Diablo Cody talks Sweet Valley High and love-struck zombies

Perhaps no one has captured the imaginary teenage dialect that’s most definitely not sweeping the nation these days quite like Diablo Cody, and she’s soon bringing “Cheese and fries!” to two new projects, one being familiar subject matter for her, the other, not so much.

Talking to If Magazine, Cody talks about her two upcoming movies, SWEET VALLEY HIGH (yes, of your older-sister’s-book-collection-from-fifteen-years-ago fame) and BREATHERS, a zombie love story.

“I just started writing it,” says Cody (of Sweet Valley High). “I’m very excited about that. It’s classic ‘80s series of books about these twins Elizabeth and Jessica and it’s going to be set in the ‘80s and true to the source material.”

Thank god she’s smart enough to stick to the Sweet Valley cannon. An improper film adaptaion could upset literally dozens of people! Hopefully she’s able to invent some new words for the girls to use that sound like 80s slang, but never actually existed. Tubical! Radulous!

Now, what about those lovelorn zombies?

“We have a script and I am thrilled with it and hope we can go into production with it soon,” says Cody. “It’s a zombie love story. Zombies are so hot now, but I like to think it’s about the personal side of being a zombie and being ostracized.”

Sign #1 you’re making a movie for the right reasons: Because “_____ are so hot right now!” If this ended up being a somewhat smart and well-written jab at the TWILIGHT franchise, I’d be all for it, but that seems like a longshot at this point.
