Kevin Feige talks details on Doctor Strange and potential solo female Marvel films

10.21.2013

Expect to hear a lot more for Kevin Feige in the coming weeks as various venues tease out his interviews, dropping hints, clues, and tidbits of info on upcoming Marvel projects in preparation for the rollout of the next addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, THOR: THE DARK WORLD. In this latest interview snippet from Movies.com, Feige talks a bit about the much-discussed DOCTOR STRANGE film, which still hasn't been given an official release date.

"Doc Strange, as I've been saying for years, is a movie I believe we should make -- we're just figuring out how to make it a great movie. It is in active development right now. Whether that's one of the movies we announce for 2016 or 2017, we have to see. I think it'll be the middle of next year before we announce officially what the post ANT-MAN films will be."

The question was posed if those future announcements are being saved for next years Comic Con with Feige saying:

"Maybe... stuff might happen before that. It's too early to tell."

The other hot topic that Feige can't seem to escape is whether or not there will be a solo female-led Marvel film, to which he responded with the usual tap dance.

"Good question. I don't know what they're doing or what they're planning,' Feige said. "I know we have numerous exciting female heroes, whether none of them are currently slated, some of them are in development -- frankly, you can look at what Jane Foster does in [Thor: The Dark World], look at Pepper Potts literally saving the day and defeating the bad guy in Iron Man 3, and I'd say we already have great female heroes that are showcased and play major roles in our universe now. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as you will see, features Black Widow in her biggest role yet in any of our films. In terms of a solo standalone female hero, I'm not sure when that will be. We make two movies a year, we've planned through 2015 and we have some ideas of what we're doing in 2016 and 2017, so we'll see what happens."

Feige, essentially, is the man that holds all the cards when it comes to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He's The Man in that respect. It can be frustrating to fans when it comes to announcements, etc., but I think it makes sense to play it close to the chest a bit and let the hype develop. I love to hear new stuff as well, but I'm fine with where we're at in terms of what's coming. For his part, Feige recently said that he'll be sheparding the MCU for a good while.

“As long as they want me here and as long as we're having a good time making the movies, I hope to stay and keep making movies. I think it'll be a while, at least through the next phase or so."

The next phase two MCU film, THOR: THE DARK WORLD, opens on November 8, 2013.

Perfect actor is...

Luke Evans for Dr. Strange! I think he would fit the bill nicely. He has never had a defining roll and this character is meant for him. I hope Hollywood sees it my way.

It's cool that they are considering female-led Marvel films. I hope Wasp shows up in Ant-Man.

Much like my view that I always thought the X-Men mutant world should have been set in a different universe...I get the same feeling with Doctor Strange's world. Then there's Blade's world – should that really be in there too? With so many dangers, its a wonder how humans haven’t become extinct. Anywayz, given that Iron Man 3 chose a different path for The Mandarin, makes it odd to now bring Doctor Strange's world in to this. As others said, after what the battle of New York did to

As others said, after what the battle of New York did to Tony...just imagine what his frame of mind might have been after tangling with a comic book Mandarin. Then...and I really thought it for a nano second when it was posted on here about what the teaser at the end of Iron Man 3 was...when Bruce goes...I'm not that kind of Doctor...I really thought he was going to make some reference like, you need to speak to my friend...Stephen. Honestly, talk about the proverbial missed boat or what.

A Doctor Strange film would be awesome to showcase the more supernatural side of the Marvel characters.

Tom Hanks for Baron Mordo

Hah, ever since he spoke out, wanting to be in a superhero flick, that's who I'm thinking he could tackle. Would be interesting.

As usual...

...Feige talks a lot but says nothing, really !
Doc Strange ? They had chances to introduce Magic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Thor (they choose SF) and The Mandarin (they choose... WRONG!), and didn't take it. So I'm curious to see how they MIGHT (if ever) put Magic in the MCU ! But I like to have a Doc Strange, nonetheless !!
A SOLO female superhero movie ? Well... Ask yourself, when was the last FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL SOLO female superhero flick ? And then remember this is a

A SOLO female superhero movie ? Well... Ask yourself, when was the last FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL SOLO female superhero flick ? And then remember this is a BUSINESS... You've got your answer : probably NEVER !
Then again, if you'd told me, a few years ago, that Marvel films would be good AND successful, I would probably have called you nuts ! I'd love to be proved wrong !

I agree that Marvel really missed a huge opportunity not using the more classic magically based Mandarin in IM3. It actually would've made a perfectly logical extension after the Avengers with Tony questioning how much he really knows since Magic isn't scientifically based. Would've made a perfect arc for IM and opened the door further for the more mystical side of the MCU. They missed the boat on that one for sure.

I think if done right, Doctor Strange could be a really cool, comic book film that would be totally different from what we have seen so far. The guy is a sorcerer and deals with magic, so that would definitely be a cool and diverse aspect to see on the big screen.

I just wish we had a short list or at least some rumors of what actors and directors they're looking for at this point. I still think Jude Law and Luke Evans would both be great choices.

I honestly don't need to know now what is coming in 2016-2017. Sure, it'd be cool to know what's coming, but 2014 has its flicks & 2015 is going to be so ridiculously insane with the flicks coming out then that I might actually have a melt down if I worry about movies beyond that. There are tons of good movies slated to come out in the next 2 years that we still don't know a lot about. I say let Feige keep his secrets & let the momentum build until that levee breaks.
