Details on what to expect in the extended cut of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Jun. 25, 2013by: Paul Shirey

For those that have been holding onto their cash to purchase the inevitable extended cut of THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, details have now surfaced on just what extra bang you'll be getting for your buck. Empire spoke with the filmmakers in their latest issue, where they spilled the beans on what additional and/or added scenes will be featured in the extended cut, including more Hobbiton, more goblins, and more Thranduil, amongst other interesting bits. Here's the rundown:

"You are going to get some serious Dwarvish disrespect of the elves at Rivendell," says Jackson.

"You are going to get more of Hobbiton," says producer / co-writer Philippa Boyens. "We always wanted to wend our way through Hobbiton, but in the end Bilbo has to run out of the door."

"You are going to get more Goblin Town, and the Great Goblin singing his song," adds Fran Walsh, Jackson's other half and fellow screenwriter. "It is a great song, but it was just another delay in terms of moving the story along."

"A number one hit from the Goblin King," laughs Jackson. "Barry Humphries is going to rise up the charts."

"We are putting things in the extended cut that are going to play straight into the second film," explains Jackson, "like this character Girion, who is defending [the city of] Dale using black arrows against Smaug. And the black arrows play a part in an ongoing story, for they are the one thing that can pierce the dragon's hide."

"There are also issues with [king of the elves] Thranduil (Lee Pace)," Jackson adds. "We get some of the reason why he and the dwarves had a falling out - to do with these white gems..."

It all sounds good to me, but it does get old buying a new release of these films every few years (I've gone through regular DVD editions of LORD OF THE RINGS, then extended DVD's, and now the blu-ray extended editions. Enjoy the new swimming pool Peter Jackson). I enjoyed THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY much more than I thought I would, so I'm down for an extended cut. What about you? Worth the bones?

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY extended edition is expected to be released about a month prior to the theatrical release of THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG on December 13, 2013.

Double dipping shits me.

Waiting for all 3 movies to come out as extended editions on blu-ray. Only then will I buy the movies. I got stung with the LOTR movies... never again.

I didn't love the Hobbit like I did LOTR, but I've been curious to check out the extended edition. If you like special features, LOTR extended editions had the best and most comprehensive extras I've ever seen. If they continue that with the Hobbit it'll be a worthwhile purcahse for me. I was hoping they would re-edit Howard Shore's score for the extended edition. If you listen to the cd, you can tell a lot of material was replaced in the film.

Extended cut? You mean this already boring & overlong movie was suppossed to even longer? I loved the LOTR trilogy for real but this new Hobbit trilogy seems a bit much.

Fuck, I was so desperate a few weeks ago for a good movie so I just bought the Hobbit and enjoyed the shit out of it and now the extended edition is for sure coming out and I couldn't be more disappointed in myself.

The theatrical version was filled with enough filler as it is, I can only imagine the needless scenes and invented material Jackson's going to add to the extended editions. I own the blu-ray extended editions for the entire original trilogy of LOTR, but I'm not wasting my money on the extended editions for the Hobbit trilogy. Maybe I'll eventually get around to watching the extended edition, but I'm in absolutely no rush. The one thing I am curious about is what "statue" will come with the

The one thing I am curious about is what "statue" will come with the special extended edition for the 1st Hobbit film. FOTR had the Argonath, TTT had Gollum, and ROTK had Minas Tirith.

Can you imagine what the rough cut of Film 1 was before they split it into 3? It had to be pushing 5 hours.

Who are the idiots that are buying ANY versions of these films before 2015's inevitable extended editions box set?

People that think the 3 hours for each film is enough to buy them now....I'm not buying either though.

Even so, there's obviously going to be a strong collection of sorts when the last one is out, extended or not. Anyone buying them now will be missing out on all sorts of stuff later when it comes to movies like these, unless they double, triple, quadruple dip down the line.

By the time these come out they'll all have:

Regular Editions x 3
Regular Editions plus 3D x 3
Regular Editions box set
Extended Editions x 3
Extended Editions plus 3D x 3
Extended Editions box set

And this

And this isn't taking into account any 6 film collections they do alongside the original trilogy or any collector's editions versions that come with a giant Martin Freeman head...or something.

It just seems odd to bother with any of them now knowing there's so much more to come.

Sometimes a boxset is just a repackage of all the previously released editions. There's no telling if a set in 2015 is going to give you anything you can't get separately over the next 3 years. And if they do, it might not be anything worth the price they will probably charge. For example, I was plenty glad to buy all the Marvel phase 1 films individually since the box-set didn't appeal to me.
