Details on General Hux and how Starkiller Base will rival the Death Star

11.13.2015

Entertainment Weekly keeps bringing THE FORCE AWAKENS news our way this week and now we have some character tidbits regarding Domhnall Gleeson's General Hux, as well as that Death Star-looking base you've seen in the poster (pictured at the bottom). Now, this first bit of information is pretty vanilla, but I'll let you know before we get into some mild spoiler territory.

The First Order represents the remnants, as well as the evolution, of of the Empire. There are several key figures we've glimpsed in images and trailers, including that of General Hux. From the looks of it he seems to be your de facto Empire fodder, but according to the actor, he might have a little more going on considering the likes of who he's working with.

Domhnall Gleeson on the character of General Hux:

There’s an air of superiority, and being better than those people around you. He’s pretty ruthless. A strong disciplinarian would be a mild way of putting it. You don’t get that high up in your life that quickly unless you’re pretty ruthless. You have to put a few people down on the way to get there.

He’s kind of opposite Kylo Ren. They have their own relationship, which is individual and unusual. One of them is strong in different ways than the other. They’re both vying for power.

Sounds a bit tumultuous if you ask me, but that's generally how the Empire/First Order like to do things. Speaking in broader terms, J.J. Abrams talked a little bit about Starkiller Base, it's inevitable comparison to the Death Star and what this means for the First Order. Mild spoilers, at best, are ahead so read with caution!

J.J. Abrams on Starkiller Base:

It is very much — and it’s acknowledged as such in the movie — apparently another Death Star. But what it’s capable of, how it works, and what the threat is, is far greater than what the Death Star could have done. Starkiller Base is another step forward, technologically speaking, in terms of power. Evil’s a little bit like a drug. It takes more and more of it to have the same effect. And I think the First Order is a really deadly drug.

The name, I'm sure, is more than just a nod Luke's original name from STAR WARS. Given the powerful red laser seen in the trailers, I have a feeling the First Order will be putting that Base into action at some point early on in THE FORCE AWAKENS. I'd be very surprised if Starkiller Base just ends up as a placeholder Death Star for this film, so I'm excited to see what it's capable of and how it will be utilized.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS will open in theaters in 5 weeks!

I have to agree with you. With regards to art direction and character design, there isn't much original going on here. It looks mostly like an exercise in nostalgia, with leftover McQuarrie designs. It's unfortunate that others here can't offer rebuttals to your comments without resorting to adolescent insults. Where is Shirey to threaten banning when you need him?

I have a few concerns about the film, but I think criticizing the look and feel is misguided. You can complain about lack if design originality and mcquarrie "rip offs", but jj is operating in a universe that mcquarrie visually defined in the first 3. If the designs depart too much, it doesn't feel like the same universe (see episodes 1-3). So I'd say thank god he's not being too "original" in his designs!! That said, the last thing I'd like to see is another Death Star, so the Starkiller has

It does sound a bit unoriginal, but I guess we'll have to wait and see how it's used, and how it fits into the story.

It (star killer base ) looks so much like the giggling deathstar from the x-wings fan made pixar short. Also smacks of umbra from the old mighty orbots cartoon.

Not to mention Starkiller base (if it does in fact destroy stars, and thereby entire solar systems) is the virtually the same as the Suncrusher ship from the no longer canon Jedi Academy book trilogy.

Why isn't the 7th installment in a beloved franchise more original? Is that a serious question? Could it be because originality is considered sacrilegious to the militant fan base? Could it be because there are literally thousands of Star Wars comic books, novels, video games, fan-fiction, and memes. so any idea he could possibly come up with that isn't totally ridiculous has already been thought of?

I think the real question is why are you looking for originality in Star Wars Part 7? If you want something original, watch something that isn't the latest entry in a franchise that has been obsessed over for the past FORTY YEARS! That is sort of in line with Einstein's definition of insanity right there...

based on the name

I doubt its just a clever nod to Skywalker's name, they mention it being more powerful than the death star, so its likely a device that causes stars to go supernova or collapse into black holes, thus destroying entire star systems.

Funny, looking up "planet killer" will find you a list of hundreds of weapons, in one way or another, do the same thing. You're reaching bub. Many predate TMNT, which by the way, isn't on the list below.

I actually took it as a reference to the Death Star. Like they are basically saying, "Yeah the Death Star was a bad ass weapon, but this is a (Death) Star Killer, this thing eats Death Stars as a mid-afternoon snack. There is really no point in blowing up entire star systems, more often than not, one planet will get the job done and if not, is it really that much trouble to reload?

Are there really that many times where they need to blow up everything? I would think they would want to

Are there really that many times where they need to blow up everything? I would think they would want to develop a weapon that targets organic lifeforms, so they can kill everyone and still keep the resources for the First Order. Or blow up that planet's seat of power and keep all the resources for themselves.

Another deathstar...yawn

Three times in 7 movies... quit repeating the same storyline. That means Episode 9 will feature the new, half built Starkiller Base.

I assume this was started a) during the Imperial period then abandoned as command and control broke down post Jedi. The first order is formed from the remnants and they pick up the pieces of equipment/bases they can salvage etc. while recruiting from friendly systems who prospered under the Empire.

I wonder how the first order could build something so massive and deadly without anyone noticing. That and how could they afford it. They don't have emperor money!

Maybe that's why it took so long to build.

My guess is that it is actually built into a planet. Just from the trailer you can see an icy planet with a giant trench. I guess it could also just be disguised as a planet, which would have the same effect. I could be completely wrong, of course, but that'd certainly be one way to hide it. I also have no idea how money works in the Star Wars galaxy because both the first two death stars would've been virtually impossible to build without letting the entire galaxy in on your secret plan.

Easy answer JJ is a hack and wrote it into the script because why be original right?

JJ Abrams co-wrote the script, but I don't consider Abrams a hack.

Did you know that Lawrence Kasdan wrote and directed Dreamcatcher and that this film was far more recent than his script for Empire Strikes Back? I'm sure you did. That movie was awful.

I'm not sure what point I was trying to make.
