Lawford....

I like it when an actor and director have a great working relationship and work together often, it really shows on screen. But, I think it's also necessary to branch out.

I would love to see Depp as Sinatra. If he gets no Oscar love for PUBLIC ENEMIES he'd be sure to get it for this, the Academy sure does love biopics. Plus, Depp proved with SWEENEY TODD that he can sing. I say go for it.

Yes, Depp would be awesome in this. And yes, as good as DiCaprio is in Scorsese's films it'd be nice to see him go with a different leading man.

In response to tp4ever84, Depp's got a ton of projects in development. Most of them, like Dark Shadows and Shantaram, are without a firm start date, but he's already officially signed on for three films with Disney (Pirates 4, The Lone Ranger and Alice in Wonderland) so I'd expect he'd have to finish those before he takes on anything else.

Depp would be damn good for this role! What else does Depp have on his list to do right now before he would get to this? Could be awhile before we see it made if he gets the role. Anybody know the status on The Rum Diary? Can't wait to see that one!!!!

Jimmy is right. The movie was already bonerrific. Add Mr. Depp and now I'm going to cream not only my jeans, but the jeans of everyone around me.
