Despite Avatar 2 and 3, James Cameron still wants to do Battle Angel

When you make a movie that turns out to be the highest grossing film of all time, you kind of have to make a sequel. Fortunately for James Cameron, the second time he did it, it WASN'T about a ship that can't sink twice, so that option is on the table.

Whether you think AVATAR has the potential to be a viable STAR WARS-ish universe or not, the sequels are coming, and Cameron has previously announced the second and third installment as his next projects. But where does that leave all his other films?

We've heard him attached to a million different movies, but one is further along than all the others. That would be BATTLE ANGEL, and despite his busy schedule, Cameron maintains he still wants to make it down the road. Here's him speaking to Collider:

"I’m obviously going to be pretty busy for the next five years [with Avatar 2 and 3]. And so I had to consider, do I hand this project off to another director? And then I thought, ‘No, I love it too much.’…It’s such a rich world. What I’m going to do is take the spine story and use elements from the first four books. So, the Motorball from books three and four, and parts of the story of one and two will all be in the movie. We’re not that far down the line.

"We have a very good script and we’ve done a lot of production design. We’ve done about a year of production design and we’ve put together an art reel that shows the arc of the film."

Personally, I'd be more pumped to see Cameron's vision for a new film, especially one that sounds as badass as BATTLE ANGEL, but I get he's trying to make a franchise out of AVATAR. You may disagree, but can you really blame him?

Extra Tidbit: As much as I enjoyed it, and for as much cash as it hauled in, I still can't say that AVATAR is our new STAR WARS, not by a mile.

I thought Avatar was great. Granted, not the most original movie, but good enough for me to be excited about sequels.

Not crazy about Avatar. Much rather see Battle Angel.

wait 5-6 years for battle angel. just look at what he churns out when he works on it for years. now dont get me wrong, avatar is a crappy plot, but a technological marvel in film making. hold on to it jim, it will be worth it.

mean nothing, he will never make battle angel or the other 50 projects he talked about. He will make 10 avatars and spend the rest of his time under water.

I am a complete Avatard (love that word) but even I have been anxious to see Cameron do Battle Angel. I even bought the graphic novels two years ago and was floored. It has all the elements of a great James Cameron movie. Also, when referring to Star Wars you should say Original trilogy or something. Anyone can make a better movie than the Prequels, even Uwe Boll if he gave a shit.

As much as I loved Avatar, Battle Angel is THE film Cameron should make. It would be a return to the darker sci-fi he does so well at (even if its PG-13).

AVATAR will never be the new STAR WARS merely bc of the fact that the tie ins, action figures, posters, clothes, book bags...ALL OF THAT stuff...did not sell with AVATAR...STAR WARS is the huge empire it is bc of the TOYS and BOOKS and VIDEO GAME tie ins. This is not gonna happen with AVATAR. STAR WARS is 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10+ tiered marketable juggernaut.

avatar kicks ass

and hell yeah it's the Star Wars of this generation... well, once/if the next couple movies come out and are as entertaining as the original.

And I don't think anyone has said anything since the movies been out but... well ok there's been a ton of people saying it, but its true... Neytiri is one hot piece of ass! You know... I would... I really would... even though shes about 10 feet and I'm about 6... we could make it happy... you sexy [link]

Maybe he'll work on a good script!

I saw "Avatar" opening day on IMAX 3D & it was amazing to look at. The story was so bad it was almost embarrassing. You spend all that money & then forget about what makes good films good. I'm hoping now that he's got so much of the technology figured out now he'll really start working on the story. If he could even have a script as decent as although not great "The Abyss" I'd be happy. I have only seen it once & really have no interest in seeing it again. I'm convinced that if he had

Schwarzenegger should be in 2 & 3

I loved avatar and I know there are haters, but I agree it is no star wars. I just think it's missing the loveable characters star wars has. Schwarzenegger should be the next main villain in Avatars. Be cool to see him in Battle Angel as well.

Who said Avatar was the new Star Wars? Lord of the Rings, Nolan's Batman, heck even Harry Potter is closer to the new Star Wars than Avatar.

So let me guess this straight?? Cameron is a hack and douchebag for stealing plots for Avatar but when it comes to Battle Angel noone at all has a problem with him making a movie based on someone else's shit. You peeps are a bunch of hypocrits.

Antarius, what exactly is your first language? Do you understand what an adaptation is? Avatar wasn't an adaptation of "Dances with Wolves", "Pocahontas" and "The Smurfs". When Cameron does "Battle Angel Alita" that will be an adaptation of "Battle Angel Alita". Kind of the opposite of a cover band that does covers of popular songs; Cameron's Avatar could be seen as a "rip-off" song that blatantly rips off from other songs while trying to be original. The following summer, a movie comes out with the exact same plot. You've received no acknowledgement, no payment, and next time you go to shop a new script around, you're no closer to getting it made because you didn't get credit for the last film you technically had made.

Say that you've written a script. It's incredibly innovative and creative so you decide to shop it around at various studios. They all turn you down.
The following summer, a movie comes out with the exact same plot. You've received no acknowledgement, no payment, and next time you go to shop a new script around, you're no closer to getting it made because you didn't get credit for the last film you technically had made.

Now, imagine you went to that studio, they say they love the script. They pay you for the script but hire a director with some experience. Your name is in the film as writer, you've been paid, and the next time you go to a studio with a script, you can walk in and say "I'm the writer of ..... and this is my new script."

Without any hypocrisy, can you honestly say that the two situations are the same? Avatar is the first scenario. The writers of Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas, Fern Gully etc. did not have their names on the script even though the movie was essentially their creation.

In this situation, the creator of Battle Angel is well aware of the fact that it is his property that is being used and he will be paid in full as well as getting a "Based on the Graphic Novel By" at the beginning of the movie.

If, before I go see Battle Angel, I feel like reading the graphic novel, I can because I know what it is based on. If I wanted to go see what Avatar is based on before I went to see it, I'd be shit out of luck because the movie didn't tell me it was based on something.

Now imagine how many people saw Disturbia not knowing that a great Hitchcock classic has just been spoiled for them because it didn't say "Based on Rear Window" at the beginning of that film. How many people will discover the same thing when they go and see The Roommate this week and discover that Single White Female is spoiled for them now.

One is thievery, while the other is the proper means of adapting a property. Do you see the difference now?
