Depp makes moolah

10.08.2008

Johnny Depp, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN We all knew Johnny Depp was gonna be paid an obscene amount of cash to reprise his role as swashbuckling fey pirate Jack Sparrow in the recently announced PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4 but exactly how obscene is that cash? According to the Daily Mail, it's just about 56 million dollars obscene. And if it's true, it would mark the highest single lump sum paid to any actor for a role, besting Tom Hanks' 50 or so million to portray Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon in THE DA VINCI CODE. Holy shitballs, that's a lotta cash for one movie. Sure, there is no PIRATES franchise without Depp but goddamn!

Extra Tidbit: "Cinema Blend" recently dropped some scoopage that goth master and Depp BFF Tim Burton might be directing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4.

The first pirates got old after about 5 minutes after I turned it off on my computer. Now they're making a fourth? Johnny Depp is good, though not a favorite of mine, but he ain't 56 MILLION good.

I don't know if Disney killed the "cool" factor of the first film, although the sequels were sub-par, I think it's more likely that you just grew up. The first one came out while I was in high school and every girl I knew was in love with that movie. Even the guys admitted it was good. But then 2 and 3 came out and in our opinions the series got worse and worse.

Flash forward a few years, now I work at a middle school and those kids think the first movie is lame and fakey looking (if you

Flash forward a few years, now I work at a middle school and those kids think the first movie is lame and fakey looking (if you haven't seen it recently the CGI hasn't held up too well) while Pirates 3 is the best thing ever.

It's called a generation gap.

As for the idea of Burton directing, no, the guy is perfect for Alice in Wonderland, but not a good fit for Pirates. As others have said, he'd replace the series established style with his own.

Now Depp can take the money, burn it in front of everybody and say: It's not about the money, it's about sending a message. I WANT TO PLAY JOKER IN THE DARK KNIGHT SEQUEL. I WANT IT!!! :D

I dunno

While I loved the first one, and liked the second and the third was a bit of a stretch... I'm OK with the idea of another Pirates movie. I think they should lose Will and Elizabeth, their story line has pretty much been exhausted. They left room for a 4th at the end of At World's End.

My slight concern would be if that the tidbit is accurate. Pirates has a tone and feel to it, and I think that Burton would likely alter that feel that worked fairly well. His films are typically of more of

I wasn't too excited about a 4th Pirates movie, but if the extra tidbit is true then I'm pumped for it.

That's a whole load of cash, and many times the amount of money that entire films cost to make. But it's good to know Jack Sparrow will be back.

Burton's one of my favorite directors and I don't like hearing him referred to as "goth master." He's actually a really good action director who sees beauty in some of the more unlikely of places. He'd have a good take on this franchise, but Verbinski created such a lush world that he just has to return for some more of it.

Not unheard of...

It sounds like Depp is giving up percentage points for this paycheck, which is a huge difference. Tom Cruise got like 100 mil for War of the Worlds based on percentage. With the amount the Pirates movie banks, Depp could have gone with a 28 million paycheck and probably made out with more and no one would be talking like cheapskates. If Disney feels they aren't going to lose money by giving him this paycheck (they aren't, far from it...) and the audiences continue making these among the highest

If Disney feels they aren't going to lose money by giving him this paycheck (they aren't, far from it...) and the audiences continue making these among the highest grossing movies EVER, then I hardly see what the big deal is. Depp's face is all over merchandise, they have actors at theme parks riffing off his act. A lot of nay sayers talk like they have better business sense than the Walt Disney Company.

Personally, I've only seen the first movie - had little interest in the sequels.

I'll admit being a little bit jealous that I'm not getting paid like that for staggering around and making a funny voice for 2 hours.

This is bad. Of course a Pirates 4 hinges on Depp's return, but 56 million dollars? Casting one person and you already have a 56 million dollar budget? That's disgusting. Not to mention all the other actors and the production costs for making the actual movie. Yes, I'm sure it will make it back pretty quickly, but these salaries to actors is getting way out of hand. No criticism towards Depp though; if the studio is stupid enough, by all means...

I am looking forward to this, but I'm disappointed that Keira has expressed disinterest. Hopefully she'll turn around. Sweet, sweet Keira...

Burton!

If Burton was to direct it, I would go. Otherwise, I am so done with Pirates... and not just Pirate movies. Disney has really killed the coolness factor pirates had when I was a teen.

!!!!!!!

If Burton (my all time favorite director)directs, here's what they should do: write in a character who is either Sparrow's sister or daughter, and cast me in the part =P
Seriously though, it would be the ultimate combination for me, since Depp is my role model, and I've been obsessed with pirates since I was six years old.

Wouldn't it be cool...

If Depp gave 50 of those millions to charity? It's not like he needs it.

Depp + 50 charities at 1 mill. a piece = Win

Burton + Pirates = ?

Now Johnny can buy that second island he always wanted! And if Burton does in fact direct the fourth installment, I'm curious to see what it'll be like, but I fear that it'll be too far a cry away from Verbinski's estblished vision/universe. We'll see...
